Description

E. CALVERT.
BUILDING BLOCK AND WALL.
APPLICATION man APR.12,1919.
1,394,406. Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
PATENT OFFICE.
ELNATHAN CALVERT, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
BUILDING-BLOCK AND WALL.
Application filed April 12, 1919.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELNATHAN CALVERT,
a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Des Moines, Polk county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Building-Block and Wall, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a structural element, and a wall containing the same, composed primarily of concrete, presenting characteristics of advantage and improvement.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of an element, hereinafter termed a block, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a portion of a wall, constructed of the blocks like 1, and embodying further features of my invention.
The wall block, as shown preferably is made of concrete by tamping or pouring in a mold, not shown. The wall block as shown preferably comprises a body 12, having a ace l2 substantially plane, top and bottom surfaces 12 also substantially plane and forming right angles with the face 12 end surfaces 12 also substantially plane, except for indentations 18 adapted to be used as hand-holds, and forming right angles with the face 12 and the surfaces 12 and an inclined surface 12, lying in the same plane, opposed to the face 12 and forming other than right angles with the surfaces 12 The block also is formed with two cavities 14 opening through the surface 12 and tapering in depth whereby webs 15, 16 and ribs 17 18,. 19, in any desired thickness, may be produced. The blocks may be laid up in a wall as shown, in two rows and any number of courses, one row of blocks in each course being inverted relative to the opposing row of blocks, thus making provision for contracting the thickness of the completed wall, for plumbing and making flush all Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921. Serial No. 289,646.
parts of the outer faces of a completed wall, for placing the cavities 14 in one row opposite similar cavities in the opposing row and forming a hollow wall and for overlapping the wider face of the blocks in one row upon the wider face of the blocks of the opposing row in respect of the width of the wall. These are elements of advantage and improvement particularly as applied to a partition wall adapted to be covered on both faces, such as with plaster, where the matter of ventilation is not important and where wall ties may be omitted without risk.
I claim as my invention 1. A wall formed of hollow blocks, each block being made of concrete and formed with an outer face and side surfaces at right angles to said outer face and an inclined inner face lying in a single plane and forming oblique angles with the side surfaces and a cavity opening to the inclined inner face, said blocks being inverted in adjacent vertical rows to bring a wider side surface of one block into overlapping relation with the wider side surface of an adjacent block in another row and course.
2. A wall formed of hollow blocks, each block being made of concrete and formed with an outer face and side surfaces at right angles to said outer face and an inclined inner face lying in a single plane and forming oblique angles with the side surfaces and a cavity opening to the inclined inner face, said blocks being laid in parallel vertical rows and courses, the blocks in one vertical row having their inclined inner faces opposed to the inclined inner faces of the blocks of the other vertical row, the blocks being inverted in adjacent vertical rows to bring a wider side surface of one block into overlapping relation with the wider side surface of an adjacent block in another row and another course.
Signed at Des Moines, in the county of Folk and State of Iowa, this 5th day of April, 1919.
