Be it known that I, AnoLF-J. T. WRIEDT, a subject ofthe Premier of-Canada,

. residing at- Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and; State of Virginia, have in-. vented new and useful Improvements 'in' Splicing and Seizing Clamps, of which the following is a specification.

This inventlon 'pertalns to splicing and seizing clamps, and particularly to clamps adapted for use to holda wire rope or steel A further object resides in so constructing 1 the clampstructure that the clamping portions thereof hold-the rope or cable firmly pressed in at the point of the heart or thimn ble so that the throat of the spliced or seized portion lies snugly against the point.

A stillfurther object is to arrange, in

conjunction with the main portions 'of the clamp, a block adapted-for use when workmg a cable around a thimble, and which permits the clamp to hold with the same security as when applled in conjunction with a heart. I .Yet another object, lies in constructing the parts of the clamp to'be adjustable that a single clafnp'can be used upon two or more seizes oflhearts or .thimbles, and

While clamps have been devised to be used upon a rope or cablewhen splicing or seizing the same, these for the most part have not proven entirelysatisfactory in use due to the fact that they do not allow the greatest freedom in working upon the rope or cable around a heart or. thimble while the same is being spliced or seizedin. However, this practice is wasteful as the stoppers ,orlashings are a total loss, and is unsatlsfactory 1n the finished result due to the fact that the line used for stoppers or lashing stretches out during the splicing or. seizing and leaves the heart or thimble loose within the turned in' bight.

In this fitting in conjunction with a heart, the wire rope is formed in-a bight' -around'the heart and a riggers screw is applied to draw in the rope at the point of the heart, following which side members 1 and 2 are placed on opposite sides of the heart with the openings of the bearing ears thereof in line with one of the openings through the heart and with extensions 4' and 5 substantially in line with the point of the heart. Pin12 holds the clamp structure against slipping upon the work, and as the threaded. extensions upon which blocks 7 and 8 are fitted line up .with the point of the heart, these clamp blocks will draw in the rope and will make it possible, to secure a tight splicing or a proper throat seizing at the point of the heart.

Where employed in connection with a thimble, the use of the clamp is substantially the same as hereinbefore set forth, filler block 14 however being fitted within the throat of the thimble-before the clamp is applied, in which relation opening 15' receives pin 12 and the filler block acts to hold the clamp against displacement. This same structure may be used where an eye is to be spliced or seized in.

The clamp is adaptable for use in either of the employments as illustrated and denuts as shown at 10 and 11 same of wire rope, and upon different sizes of hearts and thi'mbles, also upon bare or served rope. Adjustment within the limits of the threaded lengths of extensions 4 and 5 may be made to accommodate difi'erences in sizes, and where extremities of size are to be ac commodated large and small clamps can be provided.

While in the foregoing, I have described specific embodiments as to structure and use,

and have mentioned only certain possible modifications, it will be appreciated that my purpose is to provide an adjustable clamp which can be used in splicing and seizing the same is turned in and is to be held around a. heart or thimble, in view of which i it is to be understood that in practice I do not limit'myself to such specific details as, herein set forth, but may resort to any prac- 'scribed for small and up to the largest size 'so shrouds andother rigging or rope, Where said part to hold said clamping means 1 against displacement.-
