Description

'n. F. HEATH. COMBINED REFRIGERATOR AND ICE CREAM FREEZER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 8|1920.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
UNITED DELOS P. HEATH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED REFRIGERATOR AND ICE-CREAM FREEZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Application filed September 8, 1920. Serial No. 408,847.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dams P. HEATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of I'Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Refrigerators and Ice-Cream Freezers, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to a combination of refrigerator and ice cream freezer and has for its object to provide such a device with a unitary motive power.
Another object of the invention is to modify the ordinary domestic refrigerator so that the same may be readily used for making ice cream from time to time as desired and in which the ice cream freezer may be removed when required so as to use the compartment for ordinary refrigerating purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device with means for readily disconnecting the shaft of the ice cream freezer in order that the latter may be removed.
With the above general objects in view and some others, which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the description hereinafter, my invention consists in the features, details of construction and combinations of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawin s and then particularly pointed out.
n the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the assembled device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail.
The numeral 1 designates as a whole the ordinary domestic refrigerator although the invention may be applied as well to other types of refrigerators. The refrigerator which is illustrated in the drawing has the usual number of compartments, the compare ment used for freezing purposes being shown in detail and designated by the numeral 2.
In the compartment 2 is located the brine tan1k'3 in which is housed the expansion coi 4.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the brine tank is U-shaped in cross section thereby providing a lateral passageway or pocket whereby the freezer or ice trays may be inserted and removed. In this passageway is provided a number of inwardly directed flanges 17 for receiv1ng ice trays hen the refrigerator is to be used for this purpose.
Suitably arranged on the top of the refrlgerator is the electric motor 5, compressor 3 and condenser coil 7 The compressor is operated by motor 5 through the belting 8. The valve through which the refrigerant is expanded is positioned inside the freezing compartment as shown at 9.
A thermostatic switch 10 is placed in the motor circuit andhas for its purpose to keep the temperature of the freezing compartment within certain prescribed limits.
Fixed on the main shaft of the motor 5 is the beveled gear 11 which is shown in mesh with the beveled gear 12. This latter gear is secured to the vertical shaft 13. The shaft 13 is rotatably and slidably mounted in bearing 14 and is provided at its lower end with a squared socket 15. The purpose of the socket 15 being to engage the squared end of the paddle shaft 16 of the ordinary ice cream freezer when it is desired to operate same;
To disconnect the vertical shaft 13 from the motor shaft and also from the paddle shaft 16, I provide the bell-crank 18 which is shown pivoted to the top wall of the compartment as at 19. On the end of the bell crank opposite from the handle is a laterally projecting pin 20 which rides in the annular groove 21 provided on the shaft 13. Pivotally attached to a wall of the compartment is the finger 22, the purpose of which is to hold the vertical shaft 13 in elevated position when desired.
In operation, the brine tank is filled and a suitable refrigerant such as sulfur dioxid placed in the coils. This refrigerant is compressed, cooled and expanded in the well known manner.
When it is desired to freeze ice cream, the freezer being charged with the mixture is placed in the passageway of the brine tank. The handle of the bell crank 18 is then moved upwardly thereby engaging socket 15 with the squared end of the paddle shaft and also placing gears 11 and 12 in mesh. The motor 5 is then started and the cream is frozen in a manner that will be readily understood.
A downward pull on the handle of the bell crank raises shaft 13 and disengages the bevel gears and also disengages the socket 15 from the paddle shaft 16. lhe freezer may then be removed from the compartment.
If it is now desired to manufacture ice, suitable pans, not shown, may be filled with water and supported on the flanges 17 and the same process carried out. It will, of course, be understood that, in this latter case, the gears 11 and 12 are disconnected.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described what I now believe to bathe best embodiment of the invention, but I do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself or the scope of the invention, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and all such I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is 1. A domestic refrigerator, a plurality of refrigerating compartments therein, means for cooling said compartments, said means including an expansion coil located in one of said compartments and so arranged as to provide a pocket, an ice cream freezer located in said pocket, and unitary means for operating the cooling means and the ice cream freezen' 2. A domestic refrigerator, a plurality of refrigerating compartments therein, means for cooling said compartments, said means including an expansion coil located in one of said compartments and so arranged as to provide a laterally open pocket, an ice cream freezer located in said pocket, a motor for operating the coollng means and the lee cream freezer, and means for disconnecting the ice cream freezer from the motor.
