Z '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY H. TROXEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resilient Heels and Tread-Inserts, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in resilient heels and tread inserts,'the heel being improved through the provision of certain novel cooperating features of construction together with an improved wear resistin tread insert. I
y invention relates more particularly to an improved wear resisting tread insert particularly designed and adapted for use in the specific form of a nail or a fastener to be inserted in any portion of a shoe heel or sole forthe purpose of preventing wear without impairing the resiliency thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved resilient heel and tread insert of the character indicated which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and efficient in use.
A further and very the invention is the provision of a generally improved fastener or tread insert for shoes comprising relatively fixed and movable shank and head members, said shank member, in the present instance, being in the specific form of a nail adapted to be driven into the tread ortion of a shoe heel, or the like, and said liead member being in the specific form of a relatively movable head or wear resisting tread member adapted to protect the elastic tread portion and to move inwardly and outwardly with the latter dur-' ing the walking ortread movements of the important object of Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the under or face side of a resilient heel of the full heel type embodying improved fastener tread inserts constructed and arranged in accordance with this invention.

The improved heel may be either of the full heel type, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, or of the heel-lift type, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.
' The improved heel or heel lift comprises a suitable resilient body 1, preferably of suitable homogeneous molded rubber or resilient composition, said resilient heel being preferably provided with similarly shaped tread and recess portions 1 and 1*, respectively. The tread portion 1, may be of any suitable form or configuration and is preferably arranged slightly to one side of the rear central portion of the heel, and the recess portion 1 is adapted to form an air cushioning chamber 1, in the top portion of the resilient heel body above the tread por tion 1 and to cooperate with the latter in giving the requisite cushioning effect;

When it is desired to drive the tread insert into the resilient treadportion to be,
protected, the telescoping members 3'and 4,
may be initially retracted to the position indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, so that the head 3 will come into engagement with the under side of the tread head 4, and the 7 parts may then be driven 1n a manner similar to an ordinary nail or fastener. It will be obvious that the resiliency of the heel or adjacent tread portionwill cause the final blows imparted-to the head 4, to drive the head3 of the nail or shank 3, slightly beyond or out of the plane of the tread surface of the heel, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the resiliency of the adjacent portion'returning the tread head portion 4 to the normal plane of the heel, and
it will thus be obvious that in the ordinary use of the heel the initial tread movement of theheel will cause the tread head to yield and move downwardly therewith until stopped by the engagement of the inner side of the head 4, with the head 3 of the shank or nail member 3, acting as a stop member therefor. V r 1 j The wear resisting tread or head member 4 may be of any suitable form or configuration, as for example, in the form of an elongated head or plate, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, and, if it is desired, to also limit the outward movement of the tread head 4 as in an ordinary fastening element, the tubular shank 4 maybe shortened somewhat so that the stop flanges 4 will engage with the head 3 in the normal position of the tread insert 4', as indicated most clearly in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
Any suitable number of tread inserts may be used, as for example, a series or plurality of suitably spaced tread inserts, as shown in Fig; l of the drawings, or where an elongated head or plate is used a single insert may be used, asshown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.
While I have shown my improved wear resisting tread insert in connection with a resilient shoe heel, it will be obvious and should be understood that the basic principles thereof may be readily adapted'for use in other places, as for example, the tread or .tip portions of a resilient shoe sole, as well as in other places where it is desired to pre- V serve the resiliency of the material and'at the sametime protect the same from wear.
Having thus described some of the embodiments of my invention, without having attempted to set forthall the'forms in which it may be made, or all the modes of its'use, what I claim and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is,- r V V r 1.
