To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that we, ABRAHAM TAMARIN, FRANK TAMARIN, and MAX `HENDLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to adjustable bedsteads, and it comprises a bed having a head board and a foot'board connected by side rails, the head board and foot board each being provided with a pair of end rails and a transverse member arranged above the end rails, said transverse member comprising a pair of sections, a sleeve surround- V.ing said sections and connecting them to each other and means for retaining the ends of said sections within said sleeve, and said end rails each comprising a pair of sections adapted to be secured to the head board and foot board respectively, a locking member hinged to one section adjacent yits inner end, the other section being provided with an elongated slot, the inner end of said second section being adapted to be received fwithin said locking member and a bolt or pin carried by said locking member and received in said slot.
In the present invention, we have provided a bedstead which may be adjusted lat elally to vary the width ofthe bed. The bedstead is particularly suited for use in connection with the adjustable bed spring described and claimed in our copendinv application Serial No. 448,773, filed lVarch 1, 1921.
The bedstead comprises a foot board and a head board, each of which is provided with a pair of legs arranged at the four corners of the bed, the legs at the heador the foot of the bed being connected at their upper ends by means of a transverse member. Suitable means are provided for adjusting the length of the transverse member when the bed is to be adjusted.
Below the transverse member, the legs are connected by means of an end rail arranged in the same horizontal plane as the side rails of the bed. The end rail is preferably formed of channel shaped metal or other material, and made in two sections, the outer end of each section being secured to the bed post. Adjacent the inner end of one of the sections, a locking member is arranged, the locking member comprising a channel shaped piece of metal adapted to surround the inner ends of the two sections to maintain them in proper position. This member is hinged to one of the sections and is provided with an opening for the reception of a bolt which passes through the elongated slot in the other section to retain the end rail in adjusted position.

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral l designates the head board, and 2 the foot board of the bed. The head board and foot board are connected means of side rails 3, in the usual manner. As shown, the side rails are formed of angle iron and are provided with an arcuate plate 4 at each end. This plate is provided with a slot 5 adapted to receive a headed pin 6, carried by the bed post 7. It will be apparent that the side rails may be readily removed when the bed is to be taken down by lifting them to remove the pin 6 from the slot 5.
The construction of the head board and lfootfboard is the same, and a description of one will, therefore, suflice. As stated, they are each provided with a pair of posts or legs 7, arranged at the corners of the bed and connected at their upper ends by means of transverse members 8. The transverse members consist of a pair of sections, each of which is secured to and forms a continuation of a bed post. In the drawings, the transverse members have been shown of circular cross-section but any style or shape may be employed instead. The inner ends of the transverse members are surrounded by a sleeve 9, the sleeve being provided with an opening adjacent each end. The transbed posts in any suitable manner.
verse members are provided with a plurality of threaded openings 10, for the reception of a bolt or screw 11, adapted to pass through the opening in the sleeve.- It will be apparent that when the screw 11 is l passed through the sleeve into one of the openings 10, the transverse sections 8 will be secured to each other, through the medium of the sleeve, and the bed retained as adjusted, By arranging the screw in different threaded openings, the width of the bed maybe readily adjusted.
The bed posts are further connected by means of end rails 12, the ends rails being preferably arranged in the Same horizontal plane with the side rails and secured to the In the drawings, the end rails are shown rigidly attached to the posts, but they may be secured thereto by means of any suitable detachable fastening elements.
Each of the end rails comprises a pair of sections 13 and 14, preferably channel shaped in cross-section. A locking member 15 is hinged to one of the sections adjacent its inner end. As shown, the locking member is hinged to the section 14, as at 16. Adjacent the free end of the locking member, an opening is provided for the passage of a bolt 17. This `bolt is adapted to pass' through an elongated slot in the other section 13, and to be retained in adjusted position by means of a nut 19. Wfhen in locked position, the locking member surrounds or embraces the free vend of the slotted section and rigidly secures it to the other section of the end rail, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
It will be noted from an inspection of F ig. 1V of the' drawings, that the locking member isv arranged to swing in a horizontal plane and is best arranged to swing outwardly from the bed to permit free operation thereof. The locking device is permanently secured to one section of the end rail by means of the hinge 16, and is unlikely to become lost or misplaced when the bed is taken down. a
