JEAN MAXIMILIAN SCI-IORPP,
OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
ORNAMENTAL ROPE COVERING FOR FURNITURE AN D OTHER ARTICL-S.
Application filed April 16,
To ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN M. Sorronrr, citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Rope Covering for Furniture and Other Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to the covering of furniture, vases, doors, walls, lamps, burial caskets and various other articles with rope, for the purpose of ornamentation, and giving the articles to which the rope covering is applied an attractive appearance and surface.
The object of the invention is to cover the article withtwisted rope, producing ornamental designs, with the rope, and protective and ornamental edges, whereby the rope surface. will have an ornate appearance, and such covering being capable of treatment with a compound, for preserving the rope against the action of linseed oil and white lead, rot or paint, and also protecting the rope from injury by lire, heat, sunlight and the like.
Another object is the provision of such covering including ornamental decorations made of the rope.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bench having the rope covering thereon.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a pedestal and a vase thereon, each covered with the rope in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the loop chain formed of the rope at the edge or corner of the object.
In Fig. 1, there is illustrated a bench or stand having the rope covering thereon. The rope may be of hemp, jute, cotton, manila, sisal or other similar materials of vegetable or other animal fiber twisted in the usual fashion, and the rope is passed around or across the eXposed surface of the object, as at 6, with the pieces or lengths parallel and disposed side by side in contact with one another, thereby presenting a rough surface composed of the ridges of twisted Specification-oi Letters Patent.

rope, giving such surface an attractive appearance. Z'The rope is secured to the object by means of nails, tacks, glue, stitching or the like according' to the object, and along the edges and corners of the object, the rope is formed with outstanding loop chains 7 for ornamental appearance and to also serve as additional protection and reinforcement at such edges and corners. The covering is further ornamented by open crochet work 8, exposing through the openings thereof the surface of the object or article covered, and the covering is further decorated by decorations 9 of rope embroidery work. The top of the bench or stand shown has a panel 10 bordered by a loop chain 11 of rope, and the panel contains an embroidered rope decoration 12. `Said panel is first covered with corduroy, pique, whipcord, denim, or any other woven fabric over which embroidery work is fastened. The embroidered and crochet work may be of various designs, such crochet work being disposed preferably between the portions 6 and the embroidery work being make on the covering portions 6 at the desired points, and various designs can be worked into the covering and made exclusively of rope.
The rope covering is treated with a preparation for preserving it, so that it can be painted, without rotting by the action of linseed oil, white lead, or other ingredients of paint. The preservative also renders the covering damage proof against the elements of fire, heat, sun light, and the like.
In Fig. 2, the covering is applied to a vase 18 and a pedestal 1&1, which have the covering portions 6 of rope, the same as the bench shown in Fig. 1, with loop chains 7 at the edges, corners and other points desired. The vase 13 also has a band of crochet work 8 around the neck. Fig. 3, shows the loop chain 7 at the corner or edge of the object 15.
The rope covering, with woven fabric of all descriptions as a base for panels and eX- posed surfaces under crochet and embroidery work, can also be applied to various other objects of furniture, doors, walls, and articles of various descriptions, which may be of metal, glass, wood or other materials to which the rope can be secured in any suitable manner. Y
Havingv thus described the invention,v what is claimed as new is l. The combination With an object, of an ornamental rope covering secured on the eX- posed surfaces thereof, said covering including outstanding` loop chains along the edges or corners of the object.
2. The'combinaton with an object7 of an ornamental rope coveringsecured on the eX- posed surfaces thereof, said covering including open crochet Work Within the outline of and exposing such Surfaces.
3. The combination With an object, of an ornamental rope coveringsecured on the eX- posed surfaces thereof, and rope embroidery Werk on said covering` Within the outline of such surfaces.
4L. The combination with an object, of an ornamental rope covering secured on the exposed surfaces thereof including close parallel lengths on Said surfaces, ornamental rop-e Work design Within the Voutline of said surfaces:7 and Woven fabric under the rope Work design.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiX my signature.
