To all whom t may concern Be it known that 1*,.lPERLEY lt. GLASS, a citizen Yof the United States, vresiding at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain improve-ments in Eyeleting-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for inserting fasteners. While it is herein shown as embodied in a machine for inserting eyelets in the uppers of boots and shoes it will lbe understood that many of its featuresI are not limited in their appll cation to this or any other particu-lar form of machine.
lt is importantwfor purposes of speed and precision that the eyelet to be set should be positioned for delivery by the racewa'y accurately in alinement with the eyelet setting device and that when presented for delivery the eyelet should be so held that the setting device may engage and draw it from the raceway without retardation or displacement which would in any Wjay subject the setting device to strain. This is'particularl true in machines embodying an expansib e setting member such, for example, as that shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,271,720, granted Jul 9, 1918, upon the application of H. W. ilenwaiy, for in such a machine if the upsettin dieencounters the eyelet flange instea of passing freely through the eyelet barrel a section of the upsetting die is liable to be broken.
With a view to improving the operation of fastener inserting machines an important feature of the invention consists-in means for positively positioning the endmcst fastener in the race-way preliminarily to its delivery to the setting device. As herein shown in an eyeleting machine this result is secured by providing a spindle which assumes positlve control of the second 4eyelet of the series while said eyelet is in the raceway and during the cycle ofthe machine next prior to the delivery of the first eyelet, the spindle being arranged to enter and hold the second eyelet while the eyelet and raceway are relatively moved to feed the eyelet raceway. Such construction permits the use of a spindle sui'licientlystrong and best shaped for the function of positionin the eyelet without reference tol other limiting considerations and effects such positive treatment of the eyelet as toy insure uniform results. 4

As herein shown the retaining latch is so positioned and shaped that the 'movement of another eyelet in the raceway serves to disengage the latch from the endmost eyelet, in this'case such other eyelet being positively moved by the positioning spindle above discussed.
A difliculty heretofore encountered in eyeleting machines has been that, by reasonof long use and wear or faulty adjustmenhthe movable racevvays have at times developed a side play which has permitted inaccuracy" in locating the eyelet to be delivered to the inserting die. 4 Vith a view to obviating t defect, another feature of the invention consists in a raceway supported upon links haiT` ing a vpositive guidin connection with the machine frameat a point adjacent to the .end of the raceway. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the raceway is provided with a rojecting tongue arranged to slide in a guideway formed in the machine frame beneath the raceway and adjacent to its delivery end. By such` construction the v path of movement of the raceway is accurately-and positively controlled and thel possibility of side play eliminated.
It sometimes happens that y'the barrel of an eyelet is more or lessobstructed 'by a iin of enamel or a chi of eyelet metal which has not been entirey removed in manufacturing theeyelet. This is detrimental to rapid and accurate handling of the eyelet for obvious reasons and in accordance with another feature of the invention it is proposed to clear the eyelet of any such obstruction before it i's presented 'to the setting devices.

These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View in perspective of so much of an eyeleting machine as is necessary to understand the present invention;
Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views in perspective' Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 are views in side elevation illustrating the successive steps in the cycle of the machine;

The machine frame 2 is provided with 'vertical bearings for a plunger 4 carrying the setting devices. The plunger 4 1s reciprocated vertically by a cam track cut in the rear face of the cam disk 54 upon the shaft 52. The frame also supports a stationary work plate 70 above which operate a punch lever 8 0 ,and a feeding lever 34 which will be referred to hereinafter.
The lower setting die 10 is shaped at its upper end to fit the flange of the eyelet to be set and is adjustably mounted in the upper end of the plunger 4, being shouldered to rest upon a hollow bolt 6 threaded into the plunger and provided with a lock nut 8. The setting die l0 is'bored to receive the upsetting die member, the setting surface of which is formed by the lower surface of an overhanging shoulder made up of expansible sections 12. The body of the upsetting die 14 is hollow to receive the stern of thev dieeexpanding member 24 and at its lower end is threaded into a movable angle piece 16. The angle piece 16 is guided for movement in the machine frame and projects in through a slot 5 in the wall of the plunger as shown in Fig. 8. Beneath the overhanging end of the angle piece 16 is disposed a hollow flanged core 18 between which and the bottom of the plunger 4 is interposed a stiff compression spring 2O tending at all times to elevate the angle piece 16 and the upsetting die 12 carried thereby. The stem 26 of the die-expanding member 24 is provided at its lower end with a head 28 against which bears the upper end of a compression and tending to elevate the die-expanding member. It will be understood that the eyelet to be set is delivered to the setting die 10 and the clenching operation is effected by relative movement of the die l() and the upsetting die 12 during which the spring 20 is compressed. The novel features of this form of expanding set and the associated parts have not been claimed herein since they form the subject-matter of a co-pending application of Ralph F. Knight, Serial No. 179,243, filed July 7, 1917.
Eyelets are supplied to the setting die 10 in line with the member 12 by a raceway 72 supported in part by a link 71 and pivots of which one is indicated at 7 3 in Fig. 1. The aXes 0f these pivots are at right angles to a vertical plane extending from front to rear as is customary in machines of this type. The raceway is provided upon its lower side with a downwardy projecting tongue 7 4 which projects into a groove 75 formed in a vportion of the machine frame 2 and so disposed as to guide the raceway accurately Without side play in its path toward and away fromlthesetting die 10. rli`he means for moving the raceway are not herein shown as they form no part of the present invention but may be of any desired construction.
The raceway is provided at a point above or remote from its delivery end with a spring stop 77 which servesto retain in the raceway a line of eyelets terminating short of its delivery end. A retaining member 76 provided with a recess for positioning the eyelet to be delivered is pivotally mounted upon the raceway and normally pressed into eyelet engaging position by a spring piny 78. rThe retaining member76 is also provided with a projection 79 disposed oppositely to lthe end of the yielding stop 77 and so de released and left free to be engaged by the sectional spindle of the upsetting die 12.
The machine frame 2 is provided with a vertical guideway parallel to and at the rear of the plunger 4 in which is mounted a reciprocatory slide 42 carrying at its upper end a spindle 40 so located and shaped as to enter the barrel of that eyelet which is held in the' raceway by the yielding stop 77. The slide 42 and its spindle are operated by a cam 50 formed on the periphery of the cam disk 54 through an arm 44 which engages a slotted stud on the slide 42 at its inner end and is. fast at its outer end to a shaft 46 journaled in a bracket 60 secured to the machine frame. At its frontend the shaft 46 is provided with a cam arm 48 having a roller to run upon the cam surface 50 and a spring which maintains engagement acompa with the cam. The cam 50 is so shaped that the spindle 40 is elevated when the raceway is moved forwardly to delivering position and is maintained in such position until the raceway has been retracted to its rearmost position and the operation performed on the preceding eyelet.
It will be noted thatl the spindle 40 is solid in construction and of such diameter as nearly to fill the barrel of the eyelet, being rounded at its upper end so as to center the eyelet in entering its barrel and suiiiciently strong in construction to punch out'and remove from the barrel any obstruction which may be caused from enamel ora chipof eyelet metal within the eyelet barrel.
rlhe punch lever 80 above referred to is provided with a punch 82 which coperates with a punching die 84 arranged beneath the punch in a slot in the work plate 70. rlChe punching operation is effected by the downward movement of the punch 82 which is effected by swinging the lever 8O by a cam not herein shown. The lever 34 carries a feeding member 32 which includes a yielding pin 30 cupped at its lower end for engagement with the die-expanding mem-- ber 24, as shownin Fig.9. The punching operation takes place at one side of the setting position whereupon the punch 80 is retracted from the work and moved to an inoperative position. The feed lever 34 is subsequently moved so as to carry the feeding pin 30 into alinement with the previously punched hole, then depressed to engage the vvork and finally moved toward the left to bring the punched hole into alinement with the setting devices.v V
rll`he setting devices vand eyelet positioning spindle are shownin their initial position in Fig. 4, the en-dmost eyelet in the raceway 72 having been drawn forward into the recess in the retaining member 76, as shown in Fig. 10, and the spindle 40 occupying its'lower position. When the machine is started the punching and feeding operations 'take place as above outlined and the plunger 4 is lowered while the raceway 72 is advanced to bring the endmost eyelet into line with the sectional spindle of the upsetting die 12. rlhe plunger 4 and the spindle 40 are then elevated as shown in Fig. 5, the upsetting die passing through the endmost eyelet and the spindle 40 passing into. the barrel of the eyelet held by the yielding stop 77. The raceway irs then retracted as shown in Fig.
` (S. the eyelet engaged by the spindle 40 being held stationary and forced against the projection 7 9 of the retaining member 76 thereby swinging the retaining member outwardly and freeing the endmost eyelet. rThe spindle -r40 4is then held at rest while the plunger 4 continues its upward movement to effect the clenching operation, as shown in Fig. 6. rl`he position of the parts at the moment of clenching the eyelet is shown in Fig. 7. L The plunger 4 and the'spindle 40 are then both lowered to their initial positions and the eyelet which has reviously 'been engaged by the spindle 40 .is eft in the raceway engaged and positioned by the retaining member 7 6.
As herein shown through the lining part of the upper only as is customary in setting invisible eyelets and consequently the upward movement of the eyelet is inserted the upsetting die member 12 is terminated by a stop 62 on the bracket 60 when it has passed through the lining part 90 of the upper as shown in Fig. 9. rlthe feeding pin 30 is engaged by the die-expanding. member 24 and forced upwardly out of the work but is then arrested in its movement so that in the continued elevation of the plunger 4 the sectional upsetting die `12 isk forced upon the conical :surface of the member 24 and the die then expanded into upsetting condition. Duringthis operation both the spring 20 and the spring 30 are compressed and as soon as the-feeding lever is elevated the dieeXpanding member is returned to its initial position and the upsetting die permitted to contract so that it may be drawn downwardly through the barrel of the clenched eyelet. i
.Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: l
1. A. machine for settingfasteners, having, in combina-tion,fastener-setting means, a raceway for conducting fasteners thereto, and mechanism arranged to feedthe fasteners one by one to said means, said mechanism being arranged to take complete hold of the second eyelet from the setting means and to maintain such hold continuously until the fastener is taken Linder control by the setting means.
2. A machine for setting eyelets, having, in combination, an eyelet-engaging device, a racevvay for delivering eyelets', to said device, and eyelet-feedin means constructed and arranged to enter t ie barrel of an eyelet in the raceway, other than the leadin eyelet, said means and the raceway being re atively movable, while said means occupies said barrel, to transfer the eyelet to delivering'position relatively 'to the raceway.
3.,A machine forsetting eyelets, having, in combination, a setting device, a raceway k for supplying eyelets thereto, and a spindle movable to enter the barrel of an eyelet 1n the raceway at a point remote from the end y let between said stop and the delivery end of the raceway, and eyelet-feeding means includin a. spindle arranged and operated to enter tie barrel of the eyelet restrained by said stop, said spindle and the raceWay being relatively movable While the spindle is in said barrel, to transfer the eyelet from said stop to said holding means.
5. A machine for setting eyelets, having, in combination, a raceway for eyelets, a setting device including a spindle, a second spindle, and means for moving both spindles to enter separate eyelets in the'raceway and then moving the spindles unequally.
G. A machine forsetting eyelets, having, in combination, a frame having vertical and horizontal guideways formed therein, a movable raceway controlled in its path by one guideway, a spindle controlled in its path by the other guideway, and means for moving the spindle to engage an eyelet in the raceway when the raceway occupies its real-most position and to disengage the eyelet when the raceway is advanced.
'i'. A machine for setting eyelets, having, in combination, a setting device and spindle movable in parallel paths, and an eyelet raceway movable to position an eyelet rst over the spindle and then over the setting device.
S. A machine for setting fasteners, having, in combination, a. movable raceway, a setting device, fastener engaging and positioning members movable successively to engage the same fastener at spaced points on the raceway, and means constructed and arranged to move the raceWay when one of the fastener positioning members is in fastener engaging position thereby to position positively the fastener to be delivered to the setting device. 9. A machine for setting fasteners, havlng, in combination, a `raceway, spaced fastener retaining devices arranged to restrain separate fasteners against advancing in the raceway, and fastener engaging devices' movable to engage and control, in turn, the same fastener as it is restrained -successively by said retaining devices, said raceway and one of said fastener engaging devices being relatively movable to transfer the fastener. from one of said restraining devices to the other.
10. A machine for setting eyelets, having, in combination, a setting device including a sectional setting die, a raceyvayv for supplying eyelets thereto, and a solid spindle fo-r positioning an eyelet in the raceway preliminarily to its presentation by the raceway in position for delivery.
11. A machine for setting eyelets, having,.in combination, a setting device including a sectional setting die, a raceway having a retaining member for positioning an eyelet for delivery in the raceway, and a solid spindle for moving an eyelet to said retaining member prior to its delivery.
12. A machine for setting eyelets, having, in combination, a set-ting device, a raceWay movable toward and from said device, said setting device being movable to engage an eyelet in the raceway, means movable -toward and from the racevvay simultaneously with the setting device to engage another eyelet, and means for maintaining said first mentioned means in engagement with its eyelet while the a-ceway is retracted from the setting device and While the latter is elevated to set the eyelet.
13. A machine for setting fasteners, having, in combination, a raceway for fasteners, means for engaging a fastener in the raceway, and means for effecting a relative movement of the engaging means and the raceway in angularly related directions, said raceway having mea-ns for holding a fastener in delivering position, and said means being constructed and arranged to 'release the fastener and leave it free at the time of its engagement by said removing means.
14. A machine for setting fasteners, having, in combination, a setting device, a raceway for supplying fasteners to said devices, a retaininglatch adjacent to the end of the raceway, and means for movingthe latch into inoperative position constructed and aranged to allow the fastener which to be delivered to remain undisturbed by the operation of said latch moving means.
15. A machine for setting fasteners, having, in combination, a setting device, a raceway for supplying fasteners to said device and having a movable retaining latch for positioning the endmost fastener, said latch being so constructed and arranged that movement of another fastener' in the race- Way disengages the latch from the endmost fastener.
16. A. machine for setting fasteners, having, in combination, a setting device, a raceway for supplying fasteners thereto and having a movable retaining latch for positioning the endmost fastener, said latch being positioned for engagement by a succeeding fastener at a point remote from the endmost fastener to move the latch to release said fastener when it is to be delivered from the raceway.

A. machine for setting fasteners, having, in combination, a setting device, a raceway for supplying fasteners thereto and having a pivoted retaining latch provided with a recess for positioning the endmost fastener and a. projection, and means for a movable raceway for supplying fasteners ing, in combination,

20. A machine for setting eyelets, having, in combination, eyelet setting devices, a raceway for presenting eyelets thereto, and means for cleaning the barrel of each eyelet preliminarily to its presentation to the setting devices.
21. A machine for inserting annular fasteners having, in combination, a setting device, a raceway for supplying annular fasteners thereto, and movable means constructed and arranged to thread a fastener inthe raceWay other than the endmost fastener at a point remote from the end of the raceway, said means and theraceway being thereafter relatively movable to advance the fastener to its ultimate dwelling position in the raceW-ay while said means remains in the fastener.
22. Al machine for setting fasteners hava setting device, a-race- Way for supplying fasteners thereto provided with a yielding stop remote from its delivery end, and a retaining latch between said remote stop and said delivery end, and 'a feeding device constructed and arranged to transfer a fastener held by the yielding stop. from the latter to the retaining latch.
23. A machine for setting fasteners having, in combination, a setting, device, a movableraceway for supplying fasteners to said setting device and'constructed and arranged for movement toward and away therefrom, and fastener engaging means movable to- Ward and away from the raceway to engage a fastener therein, when the raceway occupies its retracted position and to disengage the fastener when the 'raceway is in advanced position. f
24. A machine for setting eyelets having, in combinatioma raceway for the eyelets, means constructed and arranged to thread an eyelet in the raceway and set it in the work, and independent means for positively positioning the eyelet in the raceway preliminarily to its presentation to said first y mentioned means in a position suitable for threading thereby.
25. A machine for setting fasteners, 'having, in combination, a fastener raceway, a setting device, a fastener engaging device, means for effecting a relative movement of 'the raceway and said devices to cause the setting device to remove a fastener from the raceway and to cause said engaging device to advance another fastener in the raceway, and means for maintaining the latter device in control of the latter saidv fastener while the first said fastener is being removed and set by the setting device. v
26. A machine for setting fasteners having, in combination, a raceway. for conducting a series of fasteners, fastener-setting means 4including an element arranged vand operated to take the leading fastener from the raceway, means arranged to hold the leading fastener in a definite position for such taking, mean-s arranged to restrain the second fastener of said series at a position remote from the leading fastener, and means arranged to feed the second fastener from said restraining means to said holding means without relinquishing control of the fastener during the transfer.
27. A machine for setting fasteners having, in combination, fastener-setting means, a racevvay for conducting a series of fasteners to be'set by said means, two fastener-restraining rdevices arranged to engage, respecond restraining device, the latter being'effective to take control of the fastener, with regard to forward and backward movement of the fastener, while such fastener is under the control of said feeding means.
28. A machine for setting eyelets having,
in combination, eyelet-setting means, a raceway for conducting a series of eyelets to b e set by said means, twoeyelet-restraining devices arranged to engage, respectively, the leading eyelet and the second eyelet of the series to maintain them a predetermined distance apart, and a spindle arranged to enter the barrel of the second eyelet to transfer the latter from the first restraining device to the second restraining device in consequence of relative movement of said spindle and the raceway, said second restraining de.- vice being effective to take control of the eyelet, with regard to both forward and backwardy movement, and means arrangedto move the spindle into and out of the eyelet.
