The locomotive driving wheel 1 is mounted upon the axle 2 which carries the journal box 3 in the usual-:mannen Journal box 3 is mounted in a pedestal 4 which is provided with the pedestal binder 5.

contacting faces of shoe 10 and wedge 11 are inclined from the vertical and a bolt 12 passes through wedge 11 in the plane of the inclination lof the shoe Contactin4 face, engaging the top of the wedge, an its lower end passes through a rib 13 on member 8, and, by means of nuts 14, may be drawn downward to lower wedge 11 and thereby feed shoe 10 and box 3 outwardly. Member 8 is provided with anintegral ange 15 in which is screwed a set screw 16 which may beused for locking shoe 10 in any desired position. v
When the parts shown are assembled, bolt 12 is tightened until the proper fit between journal box 3, shoe 10, and wheel 2 is obtamed, and the bolt and shoe are then locked 1n position. At any time when the play between the box and the wheel becomes excessive, nuts 14 and set screw 16 may be loosened, wedge 11 inserted a suiicient distance to take up the play, and'bolts 14 and set screw16 again tightened.
If it is desired to remove box 3 for the purposes of repair, container member 81j'with shoe 10 and wedge 11 may be entirely re.

3. 151,1 combination with the pedestal and wheel of a locomotive, an axle journalvboX` movable transversely of the pedestal and f held against movement toward the wheel by engagementl of the 'hub of the wheel and against oppositev movement by an adjustable bearing shoe.
4. In a locomotive, a pedestal, a journal box therein, an integral side extension on said pedestal, a containing member removably secured to said' side extension, and journal box holding means mounted in said member and adjustable transversely of said pedestal.

7. in a locomotive pedestal, a tmnsversely extending bracket, a container member removabiy secured thereto, a longitudinal recess in said member, a tapered Wedge seated in said recess, a journal box bearing shoe seated against said Wedge, a'bolt passing throughsaid Wedge in the plane of its taper, elements cooperating with said bolt and member to dravvsaid Wedge through said reiseaeoe cess, and means for ioeking said shoe in Wedge-adjusted position.

The combination with a locomotive trame provided with journal box openings, of Ilangeless journal boxes positioned in said openings, the outer projecting ends of which journal boxes are positioned adjacent to the hubs of the Wheels carried by the axle that has bearing in said journal boxes, and detachable brackets disposed toward each other and secured to a part of the locomotive frame on opposite sides of the axle space and provided with relatively movable means for adjustably retaining the journal boxes in position Within said journal box openings.
9. The combination with a locomotive frame provided With journal box openings, of iiangeless journal boxes positioned in said openings, the outer projecting ends of which journal boxes are located adjacent to the hubs of the Wheels carried bythe axle that has bearing in said journal boxes, detachable brackets disposed toward each other and secured to a part of the locomotive frame on opposite sides of the axle space, and removable bearing plates detachably and adjust ably secured to said brackets and coperating with the inner faces of the journal boxes to retain them in position.
