To all 'whom t may Gomera.' Y
zen ofthe United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to stools, and has special reference to what uare known as folding stools.v
The object of invention is toprovide a cheap, simple and eliicient stool, which can be operated easily and quickly for use or in folding, will be steady, strong'and durable when inposition fornse, and will occupy a small amount of space whenfin its folded position.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved stool, I will describe the same more fully referring to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stool;
Fig. 2 is a likeview taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a like view to that shown in Fig. 2, showing the stool in its folded position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, showing the upper portion of the stool with parts in section;
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting the single leg to the double legs; and
Fig. 6 is a view on the line 6-6 of Fig 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the gures of the draw- Elies illustrated in the drawing my improved stool is shown at A, and is provided with the seat 1, to which are connected the two parallel legs 2 and the single leg 3. The two parallel legs 2 are also connected together in the usual manner, such as by the supporting braces 4 and 4 between the same, and the upper portions of such legs are hinged or pivotally connected at 2 to one side of the center of the seat 1 by means of the pins 5 p n Q journaled within metal hangers 6 extending Be itV known that` I, DAVID WEINER, a c1t1- down from saidseat and mounted therein; The single leg 3 is pivotally mounted at 3 on a shaft vor bar 7 supported within and between the legs 2, and is held in spaced relation therewith and centrally by means of spacing sleeves 8 positioned around said shaft and engaging with and between said legs 2 and 3. Washers 8 are interposed between saidsleeves 8 and said legs 2 and 3 and between the headed ends on said bar and said legs 2. The upper end of the single leg 3 1s also pivotally connected at 9 to the seat 1 by means of a pin 9 extending out from either side of said leg and adapted to slide in parallel longitudinal slots 10, Which are formed in opposed faces of guide members 11 secured to the bottom of said seat. The slots 10 are provided with stops 12 at one end of the same, to limit the movement of the leg 3 in the open position of the stool A.
The operation of my improved stool A is as follows. In order to open the stool A for use, the leg 3 being pivoted to the legs 2 at 3 is pulled out and tilted on such pivot, so that its pivot pins 9 slide outwardly along the slots 10 in the guides 11, until such pins reach the stops 12 at the end of said slots, which will thereby raise the seat 1 to a horizontal position for use, and by reason of the legs 2 being pivoted at 2 to the seat l, such seat will be permitted to assume such position and be thereby supported by said legs. When it is desired to fold up the stool A, the leg 3 is tilted and pushed back, so that its pivot pins 9 travel in a reverse or inwardly direction along the slots 10, and upon said leg assuming a position substantially at right angles to the seat l, it will engage or come in contact with the upper and lower braces 4 and 4 secured on each side of the legs 2. This will permit such leg 3 to be brought to a position within and parallel with the legs 2, and the seat 1 can then be brought down adjacent to such legs by being tilted on the pivots 2 of the legs 2. When in this position, the leg 3 will also be in the space 13 between the guide members and the parts will thus be placed-in a flat folded position, with the upper brace 4 on the legs 2 acting to fit over such leg 3 and said members, and thus assisting to hold the leg 3 in such position'.
It will thus be seen that my improved stool can be folded up into a compact form for handling, shipping or storing and when in use will take up very little room by reason of on crowded street cars, will not interfere with the movements of the passengers to and from such cars, and when not in use can be folded up and easily carried on the car.
Itivill be evidentthat my Vimproved construction can'be adopted for use in connection with tables, stands, Vchairs and other similar devices, and various .modifications and changes in the design, operation and ap` plication of the device may be resorted to, Without departingfrom the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
`What I claim as my invention and desire` to secure by Letters Patent is A folding stool, comprising a seat member,
y a pair of spaced lugs on the under side of the seata pair of spaced legs having their upper ends slotted to' receive said lugs, and pins passing through said legs and said lugs to forma pivotal connection, a bar extending between said legs, a third leg rockably mountled on said bar and spaced from the ends Gopies of this' patentlmay beobtained for thereof, a pair of guide members on the bottom of said seat extending at right angles to `the hinged.V axis'- of said Apair of legs and adapted to receive the upper end of the third leg between the same, to thereby support said third leg laterally, said guide members having longitudinal slots in their opposed faces,
a guide pin carriedby said third leg and retained in said slots, stops at the end of said slots to limit the movement of said third leg in the open position of said stool, a brace secured tothe face of one side ofsaid'pair of legs above said bar,l and other braces secured DAVID WEINER;
