The invention relates to headlights for vehicles, and more particularly for automobiles, although it will be understood that the invention maybe carried out in connection with other devices such as locomotives and trolley cars.
.The object of the invention is to produce a headligl'it by means of which no light rays will beso thrown as to interfere with the vision of' persons 'using 'the road.
A further object is to construct the device so vthat all of the light from the source `:vill be utilized to illuminate the roadway and vicinity.

One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts in all of the several/figures are designated by similar reference characters, and inwhich- Figure l ,-is a longitudinal sectional view of an automobile head light embodying the invention, the section beingA taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. f

ln Figs. l, 2 and 3 the invention is shown an attachment for use in connection with existing forms of headlights. ln this enibodiment of the invention l designates a rcflector, 2 the source of illumination, 3 the glass frontend l the annulus for retaining the glass in position. The lamp 2 is located in the horizontal center of the reflector and the socket 5 extends through the reflector and has attache thereto the leading in. wire 6.
A Carried within the reflector l is anauxiliary reflector 7 which partially surrounds the lamp 2. This auxiliary reflector surrounds the lamp to such an extent as to intercept all rays of lig-ht emanatinnr from the lamp below the plane ol the horizontal center and prevent such rays 'from reaching` the parabolic reflecting surface below the plane of the focal center of such reflector.
.lhe auxiliary reflector 7 is preferably in the forni of a cylindrical trough witli its concave or inner 'surface highly reiicctive. The rear end of the trough vis inclosed by means of a. wall 8 which is shaped to conform to the configuration of the apex of the reflector l. The wall Sis provided with an open ended slot il throuo'h which the socket of' the lamp projects and will permit ready removal of tli auxiliary reflector 7.
ln the `front end ot the reflector 7 in line with the focal axis ot the reflector i and in proximity to the glass 2l is carried a .screen l() preferably of semi-transparent or opalescent character. The screen l() may, however, be of opaque material desired. The screen may be secured to the trough in any desired ,manncror it may be attached to or form a part of the zglass 3. in the drawings, Figs. l, 2 and 3 the screen is illustrated as prov vided with a frame ll secured to the trough 7 and surrounding the edges of the screen but it will be understood that the screen may be secured invplaceby other means and that the frame may be omitted if desired.
