Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29,1921.
Application filed December 19, 1919. Serial No. 346,097.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, Jenn A. Grusrus, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to latches and refers more particularly to latches adapted for use upon refrigerators and the like. One object of the invention is to provide a construction which has a locking bolt movable transversely of the swinging edge of the door and a lever for moving the locking bolt inward and swinging the door outward to open the same. Another object is the arrangement of parts such that the lever has a handle near the swinging edge of the door. A further object is the provision of a construction which is adapted to be used at either the right or left hand edges of a door. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door with the latch embodying my invention applied;
Fig. 2 is a section through the door, showing the latch in top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the latch in end view;
Figs. 4, 5 audit are respectively views similar to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, but showing a modified construction.
1 is the door which is hinged as at 2. 3 is a triangular shaped plate secured to the outer side of the door 1 near its swinging edge 4;. 5 is a locking bolt extending transversely of the swinging edge of the door and provided at its outer end with the roller 6 whereby the outer end of the locking bolt will more readily move over the cam surfaces 7 of the catch 8 when the locking bolt is being moved to locking position. 9 is a guide secured against the plate 3 and having the horizontally extending slot 10, through which passes the stem 11 of thelocking bolt 5. 12 is a guide secured to the plate 3 and engageable in the horizontal slot 13 in the locking bolt 5, this guide limiting the inward movement of the locking bolt.
14 is a lug upon the stem 11 of the locking bolt and adapted to slidably engage between the furcations 15 upon the guide 9, The lug provided with the upwardly extending arm 18, the upper end of which slidably engages in the aperture 19 in the inner end. of the stem 11 of the locking bolt. The outer end of the lever is spacedfrom the door to form the handle 20, which is near the swinging edge of the door. The guide 9 is provided with the downwardly extending projection 21 which is adapted to overlap and to be engaged by the lever 17 when the latter is operated to move the locking bolt 5 longitudinally inward and to swing the door outward. Due to the fact that the handle 20 of the lever is located near the swinging edge of the door greater leverage for opening of the door is afforded so that less power is necessary to open the door.
The lever 17 has the second downwardly extending arm 22 symmetrically arranged with respect to the arm 18 and the guide 9 also has an upwardly extending projection 23 symmetrically arranged with respect to the projection 21. The plate 3 is also symmetrically arranged. Due to this arrangement the latch is adaptedto be used upon either the right or left hand edges of the door by simply inverting the parts.
24: is a plate secured upon the inner side of the door and around the bolt 25 which is non-rotatably secured to the lever 17. 26 is a lever upon the inside of the door, which. is suitably non-rotatably secured to the bolt 25 and has its handle 27 extending outwardly toward the swinging edge of the door.
In operation, assuming the parts to be in closed position as shown in dotted lines in.
Figs. 1 and 2, when the handle 20 of the lever 17 is inclined downwardly from its pivotand the locking bolt 5 is in engagement with the catch 8. To open the door the handle of the lever is raised, which thereby longitudinally moves the locking bolt inward through the upwardly extending arm 18 engaging in the aperture 19 in the stem 11 of the locking bolt until the guide 12 limits this inward movement. /Vhen this occurs the lever 17 extends beneath the projection 21 upon the guide 9 so that upon outward pulling of the handle the lever engages the projection and thereby transmits the pulling force to the'door. Due to the fact that the handle is near the swinging edge of the door greater leverage is provided so that it is possible to open the door with but one hand. To close the door it is simply necessary to swing the door inward when the roller 6 upon the locking bolt 5 rides over the cam surface of the catch 8 thereby moving the locking bolt 5 inward and raising the handle of the lever 17 until the roller 6 reaches the recess in the catch, when the lever 17 will swing downwardly, due to gravity, and move the locking bolt outwardly.
In the modification as shown in Figs. 4, 5 andG, 28 is the plate over which the locking bolt 29 slides. This plate has the integral laterally extending projections 30 and 31 having. alined apertures 32 for engagement with the locking bolt for the purpose of guiding the same. The projection 30 which is nearest the swinging edge of the door has the furcations 33 between which the laterally-extending lug 34: upon the locking bolt is slidable. A suitable lock may be engaged in the aperture in this lug when the locking bolt is in extended position, so that the ends of the furcations will engage the lock to limit the retracting movement of the bolt. The other projection, 31, has at its upper and lower ends the extensions 35 which are spaced from the plate for engagement with the lever 36 for moving the locking bolt and opening the door. This lever is pivoted upon the plate, the latter having "the lateral extensions 37 through which the pivots extend. The arrangement of the plate with its projections and extensions is symmetrical on opposite sides of the horidoor.
zontal line passing through its center so that the construction is adapted to be used at either theright or left hand edges of the What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a hinged door, of a bolt at the swinging edge of said door and extending transversely thereof, a lever pivoted at its inner end upon said door and having an upwardly extending arm connected to said bolt to move the same longitudinally, and a handle at its outer end, said lever normally retaining said bolt in its outer position, and a guide for said bolt provided with a projection adapted to overlap said lever and to be engagedthereby when the same is actuated to move said bolt inwardly and to move said door outwardly,
at its inner end upon said door and connected to said bolt to actuate the same, said lever having a handle at its outer end and normally retaining said bolt in its outer position, means for guiding said bolt and limiting the inward movement thereof, and a second means for guiding said bolt provided with a projection adapted to overlap said lever and to be engaged thereby when the same is actuated to move said bolt longitudinally inward and to move said door outward.
