, T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY APGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Bridge, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow- Points, of which the following is a specification.
The efficiency of a plow share depends largely on the ability of its cutting edge or point to withstand abrasive action and heavy shocks or blows.
After considerable experimentation, I have discovered that alloy steel, particularly manganese steel, following the requirements of my invention, owing to its inherent toughness and ability to resist abrasive wear and shock, is admirably qualified for use as a plow point or like implement.
In practising the invention, the implement is cast from a batch of manganese or other alloy steel and in order to insure that the ultimate point or cutting edge shall have substantially the same qualities of toughness and. high resistance to shock and abrasive wear possessed in such marked degree by the body, the point is formed excessively thick or with a bead or shoulder along the margin thereof. Hence, the margin is of smooth and regular or uniform contour and of rugged appearance. The excess metal is then removed by grinding to provide the usual point. Manifestly, there is thus provided a point characterized by extreme toughness and high resistance to shock and abrasive wear, and it is further manifest that these qualities are obtained without impairing in any way the strength of the body.

The provision of a bead or shoulder isvery important because manganese steel cannot berun to thin section, and even if cast comparatively thin would not present a uniform edge, and would not be susceptible of proper he order to impart to it the shock and wear resisting properties which are characteristic of manganese steel. v
, Having described my invention, I claim shown as a plow 1. As an article of manufacture a blank for a plow share consisting of an alloy steel casting whereof the point has an excess of metal defined as a marginal head or extension.
2. The method of making a plow share of uniform toughness and ability to resist shock and abrasive wear throughout the point and body, which consists in casting a blank of lloy steel with a point having an excess of metal defined as a marginal head or extension which is ultimately removed without infringing upon the body.
