To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WESLEY B. STAT N, a British citizen, residing at Gray, Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to puzzle pictures and has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device which may be employed for the entertainment and amusement of young children, and which may incidentally be utilized as an advertising medium. The invention seeks to provide a device which will not be bulky and which may be readily handled by very small children so as to hold their attention and prove instructive to them. A further object of the invention is to provide a simple device by which a plurality of pictures may be formed in the use of a single toy.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the puzzle picture showing the holder opened and one picture formed;

Fig.2 is an enlarged section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 with the cover or holder folded;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device fully opened or spread out;

Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;

Fig 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.

In carrying out my invention, I preferably provide a case or cover consisting of two leaves 1 and 2 which may be a single integral blank of stout paper, leather or any other flexible material so that it may be readily folded, as indicated at 3. Upon the inner face of one of the leaves, I secure by any suitable adhesive a cruciform sheet which may be of muslin or other textile fabric or paper or of any other light, cheap and flexible material. The central portion or body 30 of this cruciform blank will be secured to the inner face of one leaf of the cover throughout its extent and the edges or wings of said blank will be longitudinally divided, as indicated at 4. Upon the outer face, or that face of each wing which will be opposed to the inner face of the cover when the device is fully spread, I provide a plurality of pictures or picture sections 5 and each picture section will be equal in area to one-half of the divided wing upon which it appears. Upon the outer half of the opposite face of. each wing, I provide a picture section 6. I have illustrated the picture sections as consisting .of squares of thin card board or paper secured to the flexible wings by adhesive, but it will be understood that the picture sections may be printed or otherwise produced directly upon the fabric of the wings. It will also be understood that the picture sections are so arranged that each section represents one-fourth of a particular picture and as there are six picture sections upon each wing of the cruciform sheet in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, six complete pictures may be made with the toy shown in the drawings.

The pictures are to be formed by folding the several wingsor portions of the wings over onto the rectangular base of the cruciform body so that the four sections of the desired picture will be brought together. To add to the interest taken by the child in the manipulation of the several wings, the picture sections are not arranged in any regular series, except in so far as may be necessary to permit folding of the several wings or tongues so as to bring the respective quarters of any picture into the proper relation. In Fig. 1 is shown a picture of three geometrical figures, the sections of which have been brought together in proper relation. By referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that one section of this picture appears upon the inner face of the upper right hand branch of the upper wing of the flexible body or picture carrier, while the diagonally opposite section of the picture is provided upon the inner face of the lower branch of the left hand wing of the picture covering body, and the other sections of the picture are upon the outer faces of the remaining tongues. The child using the puzzle is consequently required to exercise some little ingenuity in folding the tongues so as to produce the sought for picture. When the device is not in use, the several wings may be folded into superposed relation and the cover closed, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the pictures will be protected against damage and the device may be put away in a small lace. All the pictures are formed by folding the several wings into superposed relation upon the central body but it is possible to so disposethe portions of the several pictures that the Wings Will not always be folded in the same manner or in the same sequence. Those portions of the flexible picture carrier which are not utilized for picture sections may have 'adver tising printed thereon or the entire picture carrier maybe covered with advertisements, and the principles employed in producing pictures utilized to bring sections together to make :a connected advertisement.

Having thus described my invention, What isclaimed as new is:

1.;A puzzle consisting of a cruciform body of flexible material having its Wings divided longitudinally and having sections of pictures displayed upon the branches of its Wings.
