  • My invention relates to anchoring devices for tiles employed for facing-slabs for the interior orexterior of buildings, dwellings and the like, which are adapted to be se cured to W00den,plastered or other surfaces and particularly ofwalls, and, broadly considered, the object of my invention is, while retainingthe adhesive surface of the tile, to increase its fastening efficiency by providing it with a special type of anchoring device, permanently secured. or embedded within its own rear surface, and adapted to be secured within the surface to which the tile is to be applied; to the end that, after its application, the tile may be more permanently aflixed than by other and kindred devices now in use.

TILE-ANCHORING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N V. 15, 1921.
Application filed September 3, 1919. Serial No. 321,300.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN B. LANCASTER,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tile-Anchoring Device, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to anchoring devices for tiles employed for facing-slabs for the interior orexterior of buildings, dwellings and the like, which are adapted to be se cured to W00den,plastered or other surfaces and particularly ofwalls, and, broadly considered, the object of my invention is, while retainingthe adhesive surface of the tile, to increase its fastening efficiency by providing it with a special type of anchoring device, permanently secured. or embedded within its own rear surface, and adapted to be secured within the surface to which the tile is to be applied; to the end that, after its application, the tile may be more permanently aflixed than by other and kindred devices now in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my inventioncomprehends the typical constructions of anchoring devices and their adjuncts applied to tiles, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which dis close preferred embodiments of them, as
will be hereinafter described.
I For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limitedto the precise arrangement andorganization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as defined in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of a tile, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of the tile represented in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary, perspective view of the embodiments represented in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 represents a rear elevation of a tile similarly embodying my invention in which, however, the anchoring devices occupy a reversed position with regard to the rear surface of the tile to that which the same devices occupy when applied to the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, Qand 3. Fig. 5 represents an end elevation of Fig. 4., and I l Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary, perspective view of the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. i

Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings.-1 designates my novel construction of tile formed with a front face 2 and a rear or back face 3. In the upper portion of the foregoing figures, I have shown my novel anchoring devices as composed of U-shaped or peculiarly bent members 4 each of which. comprises a longitudinal, inner member 7,-limbs 6, extending angularly with respect to said member,and externally terminating in outwardly and oppositely deflected terminals 5.
In this construction, I have illustrated a plurality of four anchoring devices arranged or embedded in the upper portion of the tile at equal distances from each other and projecting partly out from its rear face, aswill be understood from said Figs. 1, 2 and 3.-
In the lower portion of the tile as shown in said Figs. 1, 2 and 3,-I have illustrated a corresponding row of similar anchoring devices connected. by an integral, transverse bar or rod 8, the construction of which will be readily understood, particularly from the lower right-hand portion of Fig. l
In Figs. 4, 5 and (i. I have shown the same construction of anchoringdevices as in. the first three figures, but reversely embedded in the tile 1,-the upper portion of Fig. 4, illustrating a row of said anchoring devlces 4, having their terminals 5 and part apparent that, although the anchoring devices of the first three figures and those of Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are in themselves of similar constructions, they are relatively so reversely applied to the back face of the body of the tile,-that in the first three figures the inner member 7 is wholly within the bod of the tile and the limbs'pa'rtly within-it, w ile the outwardly deflected terminals are entirely external to the rear'face of the tile and adapted to be engaged within the holding face of thesurface of plaster, mortar or cement towhich the tile is applied.
It will also be observed that in this construction the transverse bar seen at the lower portion of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is wholly embedded within the body of the tile.
In the construction of Figs. l to 6, however, theseanchoring devices are, in their 15 application to the rear face of the tile, completely reversed, so that the members 7 protrude beyond the rear surface of the tile, the limbsare partly outside of said rear face, and the outwardly deflected terminals are wholly within the body of the tile.
1' This is alsotrue of the transverse bar 8 which in this embodiment is external to the rear face of the tile, as seen at the bottom of Figsfl, 5 and 6.
In either construction, however, as is ob vious, such portions of the anchoring device as -protr ude orextendbeyond the rear surface .of the tile are theportions which effectthe connection between the rear surface of the tile itself and thesurface upon and to I which it is applied andsecured.
' As the surface to'which the tile is applied Y is inherently more or less plastic, the attachment of the tile to the desired point is effectively and expeditiously accomplished and the. essence of my invention resides in the formation of the anchoring device itself and in its application to-the rear surface of the tile, when the latter is in a plastic condition, so that it is permanently affixed to said tile during the baking or finishing operations thereof, whereby, the tile with its affixed "anchoringdevice canibe readily applied to the desired point. The anchoring devices can be applied'to or cast or embedded in the tile body at any suitable stage in its manufacture and. while saidbody. is in a plastic condition, as willbe apparent to those skilled in the art.
It will now be apparent that I have'devisedanovelanduseful construction of tile anchoring device which embodies the fea- .tures of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statementof the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same issusccptible of modification in various particulars within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. I
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is 2- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a tile having castin the body thereof a plurality projecting anchoring devices, each comprising a single longitudinal member embedded in said body, two li.mbs angularly disposedwith reference to said longitudinal member and having their outer portions projecting from said body, and two terminals outwardly deflected from said limbs.
As a new article of manufacture, a tile having embedded in its body a plurality of anchoring devices, each comprising a single longitudinal member, two limbs angularly disposed with reference tosaid longitudinal member, two terminals outwardly deflected from said limbs, and a transverse bar connected to the longitudinal members of said anchoring device, said bar anda portion of said limbs being-embedded in said body, the outer'portion of said limbs projecting from said body and said terminals being also located outside of said body.
3. -As a new article of manufacture, a tile having embedded in a portion thereof a plurality ofanchoring devices, which comprise asingle longitudinal memberembedded in. said body, two limbs angularly disposed with reference to saidlongitudinal member and having their outer portions projecting from said body, and two terminals outwardly deflected from said limbs, said body also having cast therein a transverse bar having a plurality of longitudinal members connected thereto, each of said longitudinal members being embedded in said body and provided with two limbs deflected outwardly therefrom, the outer portions of said limbs projecting from said body and each of said limbs having outwardly deflected terminals.
