T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES I. QUAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vacuum Cleanin -Brushes, of which the following is a speci cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.

This invention relates to vacuum cleaning tools and more particularly to tools for cleaning fabrics such as rugs and carpets, as well as bare floors and walls.

The main objects of the invention are to produce a tool which will effectively and readily separate, detach or loosen and re-V move threads, lint and dirt from the pile or nap of rugs, carpets or other fabrics and from floors, walls or other surfaces to which they adhere more or less tenaciously; to concentrate or maintain at or adjacent to the free ends of the bristles an air draft or current of suiiicient Volume and strength to pick up and carry ofi' the threads, lint and dirt as they are separated, detached or loosened from the fabric or surface to which they adhere; and generally to improve the construction and operation of tools of this class. i y

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a vacuum cleaning brush embodyin the invention, a portion of the brush being broken away to show its internal construction; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22i of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In the drawing, 1 designates a back or body member having an elongated longitudinal slot 2, formed therein, which is covered by a plate 3, having a tubular shank 4l in communication with the slot and forming a suction connection and means for the attachment in a well known manner of a tubular handle and hose (not shown) for operating the brush.

tance above the free ends of the bristles. T he back or body is supported a definite distance above the surface over which the brush is moved, by rollers 7, journaled in frames 8, which are secured to the cover by threaded stems 9 and thumb-nuts 10. Washers 11 are interposed between the cover plate 3 and the frame 8, so that the brush may be vertically adjusted with relation to the surface to be cleaned by removing or inserting more or less washers, or by using washers of different thicknesses.

The roller frames 8 extend up into the slot 2 and bear against the sides thereof, to hold the rollers I in aXial alinement with each other and their axes in a vertical plane intersecting the slot lengthwise and centrally.

The rollers 7, supporting,r the brush independently of the bristles, facilitate its movement over the fabric or surface to be cleaned, prevent crushing, breaking or undue wear of the bristles, maintain effective engagement or contact of the bristles with the fabric or surface over which the brush is moved, and permit the passage of a suflicient draft or current of air under the deflect-or 6 to effectively pick up and carry off threads, lint and dirt as they are separated, detached or loosened from said fabric or surface by the bristles 5.

Various modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.

I claim:

1. A vacuum cleaning brush comprising a body having a longitudinal slot in the lower side thereof and provided around the slot with bristles, an air deflector extending downwardly from the body around the slot inside the bristles and terminating above the lower ends of the bristles` and rollers ar-v ranged centrally within and lengthwise of the deflector and adapted to support the bristles and deflector in proper working relation to the surface to be cleaned.
