Description

1. M. BARBERA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
A'PPLICATIQN FILED JUNE 5.1920.
1,394,881. Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
rms-- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application led June 5, 1920. Serial No. 386,749.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JosE MARTINEZ BARBERA, subject of the King of Spain, and resident of the city of New York in the county of lxings and State of New Yz'ork, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
T his. invention relates to advertising devices. (lne object thereof is to provide a device of this type for displaying continuous or progressive advertising matter and which may be applied to chair arms, seats and the like for an occupant to operate and view the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide an advertising device of the type described which is well adapted to hold the observers interest.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be neat and compact in construction, easy to assemble and disassemble and simple and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects of this invention will be in part obvious, and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an arm chair provided with an embodiment of this invention Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of an advertising device embodying the invention showing the interior mechanism;
Fig. 3 is a detailed cross-sectional view cut along line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view cut along line 4-4 of F ig.,2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the advertising device embodying the invention there shown is seen to comprise an outer box or casing 10 which may be secured in any suitable manner to the arm of a chair or the like support where the occupant or observer may conveniently operate the device and view the advertising matter. The top of this casing 10 comprises a frame 11 having a display opening in which is held a panel 12 of transparent material such as glass wherethrough the advertising matter is displayed, Secured on the interior of this caslng 10-1s another casing 13 in which is housed the mechanism for moving a continuous tape across the glass panel, as will hereinafter appear. The device is adapted for passing before the observers eye a continuous moving display of advertising matter which he reads as it crosses the field of the display panel. To this end a plurality of idlers or rollers 14 are journaled in the sides 15, 16 of the inner casing as at 17, and the advertising matter is printed or in any other manner borne on a continuous tape 18 which is moved continuously over the rollers by any suitable mechanism. Thus, in the form shown in the drawing, the tape is provided at its edges with small openings or eyelets 19 for the teeth of the two pairs of sprocket wheels 20, 20 and 21, 21 located preferably in the upper corners of the casing 13. These sprocket wheels are mounted on shafts 20a, 20h, journaled in the sides 15, 16 of the casing 13. To maintain the tape flat as it passes by the display panel 12, a horizontal support 22 in the form of a partition held as on cleats 23 in the casing 13 is provided adjacent the panel and spaced therefrom so as to permit the tape to pass thereover and be supported thereby. A guide roll 24 may be provided Ifor guiding the tape from. the sprockets 2l, 21 to a pair of sprockets 25, 25 mounted on a shaft 26 j ournaled in the lower portion of the casing, and similarly the guide 27 may be provided for guiding the tape from said sprockets 25, 25 on to the rolls 28, 29 and thence to the rollers 14. To keep the tape taut the lower sprocket shaft 26 may be made adjustable horizontally in any suitable manner. Thus, slots 30 may be provided in the casing 13, 13 and the sprocket shaft 26 journaled in blocks 31, 31 movable in said slots. The blocks may be secured in any suitable manner. Thus the outer casing 10 may have slots 32, 32 formed therein registering with the slots 30, 30 and the blocks 31, 31 formed at each end with threaded extensions projecting through said slots 32, 32 and provided with nuts 33, 33 adapted to be screwed down against washers 34, 34 as will be readily understood.
The device is adapted to be operated by the occupant of the chair and for this purpose the sprocket shaft 20 is provided with an extension which projects through the outer casing and carries a knurled thumb piece 36. ln order to prevent the tape from slipping back in a reverse direction a ratchet wheel 37 is provided, and a pawl 3S therefor adapted to engage the ratchet thus prevent ing the sprocket shaft from reversing.
n order to facilitate the assembly and positioning of the rollers and idlers, one ot the sides such as 15 of the interior ot the casing is split as at 39 thus providing upper and lower halves l0, al1 respectively. 1n positioning the rollers and sprocket shafts those of the upper portion of the compartment 13 are irst positioned in their bearings in the sides 16 of the casing and then the upper haltl ll() inserted in position so as to complete the support ot the upper rollers. The rollers and shafts of the lower portion of the compartment may then be placed in position in the sides 16 and then the lower halt l1 fitted in place.
rl`he advertising device above described may find application in restaurants, railroad stations, passenger cars, steamers, etc., and is particularly advantageous and effective in passing before the observers eye a continuous Yadvertisement which is more adapted to hold his interest than fixed advertising display matter, inasmuch as it arouses his curiosity as to what will follow in succession across the display panel.
illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination with the arm of a chair or the like support, a casing adapted to be secured to said arm having a display opening in the top face thereot', another casing mounted on the interior of said first mentioned casing. guide rollers journaled in the sides of said inner casing, sprocket wheels, a tape bearing advertising matter having openings adapted to engage with said sprocket wheels, said inner casing having one of said sides split. as and for the purpose described and specified.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State ot New York, this first day of June, A. D. 1920. l
