Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1212.
Application filed April 29, 1918. Serial 1i o. 231,510.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. SULLrvAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Removable Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specilcation.
My inventionrelates to improvements in removable saw-handles and practical fastening means therefor, for conveniently and securely positioning and locking the handle to the end of a saw-blade and yet permit ready and quick removal of the handle from the saw-blade when it is desired to place the same yin a Htool-box, thereby substantially shortening the saw-proper and enable it to be packed in a tool-box shorterin length than would be required for the saw were the handle not removable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a removable saw handle and fastening 1 means ltherefor which is a distinct and practical improvement in saw artA to overcome certain important practical objections to, and defects in the usual means of afixing handles to saw blades.
l attain these and similar objects by the construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully described in the follow-l ing specification and finally pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a sawblade, `removable-handle and fastening means therefor constructed in accordance with my invention, the handle being shown detached in full lines and partially removed in dotted lines.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of a saw-blade showin the fastening receiving slots formed in one end thereof.
Fig. 3, is a detail taken on line X-X of Fig. 1. l
Fig. 4:, is a longitudinal sectional view of the fastening means carried by the handle.
Fig. 5, is a detail, in section, of one of the female fastening members.
Fig. 6, is a detail in side elevation of the male fastening member.
Fig. 7, is a bottom plan view of the sawhandle, blade and the spring locking means.
Referring to the drawings the reference character 1 designates an ordinary standard.
saw-blade while 2 designates the usual sawtion .3.
The saw-blade 1 is provided at one end wlth a slotted opening 4 having an upper open end communicating with the upper edge of the saw-blade near the upper corner @thereof r1)lie saw-blade 1 is further provided with the slotted opening 6 having an outer open end communicating with the beveled edge 7. rlhe slotted opening 6 is positioned below and toone side of the slotted opening i. The saw-blade 1 is still further provided with a third slotted opening 8 having an outer open end communicating with the beveled edge 7. rllhe slotted opening 6 is provided with the curved upper edge 9 which 1s the arc of a circle using point 10 of slot i, as a center. Ilihe slotted opening 8 is provided With the curved upper edge' l1 which is the arc of a circle using point 10 of slot d,
l as a center.
rFhe saw blade 1 'is still further provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending slotted opening 12 having its outer end communicating with. the beveled edge 7 ofthe saw-blade. 'llhe upper edge of the slotted opening is suitably curved, as at 13, the reason being apparent hereinafter. end of the slotted opening l2 terminates in an upwardly extending slot 1i thereby providing a locking-lip l5- at the lower end of the curved edge 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The slotted opening 12, it will be observed is in turn positioned below the slotted opening 8.
The saw-blade handle 2 is provided with the usual blade receiving slot 16, as shown in Figs. 3 and i.
The saw-blade handle 2 is further provided with three interlocking fasteners, as
shown in Fig. 1, one for each slotted opening The inner A of a shank portion 21 having a diameter l flanged head 23 on the opposite end. The head 23 is provided with a screw-driver le eeiving slot 24e formed in its outer face.
l/Vhen the two fastenei inemloeis are intel? 1 slot i6 and extending cleat thioiigh the handle. ,elften these hollovwstem membeis have been positioned the stem 22 is seifeved into position in the hollow-stem mmnbei ae cleanly sho-wn in 3 and l.
lt will be observed that the intenloclilng7 tastenevs are each positioned that the top Jtastener cani-ied in openingz isj in placing a handle upon ablade, liest inseted into the slotted opening 1l, to act as a pivot on hinge. lifter this operation the handle is forced home, as shown in full lines i'oni the position shown in dotted lines in l7 causing the i'emaining two tastenei's to ent-ev their respective slots 6 and 8. When the handle is being linally forced home oi into its normal position itvill be obsenved that the end 28 of a spring-ketenen on locking catch' 29 strikes the cmived edge i3 and i'inally the lip l5 passes through the slotted opening 30 of the keeper and is engaged by the cross-piece 3l which holds and locks the saw-handle liimly in its assembled position as shown in full lines in le o iremove the handle all the opeiatonv does is to release the spring lteepeiv Enom engagement with the lip l5 ol the saw-blade and pull out and up on the saw handle on in other Words, gives the handle an upward turning movement using the lippen intel'- locking' fastener as a pivot or hinge., Alfter the two lower fasteners have been removed tem the receiving slots 6 and 8, respetively, the handle can be lifted olif so as to -remove the appel fastener :from its veeeiv- `ing: slot 4 f lt will thus be seen that the saw-handle @an be easily and quickly alined to the saw- Ibladel oi removed therefrom and placed :teo
handle leoni the savv-blade vvill loe readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.,
