BROOK-HOLDER.
Application filed larch 15, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to devices for holding brooms and has for an object the provision of simple and efficient means, whereby a broom may be hung or supported when not 1n use.
Another object is the provision of a device of the above character in which the broom engaging member may be formed from a single length of wire and arranged in a manner to readily grip or release the broom.
Another object is the provision of a broom holder which includes a plate or attaching member, to which the broom attaching member may be pivotally secured by means of which it may be supported in position.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of invention showing the broom engaging member in ripping position and a broom handle by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the device in releasing position.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the parts in the position shown in Fin". 1.
Fig. i is a top plan view or the same.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through the attaching plate and showing the manner of "forming the bearings for the pivot arms.
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a modified form of invention.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same.
Fi 8 is a vertical sectional view similar to F 1g. 5 but showing a difierent "form of bearin for the pivot arms.
Referring in detail to the drawings,
wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive comprises a base or attaching plate 10, upon which is pivotally mounted the broom engaging memher which is designated in its entirety by the reference character 11.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22,1921.
Serial in. 452,577.
The attaching plate 10 is preferably formed from a single piece of material and has its marginal edges bent over to provide flanges 12, which engage the surface of the support upon which the device is secured. The base or attaching plate 10 is provided with openings 13 for the passage of screws or similar fastening devices, the surrounding portions of the openings 13 being bent inwardly to provide counter sinks for the screw heads.
The broom engaging member 11 is pivotally secured to the base or attaching plate 10 and to provide for this, the said base or attaching plate carries spaced bearings 1 1. These bearings are formed by cutting or slitting the bottom portion of the plate so as to provide tongues which are bent into substantially cylindrical formation, the said tongues being formed by the material removed from the openings 15.
The broom engaging member 11 is preferably formed from a single length of wire, being bent intermediate its ends to provide a handle receiving loop 16, from which extends substantially parallel arms 17 The arms 17 provide means for spacing the loop from the base or attaching plate 10. Extending from each of the arms 17 in opposite directions are alined pivot arms 18, the latter being received within and passing through the bearings 14. One of the arms 18 is extended'to provide a stop 19 which is so positioned with respect to the loop 16, that when the said stop engages the face of the base or attaching plate 10, the said loop will be disposed at a downward inclination. The other arm 18 is provided with an extension so as to form an operating arm or handle 20, which terminates in an eye 21. This handle also contacts with the face of the base or attaching plate 10 when the loop 16 is in gripping position, but it is primarily intended to aii'ord means for moving the loop upward upon the pivot arms 18 so as to release the handle of the broom.
In the use of the invention, the broom handle is inserted upward through the loop 16 and when released the said loop will engage the periphery of the handle due to the inclined position of the said loop. H desired the loop may be provided with a sleeve 22 of rubber or similar material so as to provide an additional gripping surface. By means of the arm 20, the loop may be moved upwardly so as to arrange the loop substantially at right angles withrespect to the handle of the room, whereupon the latter will be released.
Various changes may be made in the form, construction and minor details of the invention and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims. For example, the loop may have its inner ends joined by means of a connecting member 23, while the operating arm 24 may be ofiset from the face of the base or attaching plate 10. In addition, bearing eyes 25 may be substituted for the sleeves 14;. These eyes may be formed of ordinary cotter pins, the-legs of which are inserted through openings 26 in the base or attaching plate 10', as indicated at 27.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A broom hanger comprising an attaching plate, a broom engaging member pivotally secured thereon, said member being formed from a single strand of wire and bent to provide a downwardly inclined broom handle engaging loop, pivot arms extendin forme by an extension of one of the p1vot arms and an operating arm formed by an extension of the other pivot arm and means carried by the attaching member for receiving the pivot arms, whereby the broom engaging member is pivotally secured to the base.
2. A broom hanger comprising an attaching plate, a broom engaging member pivotally secured thereon, said member being formed from a single strand of wire and bent to provide a downwardly inclined broom handle engaging loop, pivot arms extending from one end of the loop, a combined stop and operating arm formed by an extension of one of the pivot arms and engageable with the attaching plates and sleeves formed by cutting the attaching plate and bending the material into substantially cylindrical form to receive the pivot arms, whereby the loop may be moved in a direction to release the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM H. COLLINS.
