\ Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial No.
T his invention relates to improvements in pliers and has for an object the provision of means for holding the jaws of the pliers against opening movement.
As is well known, a pair of pliers may often be advantageously used in the removal of nuts or the disassociation of devices except for the fact that it sometimes requires more strength to hold the jaws of the pliers in operative position than is possessed by the workman, the leverage inserted in at tempting to turn the nut or other member acting to force the jaws open and thereby rendering the pliers useless for that purpose.
In order to overcome this leverage, the present invention aims to provide an attachment which is carried by the pliers and capable of being moved into position to prevent opening movement of the jaws, so that the latter may be adjusted to a nut or other obj ect and the attachment operated to hold the jaws against being forced open.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of pliers with the invention attached thereto, th e latter being shown in an inactive position.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the invention in use.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 1 is a detailed view of a modified form of the attachment.
5 is a detailed view of another means for mounting the dog.
6 shows a modified form of oneend of the dog.
Fig. 7 is a view showing a further modification.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the jaws of a pair of pliers which are pivotally secured together as shown at 11 and provided with operating handles 12.
line 33 Specification. of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. 28 1921.
As is usual in pliers of this character, the jaws are reduced at their point of pivotal connection so that the opposite faces of the pliers" may be substantially flush and by thus reducing the thickness of the jaws a shout der 13 is provided.
The invention resides in the provision of a dog 14 which is pivotally secured as shown at 15 upon one jaw of the pliers, the free end of this dog being preferably slightly curved and roughened or serrated for engagement with the shoulder 13. The rough-v ened or serrated end is also beveled so that the dog will engage the shoulder at various degrees of opening of the jaws. In order to hold the dog against accidental pivotal movement, a spring washer 16 is interposed, beneath the head of the pivot pin 15 and bears upon the face of the dog.
The pliers may he used in the usual manner with the dog in the position shown in Fig. 1, but when moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, any amount of leverage may be applied to the handles 11 without forcing the jaws open. It is preferred to provide the jaw to which the dog is pivoted with an ex tension 17 to provide for a wider range of adjustment for the jaws.
In Fig. 4: thereis illustrated a detailed view of one of the dogs 141. This is in all respects similar to the dog shown in the other figures except that its free beveled end is straight instead of curved.
The inventionis susceptible of various other changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. 7
Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a pair of pliers hav ing a pair of jaws pivotally secured together andprovided with shoulders disposed transversely of their gripping ends, of a lateral extension formed on one jaw adjacent the pivotal connection, a dog having one end pivotally secured to said extension and its opposite end beveled for adjustable engagement with the outer end of the shoulder of the other jaw to limit the opening movement of the'jaws.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDWARD M. LOFTUS.
