DONALD C. SCOTT, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
STREET-CAR-WINDOW CLEANER.
Application led January 22, 1919.
T0 all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD C. Soo'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at S'eattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in StreetCar-Vindow Cleaners, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to window cleaners,-
and is designed, more especially, for use on the front windows of street cars or the like.
The object of my invention is to produce a device of this character which will be inexpensive to construct and apply to a win dow sash, and which will be durable, strong, eiicient and convenient to operate.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts, as will be According to the present invention, I pro vide in front of the window pane a squeegee consisting of a flexible strip 8 of rubber or an equivalent material secured, as by rivets 9, between spaced lips 10 of a holder 11 formed with a loop 12. Inserted in said loop is an arm 13 formed of a rod which is bent at 14 to afford a rectangularly disposed shaft element or stem 15 which is extended through an aperture 16 provided in the sash frame and through a notch 71 provided in an edge of the pane 7 Said stem also passes axially through a chambered cylindrical post 17 having at one end a perforated fiange 18 through which extend screws 19 for rigidly securing the post to the sash frame.
Between the end of the chamber 20 and said frame, the post is bored to provide a journal bearing 21, a second journal bearing being provided intermediate the length of the chamber and preferably by means of a bushing 23. l
The outer end of the shaft element of said rod is provided with screw, threads 211 and is also formed to provide at diametrically Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1919.
Serial No. 272,438.
opposite sides plane faces 25 to fit within a correspondingly shaped hole, not shown,
provided in an end of a handle arm 26. Said handle arm is secured between nuts 27 and 2S engaging the screw threads 24.
29 represents a washer held in juxtaposition with the nut 28 by means of a helical spring 30 surrounding the rod stem 15 and bearing against the aforesaid bushing 22 whereby said rod is urged rearwardly to cause the strip 8 to be pressed against the front of the window pane. Such pressure of the strip against the pane may be regulated by adjustably moving said nuts axially on the rod part 15 to vary the tension of said spring.
In operation, the rod is swung by manipulating the same through the agency of the handle arm 26 to cause the strip 8 of the squeegee to sweep the outer or front surface of the pane, as indicated by broken lines ci in Fig. 1.
Vhat I claim, is
1. A cleaner for street car windows, comprising in combination, a hollow post provided with a flange adapted to seat against and be secured to the rear side of a sash frame, a rod bent to afford rectangularly disposed stem and arm elements, said stem adapted to extend axially through said sash and the post and terminating beyond the latter in a screw-threaded end, a journal bearing provided for said stem interiorly of the post, a handle connected to said stem, nuts engaging the threaded portion ofsaid stem at opposite sides of said handle, asqueegee connected to said rod arm and including a flexible strip, and a helical spring surrounding said stem between said bearing and the adjacent nut to cause the squeegee strip to be pressed against the front surface of the sash pane.
2. The combination with a window sash, of a hollowA post secured to the sash frame inside of the window, a rod bent to provide a stem element extending through the frame and said post, and an arm outside of the window, a squeegee secured to said rod arm, said stem being journaled in said post and extending beyond the end of the latter with a screw-threaded portion, a handle, a spring surrounding said stem, nuts engaging the threaded portion of the stem and serving to secure said handle to the rod and also affording adjustable means to vary the effective tension of said spring whereby the pressure of a squeegee against the sash pane is regulated.
3. A Window cleaner comprising in oombination With a Window7 sash, a hollon7 post provided with a flange adapted to seat against and he secured to the rear side of the sash frame, a rod bent to afford rectangularly disposed stem and arm elements, said stem extending axially through said sash and the post and terminating beyond the latter in a screw threaded end, a journal bearing provided for said stem interiorly of the post, a handle connected to said stein,
nuts engaging the threaded portion of said stem at opposite sides of said handle for securing the same to the stem, and a squeegee connected to said rod arm and including a flexible strip Which is adapted to be actuated by said handle to sweep the front surface of the sash pane.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 16th day of January, 1919.
