SHEET-GAGE FOR ADDRESSING-MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST R. JUNG- LING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in SheetGages for Addressing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gage attachment for addressing machines, and has for its object to provide a device applicable to the well known forms of addressing machines, and adapted to aid in permitting the placing of names and addresses on a sheet of paper. By means of my improved attachment it is possible to place a number of names and addresses on substantially large sheets of paper, such as loose leaf sheets from address books or the like, with the names on one sheet corresponding in horizontal and vertical alinement with those on the other sheets, whereby a very neat and desirable appearance and arrangement of each page is provided.
lVith these objects, and other objects which may hereinafter appear in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more pan ticularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a well known form of addressing machine, showing the manner in which my improved sheet gage is applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the address plates;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the addressing machine, showing a portion of my improved sheet gage; and
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of my improved sheet gage.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, as disclosed in the accompanying drawing. 1 indicates an addressing machine of a well-known type, which is provided with a plate holder 2 adapted to hold a plurality of address plates 3. In this type of machine the plates 3 are successively carried below an inked ribbon 4. The sheet Specification of Letters Patent.

to be addressed is held over the ribbon and a low from a striker 5 causes the address to be imprinted on the sheet. The plates 3 thereafter successively pass to a supporting guide 6 from whence they are manually removed. The above shows a form of wellknown machine, but it will be understood that my appliance intended to be utilized on practically any type of addressing machine.
Situated next to. or secured to the machine 1 is a table 7, provided at its rear edge with a guide strip 8, on which is provided a scale of markings 9, said scale consisting of two forms of markings as 10 and 11.
Resting upon the table 7 and slidable thereon is a guide member 12 in the nature of a tlat plate provided with a projecting lug 13 forming a handle by which the slide 12 may be moved on its support 7.
At its rear edge the slide is provided with a scale consisting of spaced lines 10 and 11, and on its side edge adjacent the addressing machine, the slide is provided with a scale consisting of the spaced markings 14. The slide is also provided with a lat erally projecting sheet-supporting plate 15, which, when the sheet to be addressed is in a certain position, lies over the plate holder 6 and keeps the sheet from contacting with the plates 3 resting therein.
From the foregoing. the operation of my improved device will be readily understood.
A sheet to be addressed is placed with its edge abutting against the edge 16 of the slide 152, with the slide substantially in position as shown in Fig. 1, and the lower edge of the sheet in alinement with the mark 1 1 nearest to the operator. After one address is applied to the sheet, the same is slid forward until its lower edge is in alinement with the next marking 14, and so on until a line of addresses has been applied. on the sheet, one above the other. A new line of addresses is then begun by moving the slidable guide 12 on its support until the markings 10 or 11- are in alinement with similar markings 10 or 11 on the table. By following the arrangement above set forth. the names and addresses on each sheet are similarly disposed in vertical and horizontal alinement.
It Will be understood that the forms of scale markings may be varied to suit difgage ferently sized sheets or the manner in which it is desired to place the names and ad dresses thereon. In the particular arrangement disclosed herein, the markings 11 and '11 indicate the starting position of a sheet having marginal holes such are usually found in loose leaf sheets, whereby the names and addresses placed on these sheets are so positioned that they do not encroach upon that portion of the sheet utilized when a number oi the sheets are bound in their cover.
From the foregoing it is obvious that my inventionis not to be restricted to the exact embodiment shown, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming Within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim is l. A device of the class described comprising a support having a scale, a slidable gage member movable on said support, said member having an abutment for a sheet and a scale on said abutment.
2. A device of the class described comprising a support, a scale thereon, a gage member movable on said support, said gage member having scale markings adapted to be brought into alinement with the scale on the support, an abutment for a sheet on sald support and spaced scale markings on said support adjacent said abutment.
3. A device of the class described comprising means for supporting a sheet to be addressed, a guide for indicating the positions of said sheet when moved in one direction, and a scale on said guide for spacing names and addresses in an opposite direction. v

A device 01"" the class described comprising a guide for addressing machines comprising a movable member having an edge forming an abutment for a sheet, said edge having a plurality of spaced apart markings, a diagonally opposite edge having a plurality of markings, a support for said movable member and a scale thereon having markings adapted to be brought into registration ivith the markings on one edge of the movable member.

3. In a device or" the class described a support iaving a scale, a slidable gage member movable on said support, said gage member having means cooperating with the scale to indicate various positions at which the gage member is brought to rest, said gage member having an abutment for a sheet to be addressed and a scale on said abutment.
