To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, WALTER J. PrA'rr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city'of San Leandro, county of Alameda, State of California, have made a new and useful invention-to wit, Improvements in Rotary Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be. a full, clear, concise, and exact. l-.;scription of the same.
The object of this improvement is to maintain a snug running fit between rotor and stator in rotary pumps, engines, and compressors of the vane type, by providing means for taking up wear on the inner eriphery of the stator, caused by the abrasive action of the vanes on the stator or by the abrasive action of sand, gravel, slimes, or other substances contained in fluid mixtures of any kind, passing through the pump.
in this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims :t'ollowing the description it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodiedf In the accompanying one sheet of drawings- Figure 1 represents a vertical cross section through a rotary pump of the vane type showing my improvement applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an end section of Fig. 1 on the line ll -lll.
My invention refers to that class of rotary pumps, engines, and compressors hav ing'a substantially cylindrical stator or casing and an eccentrically mounted rotor therein having radially extending vanes or blades slidably guided therein, moving into and from frictional contact with the inner periphery of the stator.
Referring to Fig. 1 the invention consists of the inclosing stator or casing 1, preferably cylindrical in cross section, mounted upon the supporting base 2 and havmg the inlet and discharge ports 3 and i integrally formed thereon at substantially right angles to each other.- Contiguou to the discharge port 4.- the casingor stator 1 is provided with the peripheral enlargement to prevent squeezing the liquid. he annular rotor 5 is eccentrically located within the cylin drical stator 1 on the shaft 6 that is sup ported in the bearings formed in the side plates 7 and 8 on opposite sides of the stator. The axis of eccentricity of the rotor is such that its outer periphery approximates contact with the inner periphery of the stator 1, contiguous to the discharge port 4.
The rotor 5 is slotted and provided with the vanes 9 slidably mounted therein and having the projections 10 engaging the cam slot 11 formed in the opposite side plates 7 and 8 concentrically with the cylindrical stator and eccentrically to the rotor axis. The cam slot 11 controls the radial movement of the vanes 9 into and from frictional contact with the inner periphery of the stator.
Adjacent the point of approximate sealing contact of rotor and stator, the stator casing 1 is enlarged at 12 to provide for the take-up or replacement block 13. This block is made of metal, wood, or any suitable material and is formed to the particular shape best suited for the conditions under which it operates. As shown in Fig. 1 the block 13 has the-surfaced edges 14 and 15 slidably engaging the side walls of the recess 12. The inner face 16 of the block 13' is formed on a radius substantially the same as the outer periphery of the rotor to snugly engage therewith. Within the recess 12 the block 13 is provided with the projection 1'? and is engaged by the reduced end 18 of the adjusting screw 19, swiveled in the projection 17, and threaded in "the stator wall. The screw 19 is provided with the squared end 20 shaped flanged, for wrench engagement, and is locked with a jam nut 21.
The replacement block 13 serves to prevent back pressure between the discharge and intake ports at and 3 besides providing a simple and efficient means by which an approximate sealing contact can always be maintained between the rotor 5 and the stator.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A rotary pump comprising in combination, a cylindrical casing having an inlet port and an outlet port, a rotor mounted within the casing eccentrically thereto, said rotor carrying a plurality of radially disposed. vanes adapted for outward and'inward movement, means whereby the outer ends of the vanes will be retained in con tinuous engagement with the inner periphroe ery of the casing, a block carried in a pocket formed in the side wall of the casing at a point intermediate the outlet and inlet ports, said block having an inner end surface complemental to the periphery of the rotor and substantially flush with the inner periphery of the casing whereby a continuous seal may be maintained between the inlet and outlet ports of the casing, a set screw threaded through the outer end wall of the pocket, and a swiveled connection between the set screw and the block.
2. A rotary pump comprising in combination a cylindrical casing having an inlet port and an outlet port, a rotor mounted within the casing eccentrically thereto,- said rotor carrying a plurality of radially disposed vanes adapted for outward and inward movement, means whereby the outer ends of the ends of the vanes will be retained in continuous engagement with the inner periphery of the casing, a block carried in a pocket formed in the side wall of the casing at a point intermediate the inlet and outlet ports, said block having an inner end surface complemental to the eriphery of the rotor and substantially ush with the inner periphery of the casing whereby a continuous seal may be maintained between the inlet and outlet ports of the casing, a projection formed on the inner end of the block, a set screw threaded through the outer end of the pocket, a swiveied connection between said set screw and said projection on the block, and means for locking the set screw in its adjusted position.
