To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAKB JANoZYK, a citizen of Russia, residing at Jackson, county of Jackson, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Carrying-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in means for conveying the sick and wounded and has as its special object the provision of an apparatus made substantially in the form of a chair having means whereby it may be secured upon the back and shoulders of a carrier, while the opposite elements are adapted to comfortably support and convey those who have need for assistance.

A further object is to provide such devices in forms which may be collapsed or folded into a compact space so that when not in use they can be readily stored or transported from place to place.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a chair made in accordance with the invention, and

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the supporting element by which the chair is suspended.

Referring to the drawings, the chair will be seen to be comprised of a pair of vertical standards 10, having attenuated terminals 11, and rigidly connected together in spaced relation by cross bars 12. Secured upon the front of the columns 10, are blocks 14, and attached to their upper ends are hinges 15, by which are engaged the side bars 16, forming the chair seat, these bars being interengaged by transverse bars 18, while at the outer extremity of the side bars is asemicylindrical rail 19, its rounded upper edge being adapted to comfortably receive the lower limbs, the rail being supported by springs 20 so as to be limitedly freely movable.

Engaged at the outer ends of the side bars 16, by other hinges 22, are strips 24 acting as front legs for the chair, the same being engaged together at the extreme lower ends by cross rails 25.

Connecting between the rear columns 10 and front legs 24, upon both sides, are spaced links 26, pivotall 7 engaged upon the columns by screws 27, and having formed at their outer ends hooks 28, engageable within eyes or loops 29, fixed in the sides of the front legs 24, and to further support the structure there are pivotally engaged upon the links 26, by the pivots 30, other braces 31, having hooked ends 32, engageable with pins 33 set in the side of the front legs, the construction being such as to hold the front legs when extended rigidly in position.

Secured at the upper ends of the front legs so as to pass over the curved rail 19, are flexible straps 34, their opposite rear ends being engaged with the columns 10, the straps being of sufiicient strength to support the person sitting upon seat of the apparatus.

In order to carry the chair, other straps 36, are secured to the I'GZLPCOlllIllHS 10, the same being looped at their upper ends 37 and provided with buckles 38, by means of which they can be adjusted.

These loops are engaged by the corresponding looped ends of support elements 40, preferably of metal and resilient in their character and which are rigidly engaged at the extreme upper end of the columns 10.

Fixed in the upper ends of the columns 10, are tubular sleeves 42, containing spirally wound tension springs 43, fixed at their lower ends at the bottom of the sleeves 42 and having engaged at their upper ends hooks 44 which may be connected with eyes 45 fixed in the ends of ferrules 46 rigidly engaged upon the ends of a carrying bar 48, the same having a recess 49, adapted to fit the back of a wearer while the extending portions 50, are adapted to rest upon the shoulders, the arms being passed through the straps at the back of the columns.

From'an inspection of the drawings it will be clearly seen that the seat elements and front supports may be closely folded immediately adjacent to the columns 10, when it is not desired to use the same, there fore occupying but a limited amount of space, and when in use it will be obvious that, due to the springs 43, the person carried is not subjected to shocks or jars occasioned by the footsteps of the carrier to which the apparatus may be s curely at tached.
