To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residin at Fort Lee, in the county of Bergen and tate of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Paint-Pot Hangers, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to a device for supporting paint pots or other similar articles upon ladders for convenient use when the user is upon the ladder. Heretofore, for similar purposes hooks of various forms have been employed so that one end of the hook was passed over a rung of the ladder and the other end adapted to support. the paint pot or other similar receptacle or device. In the use of these hooks, as will be readily understood, the attachment, while secure, was bound to support the paint pot in a position in which it was diflicult to reach, and furthermore more or less difficulty has been experienced in shifting the position of paint pots and similar receptacles when so supported. The object of the present invention is to overcome these difficulties, and in so doing to provide a device for supporting paint pots and similar articles from either upright member of a ladder so that the same may be readily shifted without entirely removing the device from the ladder upright when the user either ascends or descends the ladder. Still furthermore, as made in accordance with my present invention, the support device also includes a member for engaging and maintaining in position a paint brush in the paint pot, whereas heretofore no provision for the support of the paint brush has been provided and it has been customary to permit the paint brush when not in use to rest in position in the paint pot itself.

The device made in accordance with my present invention will be hereinafter more particularly described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring particularly to the drawing the device made in accordance with this invention preferably comprises a body member or bar 10 having an enlarged portion 11 at one end and at the opposite sides of which there are teeth indicated at 12 and 13 respectlvely adapted to engage one side of an uprlght of a ladder when the hanger is 1I1 p0S1tlO11 for use as is plainly indicated in Fig. 3. At the opposite end the body member or bar 10 is provided with a head 14 adacent which in the edges her there are oppositely disposed notches 15 and 16 adapted to receive the hail of a paint pot or similar receptacle.

Associated with the body or bar member 10, and preferably pivoted thereto, I employ a U-shaped strap or yoke member 17 adapted to fit around one edge of an upright of a ladder. As clearly shown in the drawing, the free end of this U-shaped strap memher is provided with a tooth 18 and the 0pposite end is offset as indicated at 19 and plvota lly connected to the body member 10 as indicated at 20 so that the U-shaped strap may be turned from the position as indicated in Fig. 2 to that indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 for use.

Also connected to the body member or bar 10 I prefer to employ a snap hook 21 which may be connected to the body member by a screw 22 or otherwise. This, in the use of the device, is adapted to receive the handle 23 of a brush 24 so as to support the brush in a substantially central position relatively to the paint pot when the brush is not in use. This is indicated in Fig. 1, wherein the bail of the paint pot is indicated at 25 and the paint pot at 26.

When the paint pot hanger is not in use the U-shaped strap 17 may be turned to the position as shown in Fig. 2 so that the device is adapted to be thrown into the painters kit and to take up a minimum amount of space therein. Whereas, in use, the U-shaped strap is turned to the position shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, wherein this spans one side of the upright 27 of a ladder and the tooth 18 engages the inner portion of the upright, whereas the tooth 12 or the tooth 13, clepending upon which side of the ladder the device is employed, engages the opposite side of the ladder to support the paint pot 26. As will now be apparent, the device may be used on both sides of the ladder, being made reversible for this purpose, and also that the same may be readily slipped up and down on the ladder upright irrespective of on which side of the ladder the deof the body mem vice is employed, and also that a brush which is not in use may be supported in the clip 21 as shown in Fig. 1.

From the drawing it will be noted that the spring clip member 21 may be so placed as to cause the side of the strap or yoke member to engage therewith when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 in order to maintain these parts in this position when not in use.

I claim as my invention:

1.- In an article of the class described, a body member having an extended head at one end thereof in the extremities of which there are teeth adapted to engage the Outer portion of the upright of a ladder, and a U- shaped strap pivotally connected in a central position in the head of the body member and extending laterally therefrom so as to span the upright of the ladder and en gage the same in a position oppositely disposed to that engaged by the said teeth on the head of the body member.

2. In an article of the class described, a body member having at one end a head extending from both sides thereof and terminating in teeth adapted to engage the side of the upright of a ladder, and a U-shaped strap pivotally connected in a centrally disposed position to this end of the body member and extending laterally therefrom so as to span the upright of a ladder and to engage the inner surface of the upright of the ladder in a position oppositely disposed to that engaged by the teeth on the end of the body member, the said body member being thus reversible for attachment to either upright of a ladder and also being provided with recesses to retain the bail of a device su ported therefrom.
