IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING -MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,321, dated August 6, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SMITH, of Strasburg, in the county of Tuscarawas and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machine; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention. consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longi tudinal vertical section of my washing-machine.

A represents a rectangular box of any suitable dimensions supported upon legs B B. In one end of the box A is located a cylinder composed of two circular heads, 0 (3, connected by diamond-shaped slats D D, let into the edges of the heads a suitable distance apart. A central shaft, a, passes through the heads 0 O, and its ends rest in bearings formed or inserted in the sides of the box A. A portion of the circumferences of the heads 0 O is devoid of slats, and on the same are secured forked arms or levers E E, connected at their outer ends by a handle, G. To the levers E E are pivoted other levers H H, which are bent, as shown, and pass down into grooves on the top and back edges of two pieces, I I, which slide upon the bottom of the box A, and are L,which passes under the cylinder in the forward motion of the plunger. By the rocking motion of the cylinder and the reciprocating motion of the plunger the clothes are thoroughly washed between them.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The rocking cylinder, composed of the heads 0 U with diamond-shaped cleats or bars D D, and operated by means of the levers E E andhandle Gr, substantially as herein set forth.

2. The combination of the rocking cylinder 0 D and the plunger, composed of the end pieces I I, diamond-shaped bars J J, and inclined bar L, the whole operated by means of the levers E E and H H and handle G, sub-- stantially' as herein set forth.
