UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAMP.
Application filed August 5, 1920.
T 0 (die/17mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX A. DOELCKNER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Clamps; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is an end view of the invention as applied.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention in engagement with the pulley ropes.
Fig. a is a perspective view of the invention alone.
The invention has relation to means for preventing the fall of objects suspended by block andtackle devices, and particularly of ladders upon which painters or other workmen are supported, such fall being occasioned by the breaking of one of the suspension ropes, and resulting frequently in serious in ury.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the upper and 2 the lower of the pulley blocks, there being upper and lower pulley blocks at each end of the ladder, and one continuous rope for each set of blocks, said rope being fastened at one end to the upper block and passed downwardly around a pulley of the lower block, and thence upwardly around a pulley of the upper block three times, to form three coils 3, 4-, and 5, in the tackle illustrated, which is the common form, the loose end of the rope being utilized to hoist the ladder at each end thereof.
The loose end of the rope being then grasped by the workman and pulled, will move the three coils 8, 4, and 5 at different rates of speed, and it is the design of applicant to take advantage of the different rate of speed of the stretches of the three coils to attain the result stated. To accomplish this, a clamp device 6 is adapted to engage a stretch of each of the three coils at, 5, and 6,

sothat they will be held securely together, said device consisting preferably of pivoted aws 7 and 8, the pivot thereof being shown at 9, and aclamp lever 10, being pivoted at 11 to the end of the jaw 7 opposite the pivotal end thereof and having an eccentric pivotal connection 12 with a link 13, said link at its oppos1te end having pivotal connection at 14, with the adjacent end of the other jaw 8. In this way, as the lever is opened or operated in one direction, the jaws will be forced apart; and as the lever is operated reversely the jaws will be forced together to clamp the rope, and the pivot 11 will be moved past and out of line with the two pivots l2 and 14, whereby any strain upon the rope calculated to force the clamp jaws apart, will have the effect of forcing the aws closer together, if possible, to more firmly gras the rope.
It is pre erred that the clamp device shall be connected to one of the pulley blocks at 15, so that it will be always at hand when needed.
Should any of the stretches of the coils 3, at, or 5 break, the movement set up for the stretches at different rates of speed will cause a twist of the clamp device, and any effectual movement of the rope will be prevented and the ladder will remain securely in position as adjusted.
The jaws 7 and 8 are preferably provided with teeth, between which are recesses 16 for the rope stretches.
I claim A clamp for the purpose described, consisting of two jaws pivoted together at one end thereof, a clamp lever pivoted at one end to the non-pivotal end of one of said jaws, and a link having at one end a pivotal connection with said lever eccentric of the and lever connection, and at its other end a pivotal connection with the adjacent end of the other jaw, so adapted that when the jaws are forced together by said lever, any movement of the jaws tending to open the same will tend to force the jaws closer together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
