Be it known that I, FRANK M. PIERCE, a citizen. of the United States, and a resident ofthe city of Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements' in a Horizontal-'Shuttle Wrapping-Machine; and '1I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
chine which is adapted to spirallyapply a protecting wrapping-on annular objects of various s1zes.
l It is often desirable that means be provided for protecting annular objects, suc-h as automobile tire casings, rolls of wire, etc., during the time intervening between their manufacture and use; and said protecting means usually comprises a spiral wrapping of paper or other suitable material which is applied with a wrapping machine.
The majority of practical wrapping machines accomplish this effect by rotating the article to be wrapped through the eye of a rotatable jwrappingmaterial shuttle, the relative rotation of the article and the shuttle causing the wrapping material on the shuttle'` to be spirally applied on the article.
' In order to wrap articles of various sizes it is necessary to have adjustable means whereby the same are supported the machine',- and in order that the wrapping may 'be effectively accomplished it is desirable that said adjustable supporting means be arranged to properly position various sizes of articles wlth reference" to the shuttle. It is, of course, also desirable that the wrap'- ping machinebe of simple and strong construction and that the controls therefor adapt .the same to be operated at high speed.
It is an object of this invention to provide a wrapping machine having a horizontally mounted wrapping material carrying shuttle and having adjustable means for rotatably supporting articles to be wrapped in a vertical position.

Said friction clutch 10 and gear 9 are mounted on the outer end of the. shaft 6 which extends outwardly from the frame 1 and has its outer end journaled in a bearing 11 which is supported on an auxiliary frame 12. The friction clutch 10 is adapted to be engagedand disengaged by means of` a 'lever 13 and in order to quickly stop the rotation of the shaft 6 and the operationof the machine when said clutch is disengaged a brake 14 is mounted on the shaft 6 adjacent the bearing l11 and is adapted to be set by the lever 13 when .thev
same is actuated to disengage the clutch 10. Suitable means areQ provided for moving said lever 13 back into neutral position so .that the brake 14 is again released after the machine is stopped. Rota'table wrapping material carrying means are mounted in a grooved guide-way 15 secured to the upper side of the frame 5, 'and said means ordinarily compriseA an open gap horizontal shuttle 16 which has aA l downwardly extending flange 17 adapted to be engaged in said guide-way. Said shuttle is also provided with a peripheral groove 18 which is adapted to receive a driving means.
Mounted on the upper face of said shuttle 16 is a reel 19 which is adapted to receive a spool of wrapping material 20 and from said spool 20 the wrapping material is led-through an adjustable tension device 21 to an edgel folding device 22 which folds the upper edge thereof'downwardly. From said edge-folding device the wrapping material is led around an angle roller 23 which creases the fold in the upper edge of the wrapping material and guides the same to an object 24 such as a bundle of wire or an automobile tire casin which is positioned substantially cen-A trally ofthe shuttle in a gap 25 formed therein.
The drive for said shuttle comprises av belt or rope 26 which is engaged around the driving pulley 8 on the shaft 6 and which extends upwardly over vertical pulleys 27 which are journaled in brackets 2 8 on the inside of the frame 3. From said vertical pulleys 27 said rope or belt 26 is trained around horizontal pulleys 29 which are journaled on shafts 3()-v extending upwardly from the outer extremi` the shuttle 16, the engagement thereof across the gap makes' no appreciable difference in the rotation of the shuttle. In Aorder that said shuttle 16` may be conveniently rotated to position the same for the insertion or removal of an annular article, a suitable hand wheel 37 is mounted on one of the shafts 30 and may be rotated to rotate the pulley 29 on said shaft and thus rotate the shuttle 16to position the same as desired. f The mechanisms which are employed fo adj ustably and rotatably supporting the article to be wrapped will now be described. The outer portions of the yframe 4 extend diagonally downwardly and' outwardly and in each of said outer portions is formed anb angular slot 38, the upper end 39 of which extends in a vertical direction for av short distance. Formed on the inner sides of the outer portions of the flange 4 and in continuation of the slot48 are angulargrooves 40 and vertical extensions 41 lof said angular groove 40 are parallel with the vertical slot extension 39 ofthe slot 38. Said sprocket chains are led downwardly around the sprocket wheelI 52 and upwardly around sprocket wheels 57 which are ro" tatably mounted on the outside-of the frame 4 above the point 55. These sprocket chains extend longitudinally of the outside of lthe l machine andthe ends thereof are each connected to a 'drum 58 mounted on a-shaft 59 which is journaled in brackets 60 supported on the frame 3. Means are provided for rotating said shaft 59 whereby the sprocket chains. 56 maybe shortened or lengthened by winding the same on the drums'58 or unwinding them therefrom. For thls purpose a worm gear 61 is secured yon the said shaft 59 outside of one'of the I drums 58 and is adapted to be engaged by a worm 62 Awhich is mounted on a vertical shaft 63 pivoted in one of'the brackets 60 and provided at` its upper end with a crank 64 whereby it may be rotated. The rotation l of said crank 6`4 serves to wind the'chain 56 l pass substantially through the center of the shuttle. Since this angular movement of the rollers 49 and 5 0 on the frame 46 is not practicable for annular objects of small diameters, the vertical portion 39 of the slot pro vides fora direct up and down adjustment for these sizes. In order to allow an extreme upward movement of the frame 46 the slots 65 Y are provided in the under side of the frame member 4` to allow the shaft 51 on fsaid'frame 46 to move therein.
` The mechanism which-is provided for rotating the supporting rollers 49 and 50 at different rates of speed and simultaneously with the rotation of the shuttle'16 will nowv be described. Power for driving said mechanism is obtained from a worin l66 which is mounted on the shaft 6 and which meshes with a worm gear 67 secured to a shaft 68 which is journaled transversely of a frame 69 mounted on the base 1 inside the frame 3. Mounted on said shaft '68 is-a gear' 70 and power from said shaft is transmitted to said gear 70 and through a suitable sliding selective gear mechanism 71, 72, 73, toa
. shaft 74 which is also journaled transversely of the frame 69 and which has secured on one end thereof a sprocket wheel 75 as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 6. Rotatably mounted on the frame 69 adjacent the sprocket wheel 75 is an idler sprocket whee'l 76 and engaged around said sprocket wheel 75 and over said idler sprocket wheel 76 is a driving sprocket chain 77 which is engaged over sprocket wheels 78 and 79 mounted on the shafts 47 and 48 outside the frame 46 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said chain 77 eX- tends downwardly from the sprocket wheel 79 over an idlersprocket wheel 80 which is mounted on the shaft 51 near lthe lowerpart of the frame 46. Means for maintaining a proper tensio on the ldriving chain 77 at` all times, comprise a weighted arm 81 which is pivotally mounted on the end of the shaft 74 and which has pivoted thereon an idler sprocket wheel 82 which is adapted'to engage said driving chain 77 between the idler sprockets 76 and 80. This adjustment is made very easy by the fact that the operator can readily judge the position of this extreme inner point with relation to the shuttle by glancing at the same. After the supporting rollers 49-and 50 are proper`ly adjusted the upper guiding rollers 83 are placedon the top of the article 24 and wrapping material from the spool 2O is engaged through the tension device 121, the edge-folder 22 and aroundj the angle roller 23 and held aofainst the'article which is to be wrapped. zilhe machine is then started by moving the lever 13 so as to engage the friction clutch 10 whereupon the driving mechanisms are rotated from the shaft 6 to eHect the relative rotation of the article 24 and the shuttle 16, and to spirally apply wrapping material onthe article. At the time the wrapping is begun the peripheral strip from the mechanism 87 is applied thereon, and when the wrapping is comarticles which have been wrapped are easily inserted therein and removed therefrom and manual rotation of the shuttle to properly position the same for this insertion or removal is conveniently effected by means of a hand wheel 37.
vIt will accordingly be observed that this vinvention provides asimple, effective wrapping machine which is adapted to be operated at high speed and in which the articles tobe wrapped are supported in such a position that the wrapping thereof is effectively accomplished. That it is possible to obtain this result on varioussizes of annular articles is directly due to the provision of the angular slots 38 whereby the supporting rollers 49 and 50 are differentially move into adjusted'position toward'or away from the shuttle.
While there has been shown and described herein one type of shuttle and wrapping material applying mechanism, it is apparent that the wrappingnmachine of this invention could be successfully operated with various types of shuttles, for example, with a shuttle of the type wherein the wrapping material is contained in the interior thereof in folded layers.
It is understood that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles lof this invention and it is therefore not'purposed to limit the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
Claims:
1. A wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatable shuttle thereon, means for rotatably supporting an article to be wrapped, and a slotted frame for guiding said supporting means, the upper portions of the slots vin said frame being vertical and the lower portions thereof extending in an angular direction.
2. A wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatable shuttlethereon, means for supporting an article to be wrapped and lrotating the same through the shuttle, a frame for said supporting means, and an angularly positioned track inv whichv the Aframe is movable.
3: A wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatable horizontal shuttle thereon,
adjustable, means for rotatably supporting an article to be wrapped, and slotted gulding means for restraining movement of said' supporting means to an angular direction relative to the shuttle.
4. A wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatable shuttle thereon, adjustable means for rotatably supporting an said supporting means, an angularly slotted guiding means, and means on the second mentioned frame engaged in the slots' in the driving means.
6. wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatableshuttle thereon, means vfor supporting an article to be wrapped and l rotating the same through the shuttle, a frame for said supporting means, an angularly positioned track in which the frame is movable, a sprocket on the second mentioned frame, a sprocket chain secured to the rst mentioned frame. and engagevd'under said sprocket, and means connected with said sprocket chain for moving thesame to ad-y just the position of the second mentioned frame and the supporting means thereon.
7. A wrapping machine comprising av frame, a rotatable shuttle thereon, adjustableV means for rotatably supporting an article to be wrapped, a chain drive for said means, and means for maintaining a substantially constant tension on said drive for allv positions'of the supporting means.
8. A wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatable 4shuttle thereon, adjustable means for rotatably supporting an article to be'wrapped, a chain drive l'for said means, and gravity actuated means lfor maintaining asubstantially constant tension on said drive for all positions ofthe supporting 9. A -wrapping vmachine comprising a frame, a rotatable shuttle thereon, adjustable means for rotatably supporting an article to .be wrapped, `a flexible driving means for said adjustable means, andl means for maintaining a substantially constant tension on said flexible driving means forall positions of the supporting means. j

A wrapping machine comprising a frame, a rotatable shuttle thereon, means for supporting an article to be wrapped and rotating the same through the shuttle, and a guideway for said supporting means, the upper portions of said guideway being Vertical and the lower portions thereof extending in an angular direction.
