BAG-FRAME GATCI-I 0R HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgiggntefl D 13 1921 Application filed. June 15, 191a. Serial No. 240,162.
ToaZZ whom it mayooncern 1 i 1 Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Lo rz, citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Catches or Hasps; and I do hereby. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements inframefasteners or retaining devices for holding or securing thehinged sections of bag-frames, and the like, in their closed relation; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of bag-frame fastener comprising a retaining member in the formof a head or button mounted upon one of the frame-sections, and a hasp-member secured to the other bag-frame section, said member having hinged thereto a resilient hasp made of spring-wire,thewire-members of which are adapted to be sprung into separable holding or retaining engagement with the said head or-button, so as to bring the parts of the frame-fastenerinto their positively locked relation and to thereby maintain the closed relation of the hinged bag frame sections.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and. simple construction of bag-frame fastener of the general character above stated, and hereinafter more fully set forth, which actsto positively secure the hinged frame-sections in their closed relation, and at the same time is easily manipulated to permit the bag-frame sections to be brought into their opened or separated positions. l
Other objectsof the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly evident from, the following detailed description of the present invention. a With the various objects of the present invention in view, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel'bag-frame catch or hasp hereinafterset forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the corn struction of the said parts, allof which will be more fully described in the following speolfication, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification. p The lnvention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which F1gure 1 is a top or plan view of the one end-portion of the hinged bag-frame section, showing the same. in their closed relation, and a top or plan View of a bag-frame catch or hasp made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, secured to said frame-sections, the several parts of the catch or hasp being represented 1n the engaged or locked positions.
Fig.2 is a view of the several parts represented in said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow as.
Fig. 3 is. a transverse vertical sectional representation of the same devices and parts, said section being taken on line 33 in said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow y; Fig. i is a similar section, taken on line 4:"4: in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow 2.
Similar characters of. reference are em- 'ployed in the said above described views, to
indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, it will be seen that my novel form of bag-frame fastener is especially adapted to bag-frames comprising an outer and an inner frame-section, each frame-section being L-shaped in cross-section. In the said figures, the referencecharacter 1 indicates the usual outer 'face-portion or member, of the larger and outer frame-section, which is provided along one of its marginal edges with a side-portion or member 111 extending at a right-angle therefrom, and that the outer face-portion or member of the smaller and inner frame-section is indicated by the reference-character 2, from one of the marginal edges of which extends at a right angle, a side-portion or member 12, said frame-sections when in their closed relation, being usually disposed in a manner substantially as indicated in Figs. 1, 3 and lof the drawings.
The reference-character 3 indicates a complete bag-frame fastener or hasp made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the same comprising Cir a hasp-engaging' member or element, in the form of a head or button 4, having a contracted neck-portion 5, so as to provide an annular retaining rim or head, as 6. One
means of securing the said head or button upon the top of the outer face-portion or member of the larger and outer frame-section is by means of suitably formed clamping lugs or ears, as 7 which extend from the lower marginal edge-portions of the walls of said head or button, through suitably disposed slots 8, and are bent in clamped relation against the under or inner face of said frame-section,as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings. Other means of securing the said head or button upon the top of the outer face-portion or member of the larger and outer frame-section may be employed, if desired.
The hasp or locking member which is adapted to be brought into holding engagement with the said] head or button consists, essentially, of a plate 9 provided with clamping lugs or ears 10 which are passed through slots or openings 11 in the sidemember 12 of the smaller and inner framesection and are securely clamped down upon the inner face of said member 12, as will be evident from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings,,so as to secure said plate 9 in its operative position, as shown. Upon the marginal edge-portion, the said plate 9 is formed with an ear or lug, as 13, for mounting therein in a hinge-likemanner, the end-portions 14 of a wire-frame or structure forming the catch-member or hasp of the device. This frame or structure, as will be seen froman inspection of F 1g. 1
of the drawings, consists of two inwardly .nate in the straight and parallel and up wardly curving portions 18, connected asat 1,9, and providing. a'suitable fingerpiece for forcing the grasping portions 17 over the rim orbead-of the head or button on opposite sides thereof, and into. separable holdlng contact with the contracted portion or neck of said head or button, for retaming the hinged frame-sections in their closed relation, as will be readily understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings- Slight pressure, by the operator, upon said fingerpiece, in either direction will readily;
bring the hasp-plate. into'its engaged or into its disengaged relation with the nosing of the bolt, according in which direction the pressure is applied to saidfingerpiece.
From the foregoing description, and from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, it will be seen that I have devised a simply constructed and efficiently operating catch or hasp for the hinged frame-sec tions of traveling bags, and the like, the arrangement of the parts bein such that the device can be easily manipulated, without annoyance to the operator, to open or close the hinged frame- sections 1 and 2.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, it will be clearly evident, that when the two frame-sections have been brought into their opened relation, and if the pivoted hasp-element has not been thrown back sufiiciently to assume the dotted position indicated in said figures, the said hasp-element will rest directly upon the upper surface of the smaller and inner frame-section.
At the same time, the upwardly curved portion 18 of the hasp-element is such, that when the frame-sections are closed, the edge of the upper face portion of the larger and outer frame-section will ride against the under surface-portion of the part 18, thus causing the hasp-element to he raised in an upward direction over said frame-section, and over the head or button 4, for readily forcing the curved head or button-grasping portions 17 into holding relation with the neck of said head or button.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described inthe said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. In combination with the outer and inner hinged frame-sections of a bag-frame, said inner frame-section being adapted to be closed within. the outer frame-section, a button-shaped element mounted upon said outer frame-section, and a hasp-element secured to said inner frame-section, said element comprising a pair of resilient members adapted to be forced into separable retaining engagement with said button, and being further adapted to be folded down against the outer face of said outer frame-section so as not to interfere with the closing of said frame section, and a fingerpiecc connected with said resilient members.
2. In combination with theouter and inner hinged frame-sections of a bag-frame, said inner frame-section being adapted to be. closed within the outer frame-section, a button-shaped element mounted upon said outer frame-section, and a hasp-element secured to said inner frame-section, said element comprising a fixed member, a button engaging liasp hinged to said fixed member, said hasp consisting of a pair of resilient members adapted to be forced into separable retaining engagement with said button, and being further adapted to be folded down against the outer face of said outer framesection so as not to interfere with the closing of said frame-sections, and a fingerpiece connected With said resilient members.
In testimony that l[ claim the invention 15 set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of June, 1918.
