WITNESS/58 /NVENTUR Br v W /lrz ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W m DUIIOBD, 0I BARTLHVILLI, OILLHOIA.
STRAP-WGH.
To all Iwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER DUrronD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bartlesville, in the county of Washington and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Strap-Wrench, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to wrenches for turning pipes, bars, or other round objects, and more particularly relates to a strap wrench, that is to say, a wrench em loying a flexible strap as the gripping me ium, whereby to revent marrlng of the work being turned. t is the practice in using wrenches of the indicated type to apply rosin or uivalent material to the strap to increase t e adhesion and the gripping action thereof.
An object is to constitute the hollow handle of the wrench a container for the rosin and to provide a plug for closing the forward end of the handle and formed with an opening through which the rosin may escape in desired quantity, and whereby when the handle is in position, the discharge orifice of the plug will be closed by the stra whereas with the removal of the handle rom the wrench head, the rosin may be readily applied to the strap surface.
More specifically, the invention has for an object to provide a discharge plug that may be readily and conveniently inserted, and generall to provide a construction of the wrench andle adapted for the ready cleaning of the 'plug and handle in the event the plug or handle becomes gummed by the rosin, the provision for the cleaning of the handle including a closure plug as hereinafter referred to for the rear end of the handle.
The invention furthermore has for an object to provide a member on the wrench forward of the front end of the handle against which the fastened end of the strap will be pressed for the effective closing of the discharge opening, said member also functioning in the absence of the handle for holding the strap against accidental detachment from the wrenc Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specilcation, it being understood that the drawing is merely illustrative of one example of the invention.

e wrench includes a head 10 which, in
accordance with the usual general form of such heads, curves laterally and forwardly at a side of a the wrench to present a concavit at one side of the wrench head near the ront end. Said head is formed with a transverse opening 11 through which one end of the stra A may be passed to terminate at the si e having the concavity, and is formed also with a pair of transverse openings 12, 12l rearward of opening 11, through which the opposite end of the strap A mary be passed for ldisposing the strap in loope form and-in gripping relation to the pipe or other similar piece of work B. The openings 11 and 12 are separated by a transverse member 13 and the openings 12 and 12'L are separated by a transverse partition 20, to be hereinafter further referred to, which advantageously projects at one side of the wrench slightly beyond the partition 13. The head 10 at the rear end terminates in an inte al socket or ferrule 14 internally threaderto receive the threaded forward end of the tubular handle 15.
The forward end of the handle is closed by a plug 17 having external threads 16 engaging corresponding threads at the interior of the handle 15. Said plug is cup-shaped at its inner end as at 18 and the forward end isV formed with an oblong discharge o ening 19. By making the opening 19 o long the proper amount of rosin ma be caused to escape from the handle wit out danger of a too free discharge on the one hand or avoiding an undue tendency of the opening to clo on the other hand, the rosin having a ten ency to gum. Moreover,
the oblong form of the opening adapts it to effectively receive a screw-driver or similar tool for turning the plug or to receive any convenient piece of wood or other improvised expedient. When the handle 15 1s in place 1n the socket 14, the front end of the plug 17 is pressed against that run of the strap A disposed transversely in the slot 12 in front of the handle. The closure of the discharge opening 19 when the wrench is in use, is assured by the provision of the transverse partition 20 extending across the line of the plug 17, so that said plug bears firmlyagainst the strap 'atthe rear surface and presses the strap firmly agalnst said partition 20,-so that the strap tightly Acloses said dischargeo ening 19, when the strap has been passe forwardly through the ,opening 12 then bent about the partltion 20 and returned through the o ening 12.
The removal of the plug 1 ermits of the plug being thoroughly oleane and the handle also. I
The cup formof the rear end of the plug 16 insures an ample supply of rosin to the discharge opening 19 while the latter determines the rapidity of outflow. At the same time the total effective length of the lug is such as to insure an ample threade engagement with the handle 15, in accordance with the known law that where a cylindrical element is inserted in another element, the former must have a length at least equal vto the diameter thereof to overcome tendency to tilt and bind.
vIn order to further facilitate the cleaning of the handle to remove any ummed rosm, the rear end of the handle 1s closed by a screw plug 21, the external threads of which engage internal threads within the handle, the said internal threads of the handle extending a distance so that the plug maybe screwed within the plane of the end of the handle to remain countersunk, whereby the plug will not protrude with a possibility of lts striking adjacent objects or be liable to injure the hands of the user by the protrusion. Moreover, the plugs may be embodied in a handle of ordinary standard size. The removal or either plug will permit of the rosin being entered in the handle.
The screw plug 21 is formed with an oblong slot or wide blind pocket 22 for receiving a screw-driver or similar tool for turning the plug or to receive any convenient piece of wood or other improvised expedient.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical dbtails herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my' invention, I claim: 1. A strap wrench including a head having a socket at the rear end thereof, a hollow handle detachably engageable with said socket and forming-a container adapted to v 'forward-end thereof a apted to be closed by pressure of the closure plug against said strap when the handle is in place, said opening affording an outlet for the rosin when the handle is detached from the head.
2. A strap wrench including a head having a socket open at its forward end, a hanv dle fitting at its forward end in said socket and a gripping strap, said head in front of the socket havin the assage of t e strap and a transverse -memlljner at the said transverse opening against which member the strap may be clamped by the handle.
3. A strap wrench having atubular detachable handle adapted to contain rosin for application to the strap, and removable plugs in both ends of the handle, and one of said plugs having a narrow oblong hole affording an outlet for the rosin when the handle is detached.
4. A strap wrench having a tubular detachable handle adapted to contain rosin, a screw plug closing the forward end of the handle and affording an opening for the discharge of the rosin when the handle is detached, anda screw plug closing the rear end of the handle and countersunk within the plane of the handle.
5. A strap wrench having a tubular detachable handle adapted to contain rosin, and a screw plug for closing an end of the handle, said plug having an oblong opening at its outer end for the outflow of the rosin andmade cup-shape at its inner end.
6. A strap wrench including a head having in the rear portion thereof a socket open at its forward end, a hollow container handle fitting at its forward end in said socket and having an opening at its forward end for 'the outfiow of its contents, and a gripping strap, `said head forward of the socket having a transverse opening for the passage of the strap and a' transverse member extending at the forward side of said opening a transverse opening for between which member and the handle the WALTER norman.
