To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. PLANT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the'county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines,
of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to printing machines. g
- An 'object of this invention is to provide a construction by which the dials which indicate the positions of the printing me'm bers, are arranged in juxtaposition in order that by a single glance at the dials one may ascertain the lines at the printing point. It is desirable that the set of wheels 8 and 10 shall move togetherand the set of wheels terior of the case moving therewith and shall be operable from the exterior of the casing. In this embodiment of the invention, this result is secured by a shaft 12 journaled at l3 in one side of the case-3 to project at one end through the case and having its opposite end journaled within a socket 1i formed in a shaft 15 which is axially alined with the shaft 12 and turns in a sleeve 16 which is journaled at 17 in that wall of the casing 3 opposite the wall carrying the bearing 13. The wheel 8 turns loosely on the shaft 12, the wheel 9 is pinned to the shaft 1:2 at 18, the wheel 10 is rigid with the shaft 15 and the wheel 11 turns on the shaft 15 and is rigid with thesleeve 16. The shaft 15 which projects both inside and outside of the casing 3 carries the wheel 10 within thecasing and the indicating wheel or member 18 on the exterior of the casing. The sleeve 16 also projects inside and outside of the casing and carriesthe wheel 11 on the interior of the easing and the indicating wheel 19 on the exterior of the casing and in juxtaposition to the indicating wheel 18.

- The forward end of this lever or operating member 57 may be provided with a pocket 60 in which is received a cushion 61. The pocket 60 is formed by dividing the end of the operating member 57 to form a removable piece 62 which is secured by a screw 63 and provided with a tapered bore in which is fitted an inverted cup-shaped member of rubber or other yielding material with flaring walls. By removing the member 62, the
cup-shaped member 61 may be removed, but
it is otherwise held against removal by its flaring walls coiiperating with the tapering opening of the member 62.
The head 53 may be secured by screws 64 to a bridge piece 65 which is attached at its ends to opposite sides of the casing 3 so that a sheet of checks may be passed rearwardly over the.table 6 onto the curved guides 49. To guide the checks, guides 66 may be adjustably secured at 67 to the table 6 at opposite .sides of the latter, and for holding the checks down on the table, spring-arms 68 are adjustably secured at 69 to the bridge 65 and extend forwardly and downwardly from the latter to bear against the table, these arms being connected near their outer ends by rods 70 which coiiperate with the sheets of checks to determine the printing position of the latterf When the machine is to be used for print ing on single checks, the spring arms 68 may be removed and the gages shown in Fig. 6 substituted therefor. These gages preferably have stop portions 71 vertically arranged and cotiperating at their lowerends with the table 6 beneath the bridge piece 65. These vertical stop portions areeach carried by one end of a U-shaped member 72 one arm of which extends below the bridge 65 and the other arm of which extends above the bridge 65 and is provided with a slot 73 which permits the stop portion 71 to be adjusted toward and from the slot 7, the adjusting screw 69 operating in said slot portion 73.
In the operation of the invention, the hand wheels 20 and 27 are adjusted until the proper numbers on the dials 18 and 19 are brought within the openin of the indicator loop 74;. Byv this operatlon, the printing members 8, 9, 10 and 11 have been positioned so that lines of type are presented beneath the slot to print on a check in words and numerals the amount of said check. Either a single check or a sheet of checks is thenplaced face downward on the table 6 and ad justed so that it lies in proper position over the slot 7, after which the operating handle or member 57 is depressed to carry the platen 50 downwardly in order to force the check against the exposed type line.
Instead of the centering means shown in Fig. 5, the centering means shown in Figs. 7 and 8 may be employed. In this construction the two centering wheels 38 and 39 are provided as in the other embodiment, one with a notch for each line of type and the other with a notch for each five lines, so that the wheel will be centered only at lines representing multiples of five. Instead of two plungers only one plunger 78 is employed in the form of a tube having a ball 79 in one endand pressed toward the centering wheel by a coil spring 81 which operates within the plunger 7 8 abutting the latter at one end, and a plug 82 atits other end, the plug being adjustable to vary the tension of the spring and being held in its a slot 85 and holds the carrier 75 in its adjusted position.
By this arrangement the slngle plunger or centering device 78 may be made to engage either the centering wheel 38 or the centering Wheel 39, and owing to the fact that the plunger is eccentrically mounted in a screw 77 it may be adjusted tov shift the centering position slightly so that proper engagement between the printing line and the platen may be obtained.
According to this inventiom, there has been provided a structure in which two dials, controlled by separate operating members at difi'erent ends of the machine, are located in juxtaposition at one side of the machine, so that it is possible to determine immediately what adjustment of the printing members has been efiected. The mechanism for carrying out this result is of'simple construction and not liable to get outof order.

In a check printing machine, two printing wheels, a shaft for each wheel, a hand wheel on eachshaft, two dials one rigidly secured to one shaft and the other mounted to turn on the same shaft in proximity to the first named dial, and driving conneo tion between said second named dial and the other shaft.
4. In a check printing machine, a casing, two printing wheels mounted therein, two alined-shaftsone for each wheel, each of said shafts extending to the exterior of the casing, a hand wheel on the extended portion of each shaft, a dial on the extended portion of oneshaft to turn with the latter, and a dial mounted to turn loosely on said shaft in proximity tothe first named dial and having driving connection with the other shaft.
5.'In a check'printing machine, two sets of type wheels, a pair of alined shafts toeach of which one of the type wheels of one of the sets is rigidly secured, and on each of which the other type wheel of the other set is mounted to turn loosely, and driving connections between 'th cured type wheel on the other shaft.
6. In a check printing machine, .two sets,
V loosely mounted type wheel on one shaft and the rigidly seeach of which one of the type wheels of one of the sets is rigidly secured, and on each of which the other type wheel of the other set is mounted to turn loosely, and driving connections between the loosely mounted type wheel on each shaft and the rigidly secured type wheel on the other shaft, a dial rigidly secured to one of said shafts, a dial mounted to turn loosely on the same shaft, and a sleeve rigidly securing said dial to the type wheel which turns loosely on the shaft.
7. In a check printing machine, a casing, two sets of type wheels arranged in the casingon a common axis, two alined shafts to each of which one of' the type wheels of one of the sets is rigidly secured, and on each of which the other type wheel of the other set is mounted to turn loosely, the shafts being extended from opposite sides of the easing, hand wheels secured to said extended ends, and driving connections between the loosely mounted type wheel on each shaft and the rigidly secured type wheel on the other shaft.
8. In a check printing machine, a casing, two sets of type wheels arranged in the cas- 7 ing on a' common axis, two alined shafts to each of which one of the type wheels of one ofthe sets is rigidly secured, and on each of which the other type wheel of the other set is mounted to turn loosely, the shafts being extended from opposite sides of thecasing, hand wheels secured to said extended ends, and driving connections between the loosely mounted type wheel on each shaft and therigidly secured type wheel on the other shaft, a dial rigidly secured to one shaft on the exterior of the casing in proximity was first named dial, and a sleeve connecting said last named dial with the loosely mounted type wheel within the casing on the same shaft.
9. An operatin lever for check printing machines or the li e comprising a main portion, a removable portion having a tapered opening closed at its bottom by the main portion, and an inverted cup-shaped impact cushion having flaring side walls cooperating with the tapered walls of the removable portion of the lever to be retained in said opening and .having its bottom resting upon the main portion.

In a check printing machine, a bed plate, a casing hinged at '1ts rear to the bed plate, a printing wheel journaled in the cased to be exposed through said slotted topwall, a platen for pressing the work into engagement with type on the type wheel, a support for the platen permitting the work to be fed rearwardly over the top of the casing, and means acting on the under side of thework on opposite sides of the printed area after the printing to lift the work off the top to prevent blurring of the printed matter.
12. In a check printing machine, a casing having a slotted top wall serving as a work support, a type wheel having its type adapted to be exposed through the slot, a platen for pressing the work into engagement with typeon the. type wheel, a support for the platen permitting the work to be fed rearwardly over the top of the casing, two spaced fingers projecting from the top of the casing between the slot and the rear edge of the top wall, and two spaced curved members projectin beyond the rear edge of the top wall and a ove the plane of the top surface to conduct the work to the rear of the casing without contactingwith the rear edge of the casing.
13. In a check printing machine, a casing having a slotted top wall serving as a work support, a type wheel having its type adapt so ed to be exposed through said slotted top wall, a platen for pressing the work into engagement with type on the type wheel, a support for the platen permitting the work to be fed rearwardly over the top of the casing, and spaced devices projecting rearwardly from the casing and adapted to support the work on opposite sides of thc' printed area after it has been printed to prevent blurring of the printed matter.

In a check printing machine, a type cylinder having lines of type thereon any one of which is movable to a printing position, and means for centering each line as it is brought to printing position or for centering only certain lines which are separated from each other. by other lines on i the printing member.
19. In a check printing machine, a type C cylinder having lines of type thereon, any
one of which is movable to a printing position, two centering wheels movable with line of type on the cylinder and the other having notches only for certain lines which are separated. from each other by other lines, and means for cooperating with either of said centerin wheels to center the lines 11 of type at printing point.
' 20. In a check printing machine, a type cylinder having lines of type thereon, any
one of which is movable to a printing posie tion, two centering wheels movable with said cylinder one having notches for each line of type on the cylinder and the otherv having notches only for certain lines which are separated from each other by other lines, and means for cooperating "with either of said centering wheels to center the lines of type at printing point, said means comprising a centering plunger shiftable to engage either of said centering wheels.
21. A centering device comprising a spring pressed plunger having a ball loosely mounted thereon to be carried therewith-in 22. A centering device. comprising a rotary member, a spring pressed tubular plunger eccentrically mounted therein, and aball carried by said tube.
23. In a check printing machine, a type cylinder having lines of type thereon, any ,7 one of which is movable to a printing position, two centering wheels movable with said cylinder one having notches for each line of type on the cylinder and the other having notches only for certain lines which are separated from each other by other lines, and means for cooperating with either of said centering wheels to center the lines ofengagement with the type on the type member, a support for the platen permitting the work to be fed rearwardly over the top wall of the casing, and spaced devices in rear of said slot for engaging the under side of the work on opposite sides of the printed matter to lift the work off the top wall as the work is moved rearwardly.
25. -In a printing machine, a casing, two printing wheels Within the casing rotatable about a common axis, one of said wheels having a shaft rigidly secured thereto to turn therewith and extending through a side wall of the casing, a dial and ahand wheel secured to said shaft, a second hand wheel mounted at the opposite side of the casing and connected to the other printing wheel to turnthe latter, and a second dial having a sleeve surrounding the shaft of the first named dial so that the two dials lic' side by side, said sleeve extending into the casingand being connected to the second hand wheel to be turned by the latter.
