Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 18, 1921.
i Application filed November 26, 1919. Serial No. 340,909.
To 'all 001mm t may concern.'
Be 1t lrnovvn that l, Fanonnrei; l. CAN
NON, a citizen ot the VUnited `States, resid` ing at Bedt'ord, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain .new and use'lul lmprovenients in Rooi.-r
(oatino' A? ilicators voit' which the .tollo\ving is a specification.
yters being` employed to This invention relates to a machine that is used for the application ot liquid coating, more particularly the application ot liquid cement coating to roots.
(lement is applied to roofs in a. more or less thick liquid state. and hardens or sets after it has been applied. lt has been the common practice, heretofore, to spread the material over the root with large brushes manually operated.
l The object ot the present invention is to provide amachine o't, simple and durable construction, for conveying, depositing, and uniformly spreading the liquid cement on the roof. f
lVith `this object in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and ar 'angement ot parts as hereinafter described and pointed out definitely in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which are made part oiz the specification, similar reference characdesignate correspending parts.
In said drawings Figure 1 represents an elevation of' the improved machine, a portion of the reservoir being broken away.
F ig. 2 is a top plan View of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a top plan olf the base member detached.
Fig. l is a section on line lf-4 of Fig. 3, showing the door member closed, and Fig. 5 is a similar section showing the door open.
Fig. 6 is an elevation taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. 4
Fig. 7 is an under side plan View of the machine.
In the present embodiment of the invention l represents the shell ot a tank or reservoir adapted to contain the cement in a liquid condition. Said reservoir is open at the top and is mounted on a carrier base 2. said base member forming the `bottom of the reservoir, an annular flange 2a being provided for attachment of the shell 1.
The reason for designating the member 2 as a carrier member is, that a traction Wheel ries two bevel gears 15 and 1G.
3 and supporting legs il are connected there with and provide the means tor ca rying the load.
The traction Wheel 3 is keyed or otherwise made fast` on a shaft G, which is mounted in a bracket extending forward from the member 2, and the legs 4 extend from the member 2 diametri'cally opposite, and at yright angles to the wheel 3, saidflegs being provided with roof bearing elements or runner slices e",'preterably made of leather, adapted to slide on the root.
The shell 1 is surmounted by, and cir cum'terentiully embraced by an annular casting 8 provided with a cross-bar Sa, and a vertical shaft 9, centrally located in the reservoir, is journaled in said cross-bar and in the base member 2. The shaft 9 carries a series ot agitator' members 10 and is driven by the action ot the traction Wheel through intervening mechanism, described as tolloxvs: rhe shaft G carries a sprocket Wheel 3', preferably cast integral with the traction wheel 3, and a. sprocket chain 11 coacts With said Wheel 3a and a similar Wheel 12 carried by a shaft 13. The shaft 13 is mounted in a bracket 3b that extends trom the member S. A horizontal shaftl 14e is mounted in suitable bearings la, and car- 'lfhe gear 15 is in meshk with a gear 17 carried by the shaft 13, and the gear 16 is in mesh with a gear l'which is keyed or otherwise made fast on the vertical shaft 9. lt will readily be seen, that the rotation of the agitator' members l() Will coincide with the revolution or' the traction Wheel 3, through the coactionl of the mechanism just abovev de-L scribed. Y
Apertures 2b are provided in the bottom or base member 2 tor the discharge or the material, the discharge being controlled by a closure member or door 19 Which in the present embodiment is operated in the tollowing described manner. A bar 2O is slidably mounted in horizontal bearings 21, and toggle connection is made between said bar and the door 19, said connection comprising arms` 22 which are integral with or rigidly attached to the door 19 and are adapted to extend through the discharge apertures 2", said arms being pivotally connected `With linlrs 22a which are in turn piyota-lly connected with the bar 20 at 20a. The door 19 is hinged to the member 2 on the interior,
i the apertures 2b.`
`ivith and back of the apertures' 2b.
as shown at 19, and when the bar 2O is forced in, being manipulated by the handle 20h, the door is raised, oscillating Von the hinge pintleslQl, through the 'action ofthe toggle constructed as described. N hen the bar is drawn in the reverse direction, the coaction of the toggle closes the door over IA spreader is provided, comprising a rotary brush 23 mounted in suitable bearings on the under side ofthe member2, parallel As shown in the drawings the spreader is driven from the shaft 6 through the medium of a sprocket chain 2st coacting with a sprocket Wheel 25 carried by said shaft,V and a sprocket Wheel 26 on the brush shaft. I anticipate, however; dispensing` with the brush driving mechanism, as a rotary movementy Will be impartedto the brush by Contact.
A propelling member 27 1s connected with the reservoir at 27, said member being off- V set, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the operator in manipulating thelmachine, travels on the surface of the roof lwhich has not vbeen coated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages imof the invention will be readily apparent, and While l have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the appliance which is a practical embodiment thereof, l desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired Vas are Within the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. f
That I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. nfa machine of the character set forth, the combination of a. reservoir provided with a discharge aperture inthe bottomthereof; a closure member for said aperture; means for operating said closure member for covering and uncovering the aperture; a traction Wheel, fixed supporting members conneet-ed with said reservoir, extending laterally therefrom and provided with runner shoes; agitators operative in said'reservoir;
means for driving the agitators, said means being operated bythe action of the traction Wheel; and a spreader mounted on the under side of the reservoir.
2. In a machine of the character set forth,
vthe combination of a reservoir provided ivitha discharge aperture; a base member on which said reservoir is carried; atrae tion Wheel mounted in said base member foi-Ward of the reservoir; supporting traction legs provided with roof bearing shoes; extending laterallyfrom said base; means for manually propelling 'the machine; a hingedclosure member for said discharge apertures provided in the base member; means for operating said closure member; agitators operative in the reservoir; means for driving the agitators, said means being operated by the traction Wheel; and a spreader mounted on the under side of the reservoir.
3. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a reservoir provided with a discharge aperture in the bottom thereof;
a closure member for said aperture; means for operating said closure member Vfor covering and uncovering the aperture; a trac-V tion Wheel mounted in a bracket which is connected with and forward ofn the reservoir; agitators operative in said reservoir; gear and sprocket mechanism connecting the agita-tors with the traction Wheel,.for driving said agitators; and a rotary spreader mounted on the under side of the reservoir. 4c. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of Va reservoir provided with a discharge aperture in the bottom thereof; a door for said aperture; means for opening and closing said door; a traction Wheel mounted `in a bracket forward of the reservoir; traction legs provided with traction bearing elements; extending latterly from the reservoir; a vertical shaft centrally mounted in the reservoii';agitators carried by said shaft; means for driving the shaft, said means being operated by the action vof the traction Wheel throughthe medium of coacting gears and sprocket mechanism; a rotary brush mounted on the under side of the reservoir; parallel with the discharge aperture; and means for rotating saidV brush. l Y Y In testimony whereof .I aiiix mysigiiature.
