UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL vo K. or GEMMELL, MINNESOTA.
COMBINATION-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, EMIL VoLK, a citizen of the United States, resident of Geiiimell, county of Beltrami, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification. Y 1
This invention relates to improvements in locks, particularly'of the type adapted to be used connection'withtrunks and like receptacles, the lock [being of the permutative character. p
The principal object of, the invention is to provide. a lock which is comprised of few and simple parts readily applied to containers in which-the upper or cover element is engaged with the main or body element, the lock occupying but small space and operable by manipulating exterior elements without a key or extraneous appliance.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a fragment of the container and indicating the application of the lock thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the center line of the lock and container.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is.a rear plan view of the hingedly movable part of the lock, parts being broken away to disclose the interior.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fixed element of the lock, and
Fig. 6 is a front plan view showing a modified form of lock operating means.
In Fig. 1, which shows the application of the lock, the main or body portion of the container is indicated by the numeral 10, and the upper or cover portion by 12.
Attached to the fixed body portion 10 is a plate 14 secured by the rivets 15, the upper edge of the plate being formed into a hinge 16 with which is engaged a leaf 17, the same being formed with an enlarged circular plate 18 having downwardly turned edges 19 forming in efi'ect a concave casing.
Disposed on the cover element 12 of the container is a rectangular plate 20 held rigidly in position by the rivets or bolts 21, the plate having a rigld upstanding flat pro- Specifieation of Letters latent.

jection' 22 of suchlength as to beentirely covered by the casing 18, when the lock is in a closed position, and being formed with a series ofsteps 23, 24, and 2,5, eachjof which is under-cut forpurposes which will'belater on apparent;
Rigidly attached to lindrical casing 28 having an integral cover 29 through which is formed anelongated rectangular aperture 30 receptive of the prothe plate 18 a cy- I jection'22 when the lock is in an engaged I I position.
Formed on the exterior of the plate 18 is a graduated dial 32, and passing through an opening in the center of theplate is a hollow sleeve 34, formed with a flanged circular. disk35 having a knurledor corrugated edge by which it may be rotated, the'lower end of the sleeve 34 being-rigidly engaged with a tumbler disk 36 containing a single short lateral recess 37, formed radially, the disk being engageable with the outermost step 25- of the projection 22, the position of the disk being indicated by the numerals 38 placed on the outer surface of the rotatable disk 35.
Similarly, a second sleeve 40, is formed with a disk 41 overlying the disk 35 having a corrugated edge and provided on its upper surface with a series of numerals 42, the
lower end of the sleeve 40 being rigidly engaged with the tumbler disk 43 containing a single slot 44 engageable with the step 24 of the projection 22.
Within the inner sleeve 40 is a post or spindle 45, its outer extending end being formed with a disk 46 having a corrugated edge and a plurality of numerals 47 disposed on its surface near its periphery; the lower end of the post 45 is rigidly engaged with a third tumbler disk 47 containing a slot 48 engageable with the lowermost step 23 in the projection 22.
Thus when the several openings 37, 44, and 48 are in alinement and registering with the projection 22, the lock plate 17 may be look together by rotating the outer numcorresponding notches or recesses in. the
.Whavmg a knurled edge, formed with said lower disks may be readily manipulated. i
In; Fig. 6 a similar arrangementof lock-.
ing disks is employed, together with the sleeves and inner stud. In this case 'the" lock being as before described.
Having thus'de'scribed my inventiomwh'at I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combination lock of the character described, the combination with a container having'a'body' portion anda hinged cover, ofa plate secured to said hinged'cover,'a rigidly upstanding fiat projection" formed with saidplate andcon'stituting a ward ele merit, a, casing covering said element entirely when the lock is in its closed position, a plurality of recessed steps formed upon one edge of said element, a hollow sleeve in the center of the plate, a flanged circular disk,
sleeve, a slotted tumbler disk rigidly, engaging the lower end of said sleeve, a second sleev'e,a slotted'tumbler disk rigidly engaging with said second sleeve,a spindle Within said second sleeve, a thirdtumbler disk, slotted, aud'r'igidly" engaging the lower end of said 1 spindlefthe slot s'in said tumbler disks being adaptedto be"'engaged by the respective steps of said ward'ele'ment, and aplate'on'said body to'which said hinged lock plate is securdifor allowing a turning down when the tumblers with their slots 'arein alinementand registerwith said ward element, and said hinged lock plate being further adapted to be turnedup for allowing alocking ofthe container'by the rotation 'ofthe tumbler disks for engagement with the steps of said'ward element.
' In testimony whereofl have aflixed my signature this 16th day of November, 1916'.
