To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD PossoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Compound Hand- Brake echanism, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to a compound hand-brake mechanism, and the present invention is an improvement on the apparatus described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 263,999, filed November 25, 1918.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a brake mast or *shaft formed in complementary parts which are connected by transmitting mechanism adapted to lncrease the power applied to the brakes. For this purpose the brake mast is formed in two parts .which are connected by gear mechanism located in a housing carried by the end sill of the car. The upper partof the brake mast is manually operated by the brakeman, and the lower part of the mast which is con nected to the brake chains moves at a lesser.
speed than the upper part, but the force applied thereto is multlphed by the lntermediate gearing mechanism. Other ob ects relate to various features of construction and arrangement which are pointed out more fully hereinafter.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings in which one embodiment is illustrated.

In the drawing, the end, sill 10 of the car is shown as comprising a channel beam 10 connected to upper and lower plates. 10 and 10. A bufi'er plate 11 is secured to the endsill 10 at the middle part thereof, and this bufier plate carries a draw-bar carrier 12 is provided with apertured lugs 16 engaged which rests upon by bolts 1'7 which securethe housing to the 1 supporting plate. The housing 15 is provided with an upwardly extending hood or casing 15*, carrying at its upper part a hub 18 which forms a bearing for the lower cylindrical portion of the upper part 20 of the brake mast 20. The hand-wheel 21 is secured to the upper end of the brake mast, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit the operation thereof by the brakeman. The upper part 20 of the brake mast is surrounded by the collar 22 within the portion 15* of the hous- 1ng,' and this collar is secured thereto by a bolt 23, so that the withdrawal of the brake mast from the housing is prevented. The upper part of the brake mast is provided beneath the-collar 22 with a part 24 of rectangular cross-section which forms a drivmg engagement with a compound gear member 25 having at the upper part thereof a ratchet wheel 26, the teeth of which are engagedby a pawl 27 pivoted on a bolt 28 extending downwardly through the casing 15 and through the plate 14. The lower part of the gear member 25 is provided with a pinion 29 which meshes with the teeth of a gear 30 located in the lateral extension 15 of the housing and pivoted on a bearing pin 31 which extends through apertures in the upper and lower walls of the housing and is secured in position by a transversepin 32 extending through the boss 33 formed on the upper wall of the housing. A pinion 35 located below and formed integrally with the gear 30 is adapted to mesh with a gear 36, by which the lower portion 20 of the brake mast is driven. The gear 36 is pro vided with an integral downwardly extending hub or sleeve 36 which receives the upper extremity of the lower portion of the brake mast and is secured thereto by a pin 37. A cylindrical aperture 38 in the upper part of the gear 36 is adapted to receive the cylindrical lower extremity 39 of he upper portion 20 of the brake mmt. e
part 39 rotates in the bearing .38 and thus maintains the two portions of the brake mast in alinement. The gear 36 is provided on its underside with an annular groove 40, forming a raceway for the ball-bearings 41 which travel upon the upper surface of the plate 1% and thus support the weight of the brake mast, it being apparent that the gear member 25 and the upper portion 20 of the brake mast are adapted to rest upon and be su ported by the gear 36,
he lower portion 20 of the brake mast extends downwardly below the end sill of the car, and the lower reduced extremity 4:3 thereof is journaled in the horizontal portion of the step 44 which is carried by the end sill. The lower portion of the brake mast is provided with an aperture 45adapted to be engaged by a bolt or the like for securing the brake mast to the chaln or other device by which the brakes are operated.
In the operation of the nvention, the rotation of the upper portion of the brake mast operates to drive the pinion 29, which in turn drives the relatively large gear 30 formed integrally with the p1 n1on 35. The relatively small pinion drivesthe large gear 36, and thus the lower portion of the brake shaft is rotated at a lesser speed than the upper part, although the torce applied by the lower portion 20* is multiplied. After i the brakes have been set in the desired position, the pawl 28 may be thrown into the proper position to engage the ratchet wheel 26, and thereby prevent rotation of elther the upper or lower part of the brake mast. The simple construction of the driving gears and the formation of adjacent gears asintegral members make it possible to provide a compact transmitting mechanism which occupies a minimum amount of space adj acent the end sill of the car.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention for purposes of illustration, it willbe understood that it may be constructed in various other forms without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination in railway brake mechanism, of a brake mast formed in alinmg sections, gears mounted on the adjacent en s of said sections, an integrally formed gear member mounted on one side of said first-named gears and meshing therewith, a ratchet wheel formed integrally with one of said gears, and a pawl adapted to engage said ratchet wheel.
2. The combination in railway brake mechanism, of a brake mast formed in alining sections, gears mounted on the adjacent ends of said sections, an integrally formed ear member mounted at one side of said rst-named gears and meshing therewith, a ratchet whee formed integrally with one Of said raceway and adapted to travel on said plate.
4:. The combination in railway brake ,mechanism, of a vertical brake mast formed in alining sections, gears mounted on the adjacent ends of said sections,other gears operatively connecting said first-named gears, the lower one of said first-named gears being provided with an annular raceway, a supporting plate mounted beneath said gears, and ball-bearings mounted in said raceway to travel on said plate.
5. The combination in railway brake mechanism, of avertical brake mast formed in alining sections, a gear secured to the upper end of the lower section, gearing .mechanism for connecting said gear with the upper section of said brake mast, said upper section and a portion of said gear mechanism being supported by said gear, said gear being provided with an annular raceway on its underside, a supporting plate having an aperture therethrough to receive the lower section of said mast, and ball-bearings mounted in said raceway and adapted to travel on said plate.
6. The combination in railway brake mechanism, of a vertical brake mast formed in two alining sections, a horizontal supporting plate, a housing mounted on said plate, a pair of gears connected to the ends of said shaft within said housing, and a pair of integrally formed gears mounted in said housing and meshing with said first-named gears.
7. The combination in railway brake mechanism, of a vertical brake mast formed in two alining sections, a horizontal supporting plate, a housing mounted on said plate, a gear mounted to the lower section of said mast within said housing, said'gear having a part forming a bearing for the lower extremity of the upper section of said mast, a second gear mounted upon said upper section above said first-named gear, and
a pair of connecting gears mounted in said housing and meshing with said first and second named gears.
8.
