EGG-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. Srrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Carriers of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in egg carriers, and particularly to a new and improved filler therefor of a construction designed to provide a plurality of resilient egg receiving pockets or cells.
Among the objects of the present invention are to provide a filler of the character specified preferably made of two pieces of cardboard or similar material, and having inclined yielding bottom portions; a filler capable of being collapsed for shipping purposes and readily assembled with the casing or carton now so generally employed for containing eggs.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate applications of my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an egg carrier embodying my invention, having a portion of the cover broken away;
Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view;
Fig. 3, a cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4C, a cross sectional view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modified form of construction; and
Fig. 5, a plan view showing a portion of a blank from which one of the filler members is formed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a rectangular box or carton designed to receive the filler structure, said box or carton being provided with a cover portion 2.
The filler, as illustrated and as preferred, includes a member having longitudinally extending bottom portions 3 and 1, and a longitudinally extending partition wall 5, said partition wall being formed of two thicknesses of cardboard or other suitable material and provided with a plurality of vertically extending slots 6 and a plurality of notches 7 In the form of Fig. 1, as particularly shown by Fig. 3, the said member includes, in addition to the portions mentioned, vertically extending side wall portions 8 and 9. It is sometimes desirable to omit the side wall portions 8 and 9, or one of them, such a construction being shown in the modified form of Fig. 4. In this form, the side wall 9 is omitted.
The second member of the filler structure is preferably made from a single blank cut and scored as shown by Fig. 5. As shown, said blank is formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots 10 and a plurality of extensions 11. The blank is cored as indicated by the lines 12, thereby permitting it to be bent into the form particularly shown by Fig. 2. Said second member, when bent as illustrated, includes a plurality of vertically and transversely extending por tions 13 and 14, and inclined bottom portions 15 joining the said vertical portions 13 and 1 1. It will be noted in Fig. 2 that alternate vertically folded portions are of less height than the other vertically folded portions, although the tops of all of said portions are at the same level.
In assembling the two members, it will be understood that the slots 10 of the second member will enable the said member to be readily applied to the partition wall 4: of the first member. In other words, the second member straddles the wall 5 and the members are interlocked by reason of portions of the second member being entered in the slots 6 and the notches 7 of the first member. When thus assembled, each side of the double wall 5 enters into the formation of a pocket or cell, the cell being completed by the portions 13, 14 and 15 of the second member and the sides 8 and 9 or, if said side portions are omitted, by the side walls of the casing or carton 1.
The extensions 11, as particularly shown by Fig. 3, space the filler structure slightly away from the side walls of the casing.
What I claim is:
1. In an egg carrier, the combination with an inclosing casing, ofa filler adapted to be positioned in the casing, said filler including a longitudinally extending member having a base portion and a central partition Wall, and a second member interlocked with the first member and cooperating therewith to form cells, said second member having a plurality of spaced apart vertically and transversely extending portions and inclined bottom portions connecting the said spaced apart transversely extending portions, and having a plurality of slots by means of which the second member may straddle said first member.
2. A filler for egg carriers comprising two interlocked members, one of said members constituting a central vertical partition wall, and the other member having a plurality of spaced apart vertically and transversely extending portions and inclined bottom portions connecting the said spaced apart transversely extending portions, and provided with narrow slots formed parallel with the central partition wall, said slots terminating below the tops of the vertically and transversely extending portion, whereby said slotted member is enabled to straddle said vertical partition.
3. A filler for egg carriers comprising a longitudinal partition and a separate continuous strip having spaced apart vertically folded portions arranged in such manner that some of the folded portions are longer than others of the folded portions, said strip having slots therein whereby it may be straddled over said partition, said slots being arranged so that the tops of said vertically extending portions are at the same level when the strip is straddled over the partition, whereby a slope is imparted to the portions of the continuous strip between the spaced apart vertically folded portions.
4. A filler for egg carriers comprising a longitudinal partition and a continuous strip straddling the longitudinal partition having spaced apart vertically folded portions, every alternate folded portion being shorter than the other vertically folded portions, the tops of the vertically folded portions all being at substantially the same level, whereby an inclination is given to the portions of the continuous strip between the folds.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
