Description
GQE. GODDARD.
LAMP SUPPORTING MEANS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10. 1916.
055; Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. GODDARD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSTG-N'OR'TO PACKARD MOTOR CAR COMPANY, 'OF DETROIT,.MICHIGAN, A. CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
LAMP-SUPPORTING MEANFOR MOTOB-VEHIGLES.
Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to lamps and supporting means, therefor, and particularly to such lamps as are employed on motor vehicles.
The salient object of 'the invention is to provide a rigid and simple lamp and support construction, arranged preferably so that the lamp may be conveniently removed from its support. I
Other objects of the invention will ap pear from the following description taken.
in connection with the drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure l'is partly a plan View and partly. a horizontal section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, through a lamp and supporting means embodying this invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents one of the panels of a motor vehicle which, in the form of the invention shown, constitutes the support upon which the lamp 11 is mounted. The panel 10 is formed with a round fiat surface 12 in the center of which is an opening 13. To reinforce the panel at this fiat portion, a block 14 is provided, this blo'cli being riveted or otherwise secured to the panel 10 as shown in the drawing.
The lamp 11, above; referred to, is preferably of parabolic form and provided with a front openin 15 over which is a detachable lens 16. This lens is adapted to rest against an annular flange 17 and a split ring 18 retains the lens in position. By contracting and removing the split ring 18 the lens may also be removed.
Apart of one side of the lamp body is cutaway as at 19, and a piece 20 is secured over this out awa portion and is formed with a round fiat sur ace 21 tocorrespond to the fiat surface 12 of the supporting panel 10. The iece 20 also has an extension or boss 22, whic is adapted to fit the opening 13 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfliled June 10,
Patented'Dec. 6, 1921. 1916. Serial no. 102,945.
an opening 14' formed in the block 14. By
this means the lamp 11 is suitably positioned on the supporting panel 10 with the flat face 21 against the fiat face 12-of the supporting panel.
Secured to the inside face of the piece 20 is a reinforcing plate 23 having an inward extension or hollow boss 24 in line with the extension or boss 22. i
For rigidly and detachably connecting the lamp to the support, one or a series of screws 25 is provided,'three of them being shown in the drawings, and .these screws pass through suitable openings in the parts 20 and 23, and into the panel and block 14, the latter having suitable threaded openings for the purpose. As will be seen, the piece'20 is arranged diagonally on the lamp body so that these screws 25 are accessible through the front opening 15 of the lamp after the lens 16 has been removed. Thus to detach the lamp it is onlynecessary to remove the lens 16 and insert a screw driver through the front opening 15 and remove the screws 25. The lamp is then loose and the boss 22 be arran ed a lamp socket 27 upon which i are the binding posts 28, and a lamp or bulb 29 which is likewise accessible through the front opening of the lamp.
But one. form of the invention has been shown and described, but it will be understood that other forms may be used without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a lamp body having a front opening, a detachable lens for said opening, and a boss extending diagonally both inwardly and outwardly from the Wall of said lamp body, of a support surrounding the outwardly extending part of said boss, a lamp bulb in the inwardly extending part of saidboss, and detachable securing means for said lamp body to said support accessible through said front opening.
2. In combination, a supporting member 'g asaaoaa having an opening therethrough, a lamp in alinement with the first mentioned boss body having an openingand provided with and means accessible from the front of said a boss extending rearwardly from'the'body lamp for securing the flat surfaces of said 10 and a substantially flat surface surrounding reinforcing member and said boss to said said boss, a reinforcing plate having a flat supporting member.
surface adapted -to seat on the flat surface of In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. said lamp body and having a boss disposed GEORGE E. GODDARD.
