Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 15, T91R90 Application filed September 14, 1917. Serial No. 191,355.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Moses F. CARR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, (whose post-ofiice address is care of Carr Fastener Company, Cambridge, Massachusetts,) have invented an Improvement in Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in fasteners, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to improvements in snap fasteners in which separation of two engaging elements can be eflected by tipping movement of one of said elements in one I direction only.
Among the objects of my invention are to provide a snap fastener of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, the interengaging elements of which are separable by tipping movement one relative to the other in one direction only.

Figs. 5 and 6 show the preferred form of spring j'aws for use in connection with my invention.
Referring to the'drawings, the preferred form of fastener selected for illustrative purposes comprises the stud 7 having a slightly enlarged head or terminal portion 8, thereby to provide a neck 9 for engagement by the jaw or jaws of a socket member hereinafter more fully described. The stud 7 is herein shown as attached to a support 10 by a screw 11. The socket is preferably, as shown, formed of two portions comprising a head 12 and a stud-surrounding portion 13 adapted to engage between them the fabric 14. The stud-surround element 13 is preferably formed to inc ose a ring-like spring 15, The spring 15 may be held in the stud-surrounding element 13 by a flange 16,

The shoulder on thestud should be of such proportions relative to the radius of the rounded portion of the ring that the rounded portion of the ring may ride over the shoulder on the stud to permit separation of stud and socket when relative tippin movement in the proper direction is eifecte When the side of the, socket on which the rounded portion of the ring 15 is located is lifted in such a way as totip the socket relative to the stud 7, the rounded shoulder of 1 the stud bears against the shouldered por-.
tion of the ring, thereby crowding the rounded portion of the ring out of the way of the head of the stud and permitting separation of the socket from thestud. When,
on the other hand, it is attempted to lift theopposite portion of the socket, the squared shoulder 'on the spring bears against the shoulder on the stud and prevents separation of the socket from the stud.
The jaw means preferably presents a rounded shoulder to the stud when the stud is being entered in the socket, so that the stud may be readily entered in the socket by rectilinear movement, thereby rendering unnecessary any tipping movement during the fastening operation.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that changes involving omission, alteration, substitution and reversal of parts, and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in thefollowing claims.
Claims:
1, A snap fastener comprising, in com-. bination, a stud, a socket, and a resilient jaw element for engagement withsaid stud.
and said socket, said resilient jaw element presenting a rounded surface to a portlon of said stud and an angular portion to another portion of said stud.
2. Alsnap fastener comprising, in combination, a stud, a socket, a resilient jaw element carried by said socket, said jaw element presenting a portion of one cross-section or engagement with one portion of said stud and of a different cross-section for engage-- ment with another portion of said stud.
3. A snap fastener comprising, in combination, a substantially symmetrical stud, a socket, a resilient jawelement carried by said socket for engagement with said stud, said jaw element being held against substantial displacement relative to said socket and presenting stud-engaging surfaces of different cross-section to opposite portions of said stud.
4. A snap fastener comprising, in combination, a substantially symmetrical stud, a
socket substantially annuIar in cross-section, a substantially annular resilient jaw element carried by said socket and means preventing rotation of said resilient jaw element relative to said socket, said jaw element presenting a rounded shoulder to said stud on one side thereof and a squared shoulder on the opposite side thereof.
5. Av snap fastener comprising, in combination, a stud substantially annular in cross-section, a socket substantially annular in cross-section, said stud providing an abrupt shoulder, an annular resilient jaw element carried by said socket, one side of said jaw element presenting a rounded edge to the shoulder on said stud, another side of said jaw presenting a squared surface to the shoulder on said stud and means opposing rotation of said jaw element in said socket.

A snap fastener comprising, in combination, a stud 7 providing a head 8, and a socket carrying a resilient jaw having at one side thereof a rounded portion 17 for engagement with said stud 7 at one side thereof and a relatively sharp surface or corner 18 for engagement with an opposed portion of said stud 7.
A snap fastener comprising, in combination, a stud, a socket therefor, said socket carrying a ring-like jaw 15 having spaced ends and presenting dissimilar engaging surfaces to said stud.
8. A snap fastener comprising, in combination, the stud 7, the socket casing 13,.
the flange 16 thereon, the spring 15 wlthin saidcasmg 13 and retained by said flange 16, said spring 15 being unsymmetrical 1n cross-section, and means opposing rotation of said spring 15 relative to said casing 13.
9.-A snap fastener comprising, in combination, a stud substantially annular in cross-section, a socket containing a spring substantially annular in plan, and means permitting separation of said stud and socket on tipping movement in one direction while preventing separation of said stud and socket by tipping movement in another direction.
10. A snap fastener comprising, in combination, a stud substantially annular in cross-section, a socket containing a spring substantially annular in plan, and means permitting separation of said stud and socket on tipping movement in one direction while preventing separation of said stud and socket by tipping movement in all other directions.
