Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Burner-Tips, of which the following is a specication, reference being had yto the accompanying drawing, 'formingA a Y part thereof. This invention relates. to a certain new and useful improvement inburner tips. -1
In the use of vapor burners or the like as at present generally constructed the jet-v orifices thereof very frequently become cloggedby particles of foreign matter carried along with the discharging gas or vapor, resulting in interruption of operations and in considerable inconvenience of the user. The principal object of my present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive burner-nipple or tip having a jetorilice and a guard for eiiciently protecting the `jet-orice from becoming .clogged'by foreign matter carried by .the discharging vapor or gas.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention resides in the provision of a burner-nipple or tip having a jet-orifice and a jet-orifice guard preferably in the shape of a more or less elongated tube, the tube being in open discharge communication with the jet-orifice and being provided with a plurality of intake or entrance-ports disposed for the most part at an angle to the trend of movement of the gas k or vapor kand each having an area less than the area of the jet-orifice, the disposition of the several intake-ports and their relative area obviating clogging of the jet-orifice by particles of foreign matter carried by the escaping gas or vapor; and in certain novel features of form, construction, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the said drawing, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, l indicates the discharge-pipe or jet of a gas or vapor burner, which is arranged for communication with a source of gas or vapor fuel supply, not shown. Threaded', as shown, or otherwise seated upon *theV discharge-end of the pipe or jet 1, is the nipple ortip 2, which is substantially a cup-shaped body providedap'proximately centrally in its end wall A3 with a jet-orifice 4. Preferably the nipple or vtip 2 is externally of non-circular formation to facilitate itsY connection with, Ior disconnection from', the jet or pipe 1. y

non-leaking joint is thereby provided between the nipple2 and the tube or guard 5, whereby gas or vapor discharging through jet or pipe 1, as well as also particles of carbon or`other foreign matter carried by such discharging gas .or vapor and lodging against the surrounding'portion of the end wall 3 of the nipple ortip, are prevented from entering'the tubev/ at its said'end 6. At its other or free end, the tube 5 is restricted, as shown, by pinching or otherwise, as at 8, to the extent of providing an intake-slot or entrance-port 9 of such small size or area relatively to the size or area of jet-orifice 4 as to preclude or prevent the admission or entrance into the tube 5 of a gas or vapor-carried particle of foreign matter having a size greater than the size or area of the jet-orifice 4. Adjacent its said other or free end, and at a suitable distance from the end wall 3 of nipple 2, the tube 5 is also provided with a plurality of intakeopenings or entrance-ports 10, each disposed approximately at right angles to tube 5 and hence also approximately at right angles to the trend of movement or travel of the gas that there is little, if any,
or vapor discharging through the burnerjet or pipe 1. rIhe several entrance or intake-ports 10 being so disposed relatively to the tube 5 and the gas-travel in burner-pipe 1, there is little, if any, tendency for gas or vapor-carried foreign-matter, such as particles of carbon and the like, to lodge therein or to pass therethrough into the tube 5. Since, however, each port 10, as well as the port 9, is of lesser area than the jetorifice 4, any foreign matter which may pass or enter through any of said ports into the tube 5 will at once pass outward with or be carried outward by the gas or vapor escaping or discharging through the jet-orice 4. I thus in a very simple manner efficiently obviate clogging of the jet-orifice 4, the entrance into the tube 5 of any particle of gas or vapor-carried foreign matter large enough to obstruct the jet-orice 4 being prevented by the several intake or entranceports 9 and 10. The combined area of the several entrance or intake-ports 9 and 10 is preferably greater than the total area of the jet-orifice 4; consequently, should one or more of said intake or entrance-ports become clogged by gas or vapor-carried foreign matter, the remaining unobstructed ports will permit the flow through tube 5 to the jet-orifice 4 of the required, or at least a sufficient amount of gas or vapor for operating purposes.
The tube 5 is preferably of such length relatively to the flange orside wall of nipple 2 that its several ports 9 and 10 will be located preferably at a suitable distance from the inner face of nipple end-wall 3, so liability of the several ports becoming clogged by carbon or other foreign matter carried along with the gas or vapor and accumulating against the inner face of the nipple end-wall 3 and in the discharge-end of the jet or burner 1. And in this connection, I may state that the jet-orifice 4 may be a drilled hole of one dimension or area. and the several ports 10 may be drilled holes of a lesser dimension or area than that of the jet-orifice 4.

1. As a new article of manufacture, a burner-tip consisting of a cup-shaped bodymember having a jet-orifice in its end wall, and a clog-preventing guard for the jet orifice, the guard comprising an elongated tube of reduced diameter throughout its length relatively to the diameter of the body-member end-wall, the tube being disposed axially of and within the body-member and fixed at one end to the body-member endwall in communication with the jet-orice, the tube having an intake-port located in its side wall adjacent its said opposite end.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a burner-tip consisting of a cup-shaped bodymember having a jet-orifice in its end wall, and a clog-preventing guard for the jetoriice, the guard comprising an elongated tube of reduced diameter throughout its length relatively to the diameter of the body-member end-wall, the tube being disposed aXially of and within the body-member and fixed at oneend to the body-member end-wall in communication with the jet:
orifice, the tube being restrictedly closed at its opposite end and provided with a plurality of intake-ports located in its side wall adjacent its said opposite end.
8. In combination with a burner-pillar, of a cup-shaped tip tting thereupon, the tip having an end-wall provided with a jetorifice, and a guard for the jet-orifice comprising an elongated tube of reduced diameter throu'hout its length relatively to the diameter of the tip end-wall, the tube being disposed axially of and within the pillar and tip Land fixed at one end to the tip end-wall in communication with the jetorifice, the tube having in its wall an intakeport whose axis is disposed at an angle to the trend of gas-movement in the pillar.
