WyQdMJ/n mi PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL BUCHSBAUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. s, 19er.
Application led October 14, 1920. Serial No. 416,932.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL BUGHSBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain 'new and useful Improvement in Belt- Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to belt buckles and has for its object the provision of an improved buckle of the character indicated, which in its essentials is a modification of a buckle disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 416,931 tiled Oct. 14:, 1920, (Case #21), and of the structure disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,272,206, issued July 9, 1918.
In the aforesaid patent and in the said copending application I set forth a belt structure in which two separated gripping surfaces are disclosed which serve to grip the belt and hold it in position. f
In my present application I set forth a structure similar in many particulars to that disclosed in the said patent, but in which I am enabled to secure efficient gripping action by the use of one gripping surface.
I will explain my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view partly in section of the belt and buckle struct-ure;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section along line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the belt removed, a portion of the front plate being broken away to more clearly reveal features of construction; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the belt clamping element.
The belt buckle disclosed herein comprises a front plate 10 having side walls 11-11. These side walls carry a spindle 12 riveted in position as shown at 13. The spindle 12 carries a gripping element consisting of the side walls 1414 which are bridged by a single gripping bridge l5, which gripping bridge has a serrated surface, as clearly indicated. The gripping elementis pivotally mounted upon the spindle 12 through the agency of its side walls 14, the stem 12 being enlarged as shown at 17 by being pressed outwardly after the gripping element is mounted in place. The enlargements on the side walls 14. The plate 16 carries a clamp- 18 having the two legs 19 and 20, the leg 19 terminating in teeth 21 which clamp the belt tongue in position. against the plate 16` The clamp 18 is plvotally mounted in the side walls 22 of the clamping structure. The free belt tongue is adapted to be inserted backwardly of the front plate 10 and the gripping element. The gripping bridge 15, as shown more clearly in the drawings, grips the belt and forces it against the rear face of the front plate to thus hold it in position. The arrangement of the structure is such that the gripping bridge 15 cannot under any conditions be drawn beyond its dead center line relative to the spindle 12 and the front plate so that belts of any thickness within lrequired limits may be held in place.
By thus arranging the bridge 15 so that it cannot pass beyond the dead center when the belt is in place, I am enabled to obtain gripping action without the necessity of any additional gripping bridge. From what has been thus described the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art.
Having described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a front plate having side walls, a gripping element having side walls and a single serrated gripping surface extending transversely across the rear face of said element throughout substantially the entire distance between the side walls of said plate, the side walls of said element being pro vided with pivot openings at opposite sides of said gripping element, and pivot means extending through said openings whereby said element is pivotally associated with said front plate and with a link having means for the reception of a belt, whereby said gripping element has a mounting on said front plate so that the gripping surface cannot be carried past the dead center when a belt tongue is in position backwardly of the front plate.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising zt front plate having sidewalls, a gripping element having side Walls and a single serrated gripping surface extending transversely across the rear face of said element through substantially the entire distance lbetween the `side Walls 'of said plate, a pivot pin for 4said gripping element mounted in the side Walls of said plate and element, and a link having means for the recep* tion of a belt pivotally connected to said gripping element, said gripping element having zr mounting on said front plate so that the gripping Surface cannot be carried past the dead Center when a belt tongue is in position backwardly of the front plate,
said pivot pin having projections formed thereon between the side Walls of said gripping element and said side Walls of said gripping element.
3. In zt device of thechztraeter described, A
a gripping element comprising side members, and a single serrated gripping member connecting said side members, cachot' said side members being provided with pivot openingsv at opposite sides of said gripping member. Y
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 8th day of October, A. D.7 1920.
