T 0 all 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. DAVIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Kentland, in the county of Newton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved drain which when placed at the end of furrows or gullies will prevent the washing of soil therefrom and the consequent deteriorating of the land for the purposes of cultivation, etc.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a drain of the above character which will at the same time allow a free flow of water therethrough irrespective of the accumulation of soil about the inlet openings.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drain which includes a series of vertically spaced inlet openings to receive the water from the furrow or gully and wherein the said openings are so arranged whereby water flowing in the upper one will not flow back through either of the lower ones.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character that is simple in construction, strong and durable and which it is believed may be manufactured at a reasonably low cost.
Various other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.

In reducing my invention to practice I first provide an upright tubular structure 10 which has an angular outlet or mouth portion at its lower end and which is designated by the numeral 11. The angle at which the outlet or mouth portion 11 extends with respect to the tubular member 10 is not mate rial, this being left to the discretion of the manufacturer as based upon practical applie i e Specification of Letters Patent.

The intake pipes 12, 13 and 141 are arranged in vertically spaced relation on the front side of the tubular member 10 and extend therefrom at a substantially 60 degree angle as clearly shown in Fig. 1 for the purpose that will presently appear. The pipes may be cast integral with the tubular member 10 or may be arranged in detachable relation thereto as occasion may require.
I also provide suitable caps or covers 15 of screen material such as wire mesh or the like, for the extreme outer ends of the pipes 12, 13 and let so as to prevent foreign matter from passing into the tubular member 10 such as would cause clogging or the stopping up of the outlet 11. y
In actual practice the drain may be embedded in a concrete base as shown at 16 at the end of a furrow or gully with the open ends of the pipes 12, 13 and 14 facing into the furrow or gully so that water may pass therefrom into the tubular member 10 and outwardly through the outlet 11. The accumulation of soil and other sediment will at first accumulate below the mouth of the pipe 12 but will gradually rise and finally stop up the same entirely. The water will then seek a higher level and pass into the tubular member 10 through the pipe 13. Because of the angular connection of the pipe 12 to the tubular member 10 water flowing into the tubular member through either of the pipes 13 or 14 will not force its way back through the pipe 12 but will seek a lower level and pass outwardly through the outlet 11.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the drain I provide will efl'ectuallyprevent the wasting and carrying away of soil and at the same time permit the water to pass freely therethrough and be carried away.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising an upright tubular body portion, a substantially horizontal outlet portion arranged at the lower end of said body portion, a plurality of intake pipes arranged in vertically spaced relation and open to the interior of said body portion, and said intake pipes extending from said body portion at an angle greater than 4-5 degrees substantially as described.
