To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN DIERKs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Students Desks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a students desk to be used on any kind of stand or table, and the main portion is adapted to move sidewise in either direction and forward and backward so that several books may be read 'one after the other placed side by side or one above the other on the desk, and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a desk of this class which is easily moved from side toside; second, to provide a'desk of this class which is easily moved forwardly and backwardly; third, to provide a desk of this class which is provided with two differently inclined surfaces, the one for references and the other for books or both may be used for books as desired; fourth, to provide a desk of this class the book supports of which are adjustable fifth, to provide a desk of this class with a novelly constructed book shelf in connection therewith so as to provide ready access of the books to the user, and sixth, to provide a desk of this class which is economical of construction, durable, easy of operationand will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certainnovel features of construction, combination and 'arrangement'of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my desk complete, shown moun ted on a fragmentary portion of a table which is shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same with all above the shifting supports removed, and Fig. 4 a front elevational view of the book shelf showing books mounted thereon.

The book support 1 is a flat piece provided with a small ledge 1"' along its lower edge for holding the books from sliding off of said lower edge. It is supported by means of the bars 3 which are pivotally mounted at one of their ends on the uprights 8 at 3* and at their other ends on the bars 4 at point 4 these bars 3 and 4 are held in certain positions relatively to each other by means of the adjusting bars 5, the one ends of which are pivotally mounted on the bars 3 at points 8* and their other ends are provided with a plurality of holes adapted to engage with a plurality of holes in the lower ends of the bars 4 so that the bars 4 may be positioned one of their ends atpoint 6 to the uprights 8.

and they are provided with plurality of holesin their other ends adapted to engage with a plurality of holes in the" lower-extended ends of the bars 3 and be held in cer tain relative positions by means of bolts 6 Mounted on the lower extremities of these supports 3 and connecting the two together is 'a'handle bar 7 which is used for moving the movable portion of the desk to the different positions as desired. The uprights 8 are rigidly secured to the hinges 9 and the other members of the hinges 9 are secured to the shifting bars 10. On the other ends of the bars 10 is secured one member of the hinges 11 and the other member of the hinges 11 is secured to the bars 12, the other ends of the bars 12 are secured to the hinges 13, the other members of said hinges being secured to the upright supports 14. Near the back side of the main support 15 is secured said uprights 14. This main support 15 is provided on its lower surface with a plurality of cushions, preferably rubber, for preventing the scratching of the surface of the table ordesk upon which it is mounted. Secured to one of the supports 10 is an angle bar 16, one member of? which extends outwardly on a horizontal plane and mounted on this is an angled extension bar- 1 7 and mounted between the two uprights of the two angle bars: is another angle bar, the one member of Which is adapted to extend, through the upright member of" the angle bar 17 so that the angle bar 18 is adapted to he moved relatively to the angle bar 17 for changing the Width of the space for the booksas desired; I 4
