1 indicates the general frame-work of the machine in which is mounted the carriage raceway supporting the carriage 3 and provided with case shifting mechanism indicated by the member 4e so that the cartriage and its support may be raised or lowered in a manner well understood in the art. The shift mechanism employed is that of the well known Royal typewriter, such as is described in Patent No. 1,227,438. Mounted in the carriage 3 is a platen 5 of any suitable construction and provided with a suitable line space advancing mechanism G in Vthe usual manner. 7 indicates a segment on which are pivotally supported type bars 8 normally occupying a forwardly recumbent position with their free ends resting on a head rest 9 located near the forward end of the machine. 10 indicates the key levers pivotally supported at 11 in a suitable bearing and connected by means of a vertical link 12 to a front link 13 connected to the rear of a type bar by means of a link 14. To link 14 is secured a bar or link 15, the rear end of which is bent to engage a universal bar 16, link 15 being provided with a spring 17, the lrear end of which. is connected with an adjustable rocking frame 13 and the front end of which is secured to a member .19 carried by link 11i. lt will -be understood that all the type bars, when actuated, move to a common printing point or center. Adjacent lto the common printing point of the machine is a type bar guide Z0 consisting of two converging members suitably mounted by means of a bracket 21 on a stationary part of the machine. Mounted to move with the carriage raceway 2, so as to partake of the case shifting movement imparted thereto, is a ribbon Vibrator 22 also located adjacent to the printing point. lnclosing the upper 'part of the machine are dust sheds 25 carrying ribbon spools 26.

lt will also be seen that this margin rail is so located that it is above the series of type bars and slightly in rear of their pivots so that it will not prevent engagement of the type 'with the platen at a common printing center, as shown more particularly in Figs. l, 2 and d, the location of themargin. rail and the articulation oi' the type bars being suoli that when a 'type bar has reached the limit of its upward movement toward the platen, as indicated in Fig. 4, it will be in front of the margin rail with its'type face above` the margin rail and in engagement with the platen at the printing point.
This margin rail has imparted to it, during the normal traverse of the platen in a left hand direction, two successive motions of different cha noter. Any suitable means may be employed to effect this but, in the pres nt instance, the construction is substantially that disclosed in connection with one oi" the margin rails of application tiled March 23, 1918, Ser. hva-224,178. To this end, the margin rail is provided with pivot extensions 31 that project into suitable bushings 32 in a stationary part of the frame-Work in such manner that the margin' and a lengthwise sliding motion. Exten( ing from the lower side ot' rail 27 is a dependent controlling member 33 and attached at one end to said controlling member is a spring 37, the other end ot'- which is anchored on dust shed 25, said spring tending normally to maintain the margin rail in normal position,-that is to say, in its extreme position to the right, lengthwise, and in its llowered position with respect to its rocking motion. This spring therefore serves a double purpose, as indicated above. 38 indicates a line lock blade carried by a laterally extending bar 39 and normally out of the plane of locking sur-y face 40 of key levers 10, as shown in Fig. 5, being urged into this position by a spring 41 anchored at one end 42 to the frame work and having its other end connected to member 43 of bar 39.- 44 indicatesv a stop to limit the downward movement of said line locking blade. Interposed between the controlling member 33 and themember 43 are suitable connections, which in the present instance, take the following form: 45 indicates a verticallyextending rock shaft located below the dust shed and adjacent to the right hand side of the machine, being carried in suitable brackets, as46. Furthermore margin stop 28 is here located at the right hand side of the machine and margin stop 29 is located at the left. lt will be understood that in this form of the invention. margin rail 27 need not be continuous but is n'xade so merely for convenience. In order to give margin stops 28 and a full range of adjustment, margin rail 27 is about twice the length of rail 27, and carries a complete letter space indication on each side of the printing center, as shown, the lowest scale indication being at the right on each side of the printing center.

The right hand traverse of the carriage is limited by engagement of stop member 75 with margin stop 29 as will be understood. Stop member 75 is sliding-ly mounted as shown in Fig. 17 and may be retracted out of the path of margin stop 29.
