JOHN SAMUEL DONOVAN, 0F FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
SHOEPACK.
To all wLor/i 'it may] coa/ocra Be it known that I, JOHN SAMUEL DonovAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain. and resident of r-xberdeen street, in the city of Fredericton, Province of New Brunswick, Dominionof Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoepacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shoepacks. At the present time shoepacks are made almost exclusively by hand, the vamp or front and the toe being butt-jointed and hand-sewn, while the joint at the back of the counter1 is also butt-jointed and handsewn, giving to the completed article an unsightly appearance, while the expense of manufacture is extremely great, and one of the objects of the present invention is to permit of the front and toe together with the joint at the back of the counter being machine-sewn and so arranged that when the shoepack is finished its appearance is greatly improved.
Other objects are to protect the heel of the wearer from any roughness on the inner wall of the counter to permit of the upper being made of a single piece so dispensing with the use of joints and thereby rendering the shoepack almost absolutely weatherproof, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of the improved construction parrticularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved shoepack.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse section through the joint at the back of the counter,

and the packing so arranged that it will overlap the joint on the outside rendering thel same absolutely water-tight.
The lower portion 10 is secured to the sole and heel 13 and 14 by brads which extend through the insole 15. c A cover strap 16 is arranged around the inner wall of the back of the lower portion and is left open at the ends as shown at 17, the lower edge of the strap being embraced between the insole and outsole, the upper edge being secured by machine sewing to the portion 10 and also to the upper 18.
This upper is made of a single piece of leather secured by machine sewing to the lower portion 10 to which the vamp 19 of substantially U-shape is secured by machine sewing, the rearof the vamp being located between the upper edge of the lower portion l0 and the front of the upper which is further secured to the vamp by rivets 20.
The shoepack is completed by the tongue 21 secured by machine sewing to the vamp 19 and the upper 18 adjacent to the eyelets 22.
From this description it will be seen that I have invented a shoepack provided with a smooth water-tight heel, the several parts being machine sewn so that the shoepack is very economically manufactured, while at the same time the vampis secured to the lower portion by a cover joint which is ma'- chine sewn, giving to the finished article an improved appearance of the shoepack at present in use and also rendering it absolutely water-tight.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specilication and drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a: limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A shoepack comprising a sole, a lower portion operatively attached to the sole and consisting of a single piece of leather with a seam at the counter portion, an upper formed of a single piece of leather secured by machine sewing to the lower portion, a vamp of substantially U -shape secured. to the lower portion and to the front of the upper to ythe upper and to the said lower portion,
by machine sewing, a tongue extending as eind for the purpose specified. 10` across the front of the upper, and t eover In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my strap located adjacentto the inner Wall of hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
* the lower portion and around the beek there- JOHN SAMUEL DONOVAN.
of and having the ends open, the lower edge Witnesses: of said strap lying between the inner and JAMES E. PALMER, outer soles and its upper edge being stitched J. H. RICHARDS.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ive` cents. each, by addressing the Commissioner o! ratents. Washington, D'. C.
