Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN SONTOW, 0F WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed July 8,
T o all whom it may concer/n Be it known that I, HERMAN SoN'row, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, and a resident of II/Iilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices; and I do hereby dec-lare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locking devices and more particularly to such as employ a plurality of bolts or locking members for doors or other hinged or otherwise movable structures,-one object of the invention being to provide simple and etlicient means for projecting or withdrawing two locking bars simultaneously in opposite directions and at the same time operating a latch to project or withdraw the same in a direction at right angles to the path of movement of the locking bars, and to provide simple and efhcient key-operated means for locking said bars and latch when projected, against movement in a direction to withdraw them.
IVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts' as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view illustrating an embodiment of my invention, with the locking bars and latch withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the locking bars and latch projected. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a separate view of the lock bolt. Fig. 5 is a separate view of the keeper for the latch, and Fig. 6 is a separate view of the escutcheon.
1 represents a portion of a door or other movable structure with which my improvements are connected. The part 1 is mortised or recessed for the reception of a casing 2 to which a :tace plate 3 is secured, the latter being adapted to be fastened to one edge of the part 1 and is provided with a slot for the passage of a latch 4. A spindle 5 is mounted in the casing 2 and to one end of this spindle (behind the casing 2) the latch 4: is secured so that when the spindle is turned in one direction said latch will be projected through the face plate 3 so that Specification of Letters Patent.

end of this slot which said latch first enters may be somewhat widened as indicated at 8 so as to provide a beveled edge 8a to be engaged by the latch and thus the door will be made to fit tightly against the door frame. The latch 4 is segmental in form and has a straight edge 9 which, when the latch is wlthdrawn lies flush with the face-plate 3 and fills the slot in the latter.
-The spindle 5 carries a pinion 10 to mesh with racks 11 and 12 at the inner ends of lock-bars 13 and 14. These lock-bars are mounted to slide in grooves 15 in the part p 1 and are of suflicient length to extend beyond respective ends of said part 1 when pro]ected and to engage suitable keepers. To facilitate the engagement of the rackbars with their keepers, said bars may be rounded or beveled at their free ends. `The locking-bar 13 is straight from end to end and its rack is located at one side of the pinion, while the rack portion of the other rack-bar is offset as at 16 so as to be disposed at the other side of the pinion.
A locking bolt 17 is mounted in one end of the casing 2 and is adapted to slide transversely therein,-said bolt being provided with an elongated slot 18 to receive a guide lug 19 rigid with the casing. A portion of this bolt is movable under the locking bar 13 and the latter is made with a recess 2O for the accommodation of' said bolt, the said recess being sufiieiently long to permit of the movement of the locking bar 13, when the locking bolt is in its unlocking position as shown in Fig. 1. One end of the bolt 17 is provided with a finger 21 to aline with the inner end of the rack on the locking-bar 14 when the locking bars and the latch are projected, thus effectually locking these parts against withdrawal. The casing 2 is provided with a key-post 22 for the reception of a key and the bolt is made with shoulders 23-24 for cooperation with the bittings of the key so that when the key is turned in one direction the bolt will be moved transversely of the casing and into alinement with the end of the rack of the locking bar 14 to lock the locking-bars and latch in projected positions as previously explained, and so that when said key is turned in the other direction the locking i bolt will be moved out of alinement with said rack and both of the locking-bars and the latch will be free to be projected simultaneously when the spindle 5 is turned with the use of a suitable knob thereon. lThe casing 2 is provided therein with tubular internally threaded posts 25 for the reception of screws which secure the coverV plate- 26 to the casing. This cover plate has se. cured to its inner face a spring-,linger 27 which bears against the locking-bolt 17 toA Vprevent displacement thereof.
p ters-Patent, Vis
1. In locking means of the character described, the combination of a spindle, a latch rigid therewith adapted to engage a keeper, a pinion carried by said spindle, longitudinally movable lock-bars provided with racks meshing with said pinion, and a key-oper ated bolt adapted to be moved into the path of movement of one of said locking-bars to` lock both of said connected locking bars and the latch in their locking positions.
2. In locking means of the character described, the combination with a casing, of a spindle carried thereby, a latch rigid with said spindle and adapted to engage a keeper,
a pinion on said spindle, two longitudinally The cover movable locking-bars provided with racks, the latter disposed in said casing at respective sides of said pinion, and a transversely movable key-0perated bolt mounted in said ycasing and having a part adapted to be moved to engage the inner end of one of the locking bars to lock both of said bars and the Vlatch in projected position.
3. In locking means of the character described, the combinationwith a casing provided with a cover plate, of a spindle carried by said casing and provided with a latch adapted to engage a keeper, longitudinally movable lockingbars, rack-and-pinion gearing between the spindle and said locking-bars, a key-operated bolt mounted to move transversely in said casing and having a part adapted to be moved into the path of movement of one of said locking bars for locking both locking-bars and` the latch in projected positions, and a member carried by the cover-plate of the casing and bearing against said Vlocking bolt to prevent dis-,
placement thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed this spec'ication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses'.
