This invention relates to typewriting and computing machines, and particularly to those in which a master-wheel is employed.
The invention is herein disclosed as applied to the well-known Underwood addendagraph, in which a key-driven masterwheel is mounted upon the stationary framework, while the computing wheels travel.
The typewriter'carriage is returned auomatically when the last digit of a number is computed or when the line is completed;
and it hasbeen the practice when employing carriage-returning mechanism for the operative to actuate the final ty e-key with unusual speed, and then to wait until the carriage returns.
This mode of operation is a burden upon the operative. In casehe. fails to be alert, the masmr-Wheel may happen to be in an abnormal position (due to 21v numeral key being partially depressed'while the carriage is returning), so that a collision may occur between the teeth of the com uting wheels and the teeth of the master-w eel. One ob: ject of the invention is to avoid this (iiiiig culty. To this end, the carriage is prevented. from returning during the actuation of the computing mechanism by connecting the numeral keys with the carriage-returning mechanism in such a manner that after typing the final digit the started carriage-returning mechanism will be held in abeyance until the end of the UP-St-IOkB of the numeral key.
It has been customary for the operative to watch the returning carriage so as not to depress a tabulator-key until the can riage has finished returning. This is necessary in order to avoid a collision between the tabulating stops and the column dogs.
To avoid this burden upon' the operative, I provide a. member which prevents the depression of any decimal-tabulator-key when the carriage is retr hing.
It is customary to arrange the wheels in denominational groups, each group separated from the next b one letter-space. so that a punctuation math maybe typed upon the work-sheet between the groups. 'When a. punctuation space 1s at the computing point the niaster-wheel is not in mesh'with any computing wheel.
It may happen. that the operative will inadvertently depress a numeral key when a punctuation space is at thecomputing point, thereby causing a digit to be typed. upon the work-sheet without any computation taking place, and other errors may follow.
I have provided. improved mechanism for lockingthe numeral keys when a punctuation s iace is at the computing point, and for controlling said lock directly from the a talizer. It will not be necessary for-the op erative to make separate readjustments of the locking devices whenever a ",totalizer 1 shifted along the carriage.
The totahzer has cams arranged in con formity with the punctuation spaces between dial wheels, so that said cams will be ef" fective to actuate the numeral-key-locking mechanism whenever a punctuation space is at the computing point.

It will be noted that with this construction, the switch 108 may easily be removed from the machine for repairs or replacement and may easily be returned tothemachine without in any way affecting the adjust mcnts' of the carriage-lemming mechanism. The switch may be loosened from its choragc, by removing the thumb screws 120, (Fig. 1) and lifting it off the plunger 112 which holds the contacts apart, and may eas y be replaced by guiding said plunger through the aperture in the base 113 of the switch when replacing the switch.
