Description
E, w. WOODRUFFV.
improvement in Combined Blac,king-Brushes, Boxes,
and Holders.
Patented Aug. 13,1872. 12
Wizfizeuarazz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND W. WOODRUFF, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,460, dated August 13,1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDMUND W. Woonnunn, of Washington city, in the county of Vashin gton and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a OombinedBlacking-Box, Holder, and Brushes; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being 'had to the accompaning drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my combined blacking-box, holder, and brushes complete. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the same with the top blacking-brush removed, exposing the blacking-box in its place. Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the lid or cover, formingtheblaoking-brush when removed from the case. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the center, showing the fastening device, 800.
My invention consists in the construction of the handle or wood-work of the polishin g-brush and combining it with the handle of the dip or blacking brush in such a manner as to incase a blacking-box and the brush with which the blacking is applied when not in use, and prevent soiling articles comin g in contact with it.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawing.
The large or polishingbrush Ais madein the usual manner, the wood portion B, to which the bristles are attached, being of such form as to admit of a supplementary case, 0, to be attached to it of sufficient capacity to receive, at either end, an ordinary round tin blackingbox, D; the two sides a a of the case 0 projecting up above the plane of the thickness of the blacking-box, the thickness of the cover E, which is fitted in flush, makes a flat finish when the case is closed. On one end of the lid or cover E is made the dip or blackiug brush F of such form and size as to be easily admitted into either of the recesses G in the case when it is not occupied by the blackin gbox; the brush F and handle forming the lid or cover E, being reversible-fittin g in one end as well as the other. The cover may be secured in its place by one or more buttons, I) b, or other suitable devices.
The advantages oi' my combination blacking-box, holder, and brushes are, that they will be kept together for use, and will not soil articles when packed for traveling.
What I claim is The case'O, forming the handle of the polishiug-brush A, in combination with the handle E of the blacking-brush F, constructed, substantially as described, to contain and incase a blacking-box and the brush with which the blacking is applied, as specified.
EDMUND W. YVOODRUFF.
