' FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
`Patented Nov. 29,1921'.
Application filed November 9, 1920. Serial No. 422,824.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN GRooMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a folding chair, and more particularly to a chair designed especially for the use of young children.
One object is to provide a device of the type indicated which when in a givenposition shall constitute a so called high-chair, and which may be partly folded or collapsed, so that the seat portion will ybe nearer the floor and the frame work will provide a small inclosure within which the child may be allowed to play, being thus limited in its movements, without undue confinement.
A further object is to provide a device kof the type indicated which shall include a seat portion, a back connected therewith, and a supporting device comprising a frame work which shall be foldable with reference to the seat, this device last named being capable of swinging outwardly to an inoperative position, so far as its use as a supporting element is concerned, but tion a table and also a the child from passing closure formed between chair, the back and the work, when in the position Vith the foregoing and View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
igure 1 is a perspective view of a folding chair constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the chair folded.
Fig. 3 is folded, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on a plane extending vertically and centrally through the chair as shown in Fig. 1.
eferring to the drawing in detail, the seat portion of the chair is designated 10, and is directly mounted on a suitable supbarrier, preventing from a small inthe arms of the aforesaid frame indicated. other objects in a top plan view of the chair constituting in that posi-y port, including the side members 11 and the front and rear elements 12 and 13 havin downwardly depending leg portions 14. The back is shown at 15, the upper portions of the arms are each designated 16, and the vertical portions thereof are shown at 17. Pivotally connected with the back, above the arms are bars 18 and 19 connected by a transverse tray member 20.
The base portion includes a substantially flat base member 21 supported upon legs 22, and the latter are provided with casters 28. r he sections of the chairs are hinged together at 221. Extending upwardly from the base are ` corner frame members 25, 26, 27 and 28, suitably braced as shown at 29. The upper kportion of this frame or supporting structure includes a rear transverse element 30, and a transverse bar 31 is connected with the element 30 and is provided l with casters 32, in order that the supporting frame may rest on the iioor and be readily movable with the chair per se, when the device is in a folded or collapsed position, as shown in Fig. 2. Th
secured to the Vrear elements 14, and is also provided with casters which rest on the floor, when the chair is in the position shown in this view.
A foot rest is provided, and includes the lower portion 35 and an inclined element 36. This foot rest if permanently mounted, as shown, will maintain its position when the chair is folded, the lower frame or base, hinged to the member 12, swinging with reference to the seat portion and foot rest, and assuming the collapsed position.
The frame portion comprising the elements 18, 19 and 20, may be used as a tray supporting device, and also aids in preventing the child from moving from his seat when the chair base, in reversed position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, will serve not only as a barrier, but
also as a table on which toys may be placed.
ther uses are readily apparent.
Having thus described the invention, what claim is 1. A chair having a seat section, a base section for the seat section movable relatively thereto for disposition in front thereof, and an elongated upstanding foot rest e transverse bar 33 is sov on the seat section to serve as a barrier to prevent a obild leaving the seat section.
A chair having a seat section, a base section o the seat section movable rela,- tively thereto for disposition in front thereof, an elongated upstanding foot rest on the seat section to serve as a bafriei to prevent a child leaving the seat section, and said foot rest member extending above the seat of the seat section.
in testimony whereof I ztiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
` JOHN GROOMS.
