Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
Application filed May 27, 1921- Serial No. 473,146.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT L. HUFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Sheet-Delivering Mechanism for Vending-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to sheet delivering mechanism for vending machines and is particularly adapted for use in connection with vending machines such as shown in Patent No. 1,276,923 granted to me August 27, 1918. It may, however, be used in connection with other types of vending machines.
The object of my invention is to obviate the use of a spring mounted support for the sheets to be vended, together with the mechanism for controlling the movement of such support, thus greatly simplifying the mechanism as a whole. This result, I accomplish by providing yieldingly mounted contact members for engaging with the sheet so that said members automatically compensate for the varying number of sheets carried by the holder.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of device made inaccordance with my invention, Figure 1 1s a vertical central section, Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 s an enlarged section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The casing of my device, which is preferably formed of sheet metal, consists of two parts 5 and 6, respectively, secured to gether in any suitable manner so that the part 6 may be removed from the part 5 to renew the sheets. 7 indicates the sheet holder which is secured to the rear wall of the part 5 and is adapted to carry the sheet 8. These sheets 8 are provided with suitable perforations arranged adjacent to their edges and engaging with pins 9 so that a sheet may be torn from the pack by being engaged by suitable mechanism and moved downwardly. 10 indicates the operating shaft which is rotated by means of a hand wheel 11. The
rotation of the shaft 10 may be governed by any suitable coin controlled mechanism, such, for example, as that shown in my prior patent above referred to. shaft 10 are two pairs of arms 12 provided wlth heads 13 for limiting their movement. Mounted upon each pair of arms 12 is a contact member 14: having a curved outer surface carrying a facing 15 of rubber, emery, or other material which will adhere to the sheet 8 when the device is operated so as to tear the said sheet on its supporting pins 9. 16 are coil springs surrounding the arms 12 and situated between the shaft 10 and the member 14 so as to force the said member out into the position shown in Fig. 1. The length of the arms 12 should be such that when the contact member is in its outer position it will follow a circle, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, of such diameter as to engage a sheet directly against the holder 7. When a number of sheets are contained in a holder, the mem Mounted in the ber 14 will be forced toward the shaft 10 as I shown in Fig. 3 thus automatically compensating for the combined thickness of the number of sheets in the holder. While I have shown two arms 12 for each of the contact members 14 it will be evident that a single arm may be used if the arm is made angular or other means is provided for preventing the rotation of the arm in the shaft.
Then the shaft 10 is rotated by means of the hand wheel 11, the contact members 15 will be caused to engage with the top sheet to tear the said sheet from its supporting pins 9 and start it through the discharge (passage 17 in the part 5 of the casing. After which the continued rotation of the shaft will cause the contact members to move out of engagement with the sheet to allow the completion of its delivery through the said passage 17 Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described. the
it to automatically compensate for the numspring surrounding said erm between said her of sheets carried by said holder. shaft and contact member to allow the latter 2. 'In a device of the class described, the to compensate for the number of sheets car- 10 combination with astationary sheet holder, ried by said holder. r o of a rotary shaft, an arm sliding in said In testimony whereof I have hereunto set shaftand carrying a contact member for my hand and aflixed my seal. disengaging e sheet from the holder, and a GILBERT'L'.
