To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD M. LUDWIG, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing presses equipped with means whereby portions of the type may be changed at each operation of the press, so that forms are capable of being printed with a certain part thereof so changed each time as to give each copy an individualistic character.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved printing press having means for changing portions of the type for the making of each impression; to provide improved magazine mechanism for supplying type to said type changing means; to provide improved operating mechanism for actuating said type changing means and said magazine mechanism; and to provide im proved locking means for securing said type changing means and said magazine and operating mechanism in place during the making of impressions.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printing press of the Golding type, equipped with the improved type changing attachment.

In the construction shown in the drawings, the improved attachments which constitute the subject matter of this invention are shown as applied to a printing press of the Golding type, but it is to be understood that these attachments can be placed upon various types of printing presses, and their use is not limited to any particular type or make of machine.
Printing press.
The printing press illustrated in the drawings comprises the usual press frame 1, on which is mounted a bed plate 2, a reciprocating rocker 3 journaled at 5 and carrying a platen 4L, and the operating mechanism.
The reciprocating mechanism for the rocker 3 is in the nature of a system of compound levers, which includes the followingdescribed elements: A pair of draw bars 6 are located at opposite sides of the frame 1 and j ournaled at their rear ends on the rear impression shaft 7, and at their forward ends, on the front impression shaft 8. The shaft 8 is carried by a pair of links 9, on
15, the upper end of which is pivoted at 16 to a bracket 17 rigid on one of the frames 13, and the lower end of which is pivoted at 18 to the gear 19.
A fly-wheel 20 of the usual form is keyed on the main drive shaft 21, which carries a pinion 22 meshing with the gear 19.
The type-changing mechanism.
The type-changing mechanism comprises a shiftable type-chase, a type-slug storage magazine equipped with type-slug releasing mechanism, operating mechanism for transferring type-slugs one at a time from the magazine to the shiftablc type-chase, operating mechanism for shiftmg the type-chase to bring one type-slug into printing pos1 tion simultaneously with the discharge therefrom of another type-slug from which an impression has been taken, together wlth locking mechanism which is adapted to secure the several parts of the type-changing mechanism in fixed position during the printing operation.
The movable type-chase comprises a disk 23 journaled on the face of the bed plate 2, and having formed on the periphery thereof, at points equidistantly spaced apart, a plurality of type-slug pockets 28, which are adapted to receive type-slugs or type-units from the magazine 80. Shoulders 29 and 30 are formed at the ends of the pockets, so as to grip the type-slugs and securely hold them in the seats 28. The shoulders 29 are rigid on the disk 23, whereas the shoulders 30 are parts of pawls 32, which are shiftable for the purpose of moving the shoulders 30 into and out of gripping engagement with the type-slugs The shifting of the pawls 32 is the result of the combined action of a cam 21 and springs 33. The cam 24: is mounted on the bed plate2 concentrically within the recessed under side of the chase 23, and is maintained rigid on the bed plate by mean of a plurality of pins 27. The periphery of the cam 24 is shaped to provide two substan tially semi-circular spiral cam surfaces 24.1, which actuate the pawls 32 during the relative rotation of the disk 23 and cam 24, to either grip the type-slugs in the pockets 28, or to release said slugs therefrom. The springs 33 bear against the inner ends of the respective pawls 32 and normally urge the shoulders 30 toward their companion shoulders 29, and incidentally hold the inner ends of the pawlis 32 in contact with the periphery of the cam 241. A bolt 25 provided with an enlarged head 26 serves to rotatably secure the disk 23 on the bed plate 2.
The type-slug magazine, from which the type-slugs are fed singly and successively to the shiftable type chase, comprises a. chute 80 mounted on the top of the press frame and inclined rearwardly. The lower end 81 of the chute 80 is constructed to pro vide a delivery platform consisting of a pair of opposed ledges 131-. This delivery platform is located directly above and adjacent to the upper edge of the disk 23, whereby type-slugs may be shifted from said platform to the pockets 28 in the disk 23. The type-slugs are placed in this chute and fed by gravity to a point above the delivery platform and are released one at a time for delivery to said platform, by the type-slug releasing mechanism.
The type-slug releasing mechanism comprises pairs of levers S2 and 83 and 91 and 92, the former pair of which are normally urged into position to support the stack of type-slugs, and the latter pair of which are adapted to temporarily support the stack of type-slugs when the former pair of levers are shifted to release the lowermost typeslug.
The levers 82 and 83-are pivoted intermediate their ends at 8 1 and 85 respectively, and located one on each side of the chute 80. Inwardly disposed shoulders 87 and 88 are formed on the levers 82 and 83 respectively, and extend through apertures 86 formed in the sides of the chute 80. Springs 89 and 90 are mounted one on each side of the chute 80, in position to bear against the upper ends of the levers S2 and 83 respectively, and normally urge the shoulders 87 and 88 into engagement with the lowermost typeslug.
The levers 91 and 92 are pivoted at their lower ends at points 93 and 9 1 respect'vely, one on each side of the chute 80. Inwardly disposed shoulders 95 and 96, similar to the shoulders 87 and 88, are formed on levers 91 and 92 respectively, at points above their ends. Springs 97 and 98 are mounted one on each side of the chute 80, adjacent the upper ends of the levers 91 and 92 respectively, and are located so as to urge the upper ends outwardly, thereby normally shifting the shoulders 95 and 96 out of the path-- way of type-slugs in the chute.
The mechanism by which the levers, just described, are actuated for releasing typeslugs, comprises a pair of levers 99 and 100, pivoted at 101 and 102 respectively, on the under side of the chute 80, and connected by suitable pin and slot connections 107 and 108 to a link 109. The outer ends of the levers are provided with shoulders 103 and 104 respectively, which are arranged to bear against the upper ends of the levers 91 and 92 respectively. Pins 105 and 106 are mounted on the upper ends of the levers 91 and 92 respectively, in position to bear against the upper ends of the levers 82 and 83 respectively, so that the movement of the levers 91 and 92, as effected by the levers 99 and 100, is transmitted to the levers 82 and 83.
The shifting of the levers 99 and 100 is eflected by a lever 111 pivoted at 112 to the under side of the chute 80, and connected near its middle to the upper end of the link 109. The outer or free end of the lever 111 passes through a guideway 114 on the chute 80, and is connected at 115 to a rod 116 slidably mounted in a bearing 117. The rod 116 extends along the side of the chute 80, and the lower end 118 thereof projects out wardly from the bottom of the chute in position to be engaged by the rocker 3 when the rocker is shifted to impression position.
A spring 110 urges the typeslug releasing mechanism, consisting of the above described system of lovers, into the normal position indicated in full outline in Fig. 6.
When the type-slugs are released by their controlling levers and dropped to the lower end of the chute 80, they are properly alined and urged downwardly by a lever 122 pivotally mounted at 123 on the chute 80. One end of the lever 122 is curved downwardly and carries a shoe 124 pivotally mounted at the lower end thereof, which is normally urged to rest upon the type-slugs by a spring 125.
The operating mechanism for rotating the type chase comprises a ring 34 j ournaled on the cam member 24 concentrically therewith and having a pawl 35 pivotally mounted thereon and normally urged by a spring 36 to engage notches 37 formed on the under side of the disk 23. The notches 37 are equidistantly spaced apart, and the pawl 35 is so arranged that as the ring 34 is shifted in one direction, the disk 23 is rotated so as to remove one type-slugfrom printing position and advance another into the printing position, and when the ring is shifted in the opposite direction, the pawl is retracted from one notch and moved to engage the next.
The reciprocation of the ring 34 is effected by means of a member 43 slidably n'iountcd in a vertically disposed guideway 42 (Figs. 14 and 15) formed on the side of the press frame 1 adjacent the edge of the bed plate 2 and connected to the ring 34 by a link 45 attached to a lug 44 on said member.
The upward movement of the member 43 is accomplished by a cable 46 which is con nected at its upper end to a rocker arm 50 pivoted to the frame 1 at 51 and adapted to be swung back and forth by the movement of the ink roller frames 13, acting through the medium of a lever 52, a link 54, and an arm 55.
The lever 52 is pivotally mounted at 53 on the top of the press frame and is caused to be raised and lowered by a forked arm 55 rigidly mounted on the ink roller frames 13 adjacent the point of attachment of the tie bar 14. The arm 55 is so arranged that when the ink roller frames move into the position shown in full outline in Figs. 1 and 12, the forked part of the arm 55 embraces the lever 52 and shifts it into an elevated position as shown in full outline in Figs. 1 and 12, and when the ink roller frames are moved into the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 12, the arm 55 is shifted so as to permit the lever 52 to descend to the position indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 12. By means of the link 54 connecting the lever 52 with the rocker arm 50, the latter is caused to rock back and forth, and thereby through the medium of the cable 46 draw the member 43 to the upper end of the guideway 42 and then release it so that it may be returned to the lower end of the guideway The return of the member 43 to its normal position at the lower end of the guideway 42 is effected by a coacting rocker arm 60 and lever 66, the former of which is connected to the member 43 by a cable 56, and both of which are actuated by the ink roller frames 13. The cable 56 passes over rollers 57 and 57 and has a spring 61, or other suitable yielding means, interposed between the ends thereof.
The rocker arm 60 is pivoted intermediate its ends at 62 on a bracket 63 which is rigidly mounted on the rear side of the press frame. The end 64 of the arm is thereby located so that the tie bar 14 of the ink roller frames will contact therewith when said ink roller frames are moving into the position indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 12 and shift said rocker arm into the position shown in dotted outline in said figure. This puts a tension on the spring 61 so that when the member 43 is released at the upper end of the guideway 42, it is quickly retracted to a position at the lower end of the guideway.
The rocker arm 60 is temporarily held in the above mentioned shifted position, by the lever 66, which is pivoted at its lower end 67 to a bracket 68. A pin or shoulder carried by the rocker arm 60 urges the lever 66 backwardly when said arm is shifted upwardly, and lodges on a ledge or shoulder 69 formed on said lever, whereby said arm and lever become locked in the positions indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 12.
The release of the rocker arm 60 from the lever 66 is accomplished by the action of a cam 72 rigidly mounted 011 the arm 66 in position to contact with the tie bar 14, during the early part of its upward movement. When the tie bar strikes the cam, the lever 66 is forced rear-wardly, thus disengaging the shoulder 69 from the stud 7 0 so as to permit the lever 60 under the action of the spring 71 to assume its normal position. A stop 65 is located on the frame 1 in position to limit the return movement of the arm 60.
The type-slug transfer mechanism for shifting type-slugs from the delivery platform of the chute 80 to the type-chase comprises a deliveryv member 135 slidably mounted on the ledges 134 (Fig. 16) and having th forward end thereof bifurcated (Fig. 15) so as to span the disk 23 when said member is shifted forward to move a slug into a pocket 28 on said disk. The shifting of the delivery member is controlled by a link 136 pivotally connected at its upper end by a pin 137 to the member 135. The other end of the link 136 extends into the guideway 42 and is provided with shoulders 138 positioned so as to contact with and be shifted upwardly by the mem ber 43. A sprin 139 is connected at its upper end to the link 136, and the other end is secured at 140 to the guideway 42. The spring 139 normally urges the link 136 downwardly and retracts the delivery member 135 into a position to permit a type-slug to drop onto the delivery platform in advance of the delivery member The rocking of the lever 122 on its pivot,
'50 that the type-slugs are properly stacked on the delivery platform, is effected by a lever 130 and an arm 126, connected together by a spring 129 and actuated by one of the ink roller frames 13. The arm 126 is pivotally mounted at 127 on the top of the press frame, and is provided with a shoulder 126.1 (Fig. 2) which extends transversely thereto into the path of one of the ink roller frames 13, so that when said ink roller frames are moved up and onto the inking disk, which position is indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 12, the arm 126 is urged backwardly as indicated in dotted outline in said Fig. 12. The lever 130 is pivoted at 131 to a bracket 132, and its forward end is connected to the end 133 of the lever 122. A loop 128 is formed on th end of the bracket 132 and embraces the arm 126 so as to guide it in its reciprocations.
Locking mechanism for securing the type changing mechanism stationary during the printing operation comprises a detent 38 for the type-chase, and a pawl 74 for the oper ating member 43.
The detent 38 is pivotally mounted on the bed plate 2 adjacent to the disk 23 and is normally urged toward the periphery thereof by a spring 39. A shoulder 40 formed on the detent 38 is adapted to enter one of the recesses 41, formed in the periphery of the disk 23 adjacent to each of the type-slug seats 28, when said disk arrives in position to locate a type-slug in printin position, Upon the engagement of the shoulder 40 and a notch or recess 41, the disk is locked against further operation until after an impression has been taken.
The locking pawl 74 is pivotally mounted at 75 on the guideway 42. The upper end 76 is normally urged, by a spring 77, inwardly toward the lug 44 on the member 43,and a shoulder 78 is provided on the upper end 76 of said pawl for engaging the lug 44 of the member 43 when said member is shifted to the upper end of its guideway. Thereupon the member 43 and the parts which it actuates are locked against further operation until said pawl is released.
The release of the locking detent 38 is effected by means of the ring 34, the periphery of which, rearwardly of the lug to which the link 45 is attached, is eccentrically formed with respect to the center on which the ring is mounted to rotate, so as to provide a cam 34.1. Thus, during the return movement of the ring 34, the cam 34.1 engages the edge of the detent 38 (see Fig. 2) and shifts it to disengage the shoulder 40 from a recess 41, whereupon the disk 23 is again free to be rotated.
The release of the pawl 74 is effected by the engagement of a shoulder or stud 79.1 with the platen 4. The stud 79.1 is adjustably supported on the lower end of the locking pawl 74 in position to contact with and be actuated by the platen 4 when it moves into impression position. When the pawl 74 is thus shifted inwardly, the shoulder 78 is released from engagement with the member 43, so thatit may be free to slide downwardly in its guideway. The lower end of the locking member 74, which is pro vided with an inwardly projecting shoulder 79, is, however, shifted so that the shoulder 79 moves into the path of the member 43 and prevents it from returning to its normal position until the said platen has receded from the impression position. When the stud 79.1 is disengaged by the platen, the spring 77 rotates the upper end 76 of the locking member inwardly and the lower end outwardly, so that the member 43 is wholly released.
It will be observed particularly from Fig. 3 that the operating rod 116, for the type slug releasing mechanism, and the stud 79, of the locking pawl 74, are so located that they will not be actuated at times when the rocker arm 3 moves into the impression position and the platen 4 has been shifted into its throw off position (indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 2) in the manner well known in printing presses of this kind. Obviously there is, therefore, no release of the locking mechanism unless an impression is taken.
The type-units used are preferably in the form of slugs 119, east in a linotype machine, and the body of the slugs is cut away as shown at 120 so as to leave ribs 121, the
outer ones of which are spaced slightly inward from the ends of the slug. When the slugs are in the chute 80 shown in Fig. 6, these spaces between the outer ribs 121 and the edge of the slug provide a space into which the inwardly projecting parts of the type-unit releasing levers extend.
The operation of the device herein shown and described can probably be best followed out by beginning with the movements of the various mechanisms as the rocker 3 recedes from the making of an impression.
As the platen 4 is receding from the bed plate, the ink roller frames 13 are moving downward across the inking disk and the type in the stationary type-chase 141 on the bed plate 2.
During the downward movement of the ink roller frames, the tie bar 14 is moved up wardly at the rear of the press and carries the forked member 55 upwardly, thereby raising the arm 52 from the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 12, to the position shown in full outline. This raising of the arm 52 shifts the upper end 49 of the arm 50 rearwardly, whereby the cable 46 draws the member 43 upwardly in its guideway.
The shifting of the member 43 upwardly in its guideway causes the ring 34, which is connected to said member by the lug 44 and link 45, to rotate so as to revolve the disk 23 in a counterclockwise direction (Fig. 2), by reason of the spring-actuated pawl 35 being engaged in one of the recesses 37 in said disk. As the member 43 approaches the up per limit of its movement, it strikes the shoulders 138 on the link 136 and shifts the delivery member 135 to the left (Fig. 14), thereby sliding the lowermost type-unit 119 endwise into one of the type-slug pockets 28 in the periphery of the disk 23. The rotation of the disk 23 moves the type-slug 119, delivered thereto during the previous upward movement of the member 43, into printing position alongside the type in the stationary type-chase 141, and at the same time moves the type-slug, from which the impression has just been taken, into position to be discharged from its pocket. As the disk completes its rotation, the then up per and lower pawls 32 pass over the respective shoulders joining the cam surfaces 24.1 and are thereby shifted so as to retract the shoulders 30. This results in a discharge of the type-slug from the then lower pocket 28,
and in an opening of the upper pocket to sion, and the platen moves upward toward the bed plate to make the impression. Dun ing the early part of this movement of the frames, the arm 55 is removed from engagement with the lever 52, which thereupon de-v scends and restores it and the arm 50 to the positions indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 12. Y
As the frames 13- approach the upper limit of their travel, the arms 60 and 126 are engaged and shifted, the one by the tie bar 14, and the other by the upper end of one of the frames 13.
As the tie bar 14 comes in contact with the end 64 of the arm 60, said arm is swung into the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 12, thus establishing a tension in the spring 61 which is interposed in the cable 56. The movement of the arm 60 causes the shoulder 7 0 to shift the lever 66 rearwardly until said shoulder becomes seated on the ledge 69, whereupon the arm is locked in its elevated position and tension maintained on the spring 61, which upon the release of the member 43 from the locking pawl 74 will restore said member to its position at the lower 1 0 end of the guideway 42.
As the arm 126 is shifted rearwardly, the flexible link 129 and lever 132 are shifted to cause the rocking of the arm 122 and elevate the foot 124 preparatory to receiving 1 5 another slug when the releasing mechanism has been actuated at the taking of the im pression.
As the platen 4 moves into impression position, it contacts with the end 118 of the rod 116, so as to shift said rod and thereby actuate the type-slug releasing mechanism in such a manner as to retract the shoulders 87 and 88 from engagement with the typeslugs in the chute and to shift the shoulders 95 and 96 into the pathway of the slugs. This allows the stack of type-slugs to slide downwardly a distance equal to the width of one type-slug, where they come in con tact with and rest temporarily upon the 0 shoulders 95 and 96.
Simultaneously with the engagement of the platen with the rod 116, the stud 79.1 is engaged and the pawl 74 shifted so as to retract the shoulder/78 from the member 43 and allow said member to settle slightly and rest upon the shoulder 7 9 until the impression has been completed.
' As the platen 4 recedes from taking the impression, the rod 116 and pawl 74 are released. The release of the rod 116 allows the spring 110 to shift the link 109 and the operating levers 99 and 100 to their initial position, thereby allowing the springs 89, 90, 97, and 98 to shift the respective levers 82, 83, and 91, 92, outwardly, so that the stack of slugs again rests upon the shoulders 87 and 88, and said lowermost slug is released from the shoulders 95 and 96 and slides down onto the stack of slugs temporarily resting on the delivery member 135 under the foot 124.
The release of the pawl 74 allows the spring thereon to retract the shoulder 79, whereby the member 43 is released and, under the-action. of the spring 61 and cable 56, is drawn quickly downward in its guideway to the lower end thereof.
As the member 43 is shifted to the lower end of its guideway, the ring 3 is rotated. in
a clockwise direction (Fig. 2), and the cam- 341 thereon contacts with and. cams the detent 38 out of engagement with the recess 41, so that the disk 23 is again free to rotate when the guideway member is shifted upwardly.
The retraction of the member 13 from the upper end of the guideway 1-2 allows the spring 139 to retract the delivery member 135 and permit the slugs to settle down onto the ledges 134:, preparatory to having an other transferred to the disk 23.
As the ink roller frames 13 again begin to descend, the tie bar 14 during a corresponding ascending movement contacts with the end 73 of the cam 7:2 and forces the lever 66 rearwardly, thus releasing the stud 70' of the arm from engagement with the shoulder 69 and allowing the arm 60, under the action of the spring 71, to be restored to its normal position, and creating a slack in the cable 56. Also, during the early part of the descent of the frames 13, the arm 126 moves forwardly and permits the lever 122, under the action of the spring 125, to urge the foot 1245 into contact with the stack of slugs on the delivery platform, so that they are properly alined ready for the transfer of another to the movable type-chase.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described and has been adapted to but one type of printing press, it is to be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted and that the attachment may be placed upon various types and makes of printing presses, without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim 1. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a chase rotatably mounted on said bed plate, a ring rotatablv mounted on said bed plate concentrically with said chase, ratchet means connecting said ring and chase, means for rotating said ring so as to rotate said chase, and a detent mounted on said bed plate and adapted to be controlled by said ring, said chase being provided with a recess therein adapted to receive said detent, said detent being adapted to enter said recess and hold said chase in printing posit-ion when said ring is in one position and to be cammed out of coaction with said chase by said ring when said ring is in another position.
Ina printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, an ink roller frame journaled on said press frame, a guideway on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted in said guideway, connections operated by said ink roller frame for shifting said member, a chase rotatably mounted on said bed plate, a ring journaled on said bed plate concentrically with said chase, a link connecting said ring with said guideway memher, and ratchet means connecting said ring and chase.
3. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a pair of ink roller frames journaled one on each side of said press frame, a guideway mount-- ed on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, connections operated by said ink roller frames for sliding said member upwardly in said guideway, a lock for normally holding said guideway member in such raised position, and a rocker pivoted on said press frame for carrying a platen, said rocker being adapted, when in impression position, to actuate said look so as to release said guidew'ay member.
4. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a pair of ink roller frames j ournaled one on each side of said press frame, a guideway mounted on said press frame adjacent said. bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, connections operated by said ink roller frames for sliding said member upwardly in said guideway, a lock for normally holding said guideway member in said raised position, a rocker carrying an impression member pivoted on said press frame for carrying a platen, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to actuate said lock so as to release said guideway member, means mounted on the rear of said press frame in position to be operated by said ink roller frames,connections between said means and guideway member for shifting said guideway member downward in said guideway, a type-unit chase journaled on said bed plate, and connections between said guideway member and chase for rotating said chase when said member is shifted in one direction in its guideway.
5. In a printing press,-the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a pair of ink roller frames j ournaled one on each side of said press frame, a tie bar connecting said ink roller frames, a guideway mounted on said press frame adjacent said bed plate and disposed at an angle to the horizontal, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, connections operated by said ink roller frames for sliding said member upwardly in said guideway, a lock for normally holding said guideway member in said raised position, a rocker carrying an impression member pivoted on said press frame for carrying a platen, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to actuate said look so as to release said guideway member, means mounted on the rear of said press frame in position to be operated by said ink roller frame tie bar, connections between said means and guideway member for shifting said guideway member downward in said guideway, a type-unit chase j ournaled on said bed plate, and connections between said guideway member and chase for rotating said chase when said member is shifted in one direction in its guideway.
6. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a chase journaled on said bed plate, a guideway on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, mechanism connecting said member and said chase, means for shifting said member in said guideway so as to actuate said chase, a locking member pivoted adjacent said guideway, yielding means for normally urging said locking member into engagement with said guideway member when said guideway member is in such shifted position, and a rocker carrying an impression member j ournaled on said press frame, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to contact with and shift said locking member so as to disengage it from said guideway member.
7. In a printing press, the combination of a press fran'ie'having a bed plate, a chase journaled on said bed plate, a guideway on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, mechanism connecting said member and said chase, means for shifting said member in said guideway so as to actuate said chase, a locking member pivoted intermediate its ends adjacent said guideway, yielding means for normally urging one end of said locking member into engagement with said guideway member when said guideway member is in such shifted position, and a rocker carrying an impression member journaled on said press frame, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to contact with and shift said locking member so as to disengage its one end from said guideway member, the other end of said locking member being adapted to engage said guideway member when thus disengaged and retain it in its shifted position until said rocker recedes from its impression position out of contact with said locking member.
8. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a chase journaled on said bed plate, a guideway on said press frame adjacent saidbed plate, said guideway being inclined to the horizontal, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, mechanism connecting said member and said chase, means for shifting said member to a position adjacent the upper end of said guideway so as to actuate said chase, a locking member pivoted intermediate its ends on said guideway adjacent the upper end thereof, yielding means for normally urging the upper end of said locking member into engagement with said guideway member when said guideway member is shifted to the upper end of its guideway, a stud adjustably mounted on the lower end of said locking member, a rocker carrying an impression member journaled on said press frame, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to contact with said stud and shift the upper end of said locking member so as to disengage said end from said guideway member, and an inwardly projecting part on the lower end of said locking member'adapted to engage said guideway member when released by the upper end of said locking member, said inwardly projecting part being adapted to retain said guideway member until said rocker recedes from its impression position out of contact with said stud.
9. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a chase journaled on said bed plate, a ring journaled on said bed plate adjacent said chase, ratchet mechanism connecting said ring and chase,
a guideway on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, mechanism connecting said member and said ring, means for shifting said member in said guideway so as to actuate said chase, a locking member pivoted adjacent said guideway, yielding means for normally urging said locking member into engagement with said guideway memher when said guideway member is in such shifted position, and a rocker carrying an impression member journaled on said press frame, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to contact with and shift said locking member so as to disengage it from said guideway member.
10. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a chase j ournaled on said bed plate, a ring journaled on said bed plate adjacent said chase, ratchet mechanism connecting said ring and chase, a guideway on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, mechanism connecting said member and said ring, means for shifting said member in said guideway so as to actuate said chase, a locking member pivoted intermediate its ends adjacent said guideway, yielding means for normally urging one end of said locking member into engagement with said guideway member when said guideway member is in such shifted position, and a rocker journaled on said press frame, said rocker carrying an impression member being adapted when in impression position to contact with and shift said locking member so as to disengage its one end from said guideway member, the other end of said locking member being adapted toengage said guideway member when thus disengaged and retain it in its shifted position until said rocker recedes from its impression position out of contact with said locking member.
11. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a chase j ournaled on said bed plate, a ring journaled on said bed plate adjacent said chase, ratchet mechanism connecting said ring and chase, a guideway on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, saidguideway being inclined to the horizontal, a member slidabl'y mounted on said guideway, mechanism connecting said member and said ring, means for shifting said member to a position adjacent the upper end of said guideway so as to actuate said chase, a locking member pivoted intermediate'its ends on said guideway adjacent the upper end thereof, yielding means for normally urging the upper end of said locking member into engagement with said guideway member when said guideway member is shifted to the upper end of its guideway, a stud adjustably mounted on the lower end of said locking member, a
rocker carrying an impression member journaled on said press frame, said rocker being adapted when in impression position to con tact with said stud and shift the upper end of said locking member so as to disengage said end from said guideway member. and an inwardly projecting part on the lower end of said locking member adapted to engage said guideway member when released by the upper end of said locking member, said inwardly projecting part being adapted to retain said guideway member until said rocker recedes from its impression posi tion out of contact with said stud.
12. In a printing press, the combination of a frame, a bed plate having a stationary type-chase supported thereon, an impression member mounted on said bed plate and movable relative to said type-chase, a typeunit magazine. mechanism for releasing type-units one at a time from said magazine, a member shiftably mounted on said frame and connected to said mechanism and adapted to be shifted by said impression member for actuating said releasing mechanism, and means for receiving said type-units as they are discharged from said magazine and moving them into printing position, said receiving and moving means being adapted to discharge said type-units from said printing position.
13'. In a printing press,the combination of a press frame, atype-unit chute mounted on said press frame, type-unit controlling levers pivoted intermediate their ends one on each side of said chute, one end of each of said levers having a shoulder, the sides of said slug chute having apertures therethrough adjacent said shoulders, said apertures being adapted to have said shoulders extend therethrough, yielding means for normally urging said shoulders into the pathway of typeunits in said chute, a second set of type-unit controlling levers each pivoted at one end thereof, one on each side of said chute, shoulders on said second levers adapted to extend through said apertures in spaced relation to said first-mentioned shoulders, yielding means for normally urging said secondmentioned shoulders out of the pathway of type-units in said chute, a pair of operating levers pivoted on said chute, so as to coact with said type-unit controlling levers, a link having connections with each of said operating levers, and means for shifting said link so as to rock said operating levers, thereby causing, the first-mentioned set of unit controlling levers to rock their shoulders out of the pathway of type-units in said chute and the secondanentioned set of unit controlling levers to rock their shoulders into the pathway of type-units in said chute. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a rocker carrying an impression member journaled on said press frame, an inclined type-unit chute mounted on said press frame, the lower end of said chute being adj acent said bed plate, type-unit controlling levers pivoted intermediate their ends, one on each side of said chute, one end of each of said levers having a shoulder, the sides of said slug chute having apertures adjacent said shoulders and adapted to have said shoulders extend therethrough, yielding means for normally urging said shoulders into the pathway of type-units in said chute, a second set of type-unit controlling levers, each pivoted at one end thereof, one on each side of said chute, shoulders on said second-mentioned levers adapted to extend through said apertures in spaced relation below said first-mentioned shoulders, yielding means for normally urging said second-mentioned shoulders out of the pathway of type-units in said chute, a pair of operating levers pivoted on said chute, one end of each of said levers being located and shaped so as to coact with said typeunit controlling levers, a link having connections with. the otherend of each of said operating levers, and connections adapted to be operated by said rocker when in impression position, for shifting said link so as to rock said operating levers, thereby causing the first-mentioned set of unit controlling levers to rock their shoulders out of the pathway of type-units in said chute, and the second-mentioned set of unit controlling levers to rock their shoulders into the pathway of type-units in said chute.
15. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a rocket journaled on said press frame, an inclined type-unit chute mounted on said press frame, the lower end of said chute being adjacent said bed plate, type-unit controllinglevers pivoted intermediate their ends, one on each side of said chute, one end of each of said levers having a shoulder, the sides of said slug chute having apertures adjacent said shoulders and adapted to have said shoulders extend 'therethrough, yielding means for normally urging said shoulders into the pathway of type-units in said chute, a second set of type-unit controlling levers, each pivoted at one end thereof, one on each side of said chute, shoulders on said second-mentioned levers adapted to extend through said apertures in spaced relation below said firstmentioned shoulders, yielding means for normally urging said second-mentioned shoulders out of the pathway of type-units in said chute, a pair of operating levers pivoted on said chute so as to coact with said type-unit controlling levers, a link having connections with the other end of each of said operating levers, and a rod slidably mounted adjacent said chute and connected at one end to said link, said rod having the other end located in the path of said rocker and adapted to be operated by said rocker when in impression position for shifting said link so as to rock said operating levers and thereby cause the first-mentioned set of unit controlling levers to rock their shoulders out of the pathway of type-units in said chute, and the second-mentioned set of unit controlling levers to rock their shoulders into the pathway of type-units in said chute.
16. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a typeunit chute mounted on said press frame, a delivery platform on the lower end of said chute, an ink roller frame journaled on said press frame, an arm journaled on said press frame in position to be actuated by said ink roller frame, a chase journaled on said bed plate in position to'receive type-units from said chute, a member for yieldingly urging the units on said delivery platform toward said chase, and connections between said member and said arm adapted to actuate said type-unit urging member when said ink roller frame actuates said arm.
1.7. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a typeunit chase journaled on said bed plate, a type-unit chute mounted on said press frame, a delivery platform on the lower end of said chute, the lower end of said chute being adjacent said chase, a member mounted on said chute and adapted to normally urge units on said platform toward said chase, an arm journaled on said press frame, connections between said arm and unit urging member, and an ink roller frame journaled on said press frame, said ink roller frame being adapted to contact with and shift said arm so as to actuate said unit urging member.
18. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a typeunit chase journaled on said bed plate, a type-unit chute mounted on said press frame, the discharge end of said chute being adjacent said chase, a guideway mounted on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, a second guideway on the discharge end of said chute, a type-unit feeding member slidably mounted on said chute guideway, a link on said unit feeding member adapted to be actuated by said guideway member, and means for shifting said guideway member so as to actuate said unit feeding member whereby type-units are transferred from said chute to said chase.
19. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a typeunit chase journaled on said bed plate, a type-unit chute mounted on said press frame, the discharge end of said chute being adjacent said chase, a guideway mounted on said press frame adjacent said bed plate, a member slidably mounted on said guideway, a second guideway on the discharge end of said chute, a type-unit feeding member slidably mounted on said chute guideway, a link on said unit feeding member adapted to be actuated by said guideway member, means for shifting said guideway member so as to actuate said unit feeding member whereby type-units are transferred from said chute to said chase, a ring journaled concentrically with said chase, ratchet means between said ring and chase, and a link connecting said ring with said guideway member.
20. In a printing press, the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a typeunit chase journaled on said bed plate, a type-unit chute mounted on said press frame,
' the discharge end of said chute being adjacent said chase, a guideway mounted on said press frame ad acent sald bed plate, a member slidabl y mounted on said guideway,
a second guideway on the discharge end of said chute, a type-unit feeding member slidably mounted on said chute guideway, a link on said unit feeding member adapted to be actuated by said guideWa-y member, means for shifting said guideway member so as to actuate said unit feeding member whereby type-units are transferred from said chute to said chase, a cam rigidly mounted on said bed plate, a ring journaled on said cam concentrically with said chase, a detent on said ring for engaging said chase, a type-unit holding member pivoted on said chase in position to contact With and be operated by said cam, a link connecting said ring with said guideway member for actuating said chase when said guideway member is shifted, said chase being adapted to shift type-units therein to a printing position, and a detent for holding said chase in printing position.
21. In a printing press the combination of a press frame having a bed plate, a typeunit chase comprising a disk journaled on said bed. plate, a cam fixed on said bed plate between said disk and bed frame and concentric with said disk, means for rotating plurality of recesses disposed eq'uidistantly around the periphery thereof, a rigid shoulder formed on said disk at one end of each of said recesses, a pawl pivoted intermediate its end adjacent each of said recesses, a shoulder formed on the outer end of each of said pawls, said pawls being mounted so as to locate the shoulders thereon at the opposite ends of said recesses respectively in opposed relation to said fixed shoulders, yielding means bearing against each of said paWls and normally urging the shoulders thereon toward the respective stationary shoulders and the inner ends of said pawls against said cam, said cam being shaped so as to insure said pawls being urged to shift their shoulders toward the respective stationary shoulders When said disk is in one position and to cam said pawls so as to shift the shoulders away from their respective stationary shoulders When said disk is in another position;
