DETACHABLE HANDLE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR NnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Falls, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to detachable handles, and more particularly to detachable handles for cooking utensils.
It is an object of the invention to provide a handle of this character that may be readily engaged and disengaged with any receptacle or pan.
It is another object of the invention to provide a handle of this character having a pair of jaws which are clamped to the receptacle by'the operator.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a handle of this character wherein the binding engagement of the jaws of the handle on the utensil or receptacle is increased according to the thickness and weight of the receptacle.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a handle of this character wherein it is impossible for the jaws of the handle to become accidentally disengaged from the receptacle, as they are held in engagementwith the receptacle by the pressure of the hand of the operator through the medium of the lever.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a handle of this character having a stationary jaw and a movable jaw, and a lever for controlling the movement of the movable jaw with respect to the stationary J lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described,

handle member which is substantially semicircular in cross section, the end portion 6 of the handle having its longitudinal edges cut awav as at 7 to permit the operator to obtain a firm hold upon the handle. The opposite end portion 8 of the handle is extended or curved outwardly to provide a stationary jaw 9, said-jaw being substantially-concavo-convex, the concave portion of the jaw being disposed adjacent the convex portion of the handle member 5. A ridge 10 is formed centrally of the jaw 9, to not only reinforce the same, but to substantially divide the work engaging face 11 to permit said face to firmly engage the work or object. A pair of ears 12 are struck from the handle member 5 at the junction of the jaw 9 with said handle member, said ears extending in the opposite direction to that of the jaw 9, and are disposed substantially in spaced parallel relation to each other, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
I11 connection with the stationary jaw, a movable jaw 13 is provided, said jaw consisting of a strip of material having its end portion 14 extended at right angles to the body portion of the strip as at 15, .and then in spaced parallel relation to said body portion as at 16, and back upon said body portion. The extremity of the portion 16 of the movable jaw is bifurcated as at 17, the arms of the bifurcation having their ends coiled to provide eyes 18. The opposite end portion of the strip or movable jaw is bent laterally to provide a convex work engaging face 19 which is disposed in confronting relation to the work engaging face 11 of the jaw 9, but is curved in the direction opposite to the curvature of the jaw 9. The ears 12 of the handle member 5 are adapted to be disposed between the eyes 18. A pintle 20 is passed through the eyes and ears to pivotally connect the movable jaw to the handle member.
In order to permit the movable jaw to be firmly engaged with a cooking utensil or receptacle, there is provided a novel form of cam lever 21 consisting of a strip of material which is bent laterally to substantially provide a reinforcing ridge 22 centrally and longitudinally of the strip. The end portion 23 of the strip is extended in angular relation to the main or body portion of the strip and has its extremity rounded as at 24. A bearing 25 is formed at the junction of the end portion 23 with the body portion of the lever by providing a pair of spaced slots 26, and extending the portion of the strip between the'slots beyond one surface of the lever and extending the portion of the lever on the opposite sides-of the slots be yond the face of the opposite side of the lever. In this way, a passage is formed. The lever 21 is adapted to be disposed within the semi-circular handle member 5 adjacent the ears 12, or in other words, so that the rounded portion 24 of the lever may engage the end wall of the bifurcation of the portion 16. The pintle 27 is passed through the handle member and the bearing 25 to pivotally connect the lever to the handle.
In use, when it is desired to lift a recep- .tacle not provided with a handle, the movable jaw 18 is positioned above the stationary jaw and is engaged by the thumb or finger of the operator so as to dispose the jaw in spaced relation to the stationary jaw 9. The handle is then engaged with a receptacle and the lever 21 depressed by the finger of the operator or moved inwardly of the handle member 5 so as to cause the rounded extremity 24 of the lever to engage the surface of the portion 16 of the movable jaw so as to firmly bind the movable jaw in engagement with the receptacle. The degree of pressure of the movable jaw is controlled entirely by the pressure of the operator on the lever 21 so that danger of accidental disengagement is prevented. To disengage the handle from the receptacle it is only necessary to move the lever outwardly with respect to the handle 5 so as to disengage the rounded end portion at from the movable aw, whereupon the handle may be readily removed from the receptacle.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of detachable handle capable of being readily applied to a receptacle and wherein the thickness or size of the receptacle does not interfere with its use as the curvature of the jaw 9 permits the device to be engaged with receptacles having walls of various thicknesses, while the curvature of the movable jaw permits said jaw to firmly engage handle for urging said movable jaw toward 7 the stationary aw.

A. handle 01 the character described comprising a handle member having a stationary jaw provided on one end, a movable jaw pivoted to the handle member adjacent the stationary jaw, and a cam lever pivoted to the handle between the handle and the movable jaw, said cam leverbeing arranged to engage the movable jaw to urge said movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.

A handle of the character described comprising a handle member having a sta tionary jaw on one end, a movable jaw, said movable jaw having one end portion thereoi extended back upon the body portion of said movable jaw and pivoted to the handle adjacent the stationary jaw, and a cam lever pivoted to the handle and adapted to engage the extended end portion of the movable jaw to urge said movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.
4. A detachable handle of the character described comprising a handle member, one end portion of said handle member being extended outwardly to provide a jaw, a inovablejawpivoted at one end to the handle member adjacent the stationary jaw, and a cam lever pivoted to the handle member and adapted to engage the pivoted end portion of the movable j awto urge said jaw toward 7 the stationary jaw.
