SAFETY-HOLDER FOR MILK-BOTTLES AND THE LIKE.
Speciiicaton of Letters patent.
Patented (let. 4t, 19251.
Application filed February 11, 1919. Serial No. 276,409.
To all w wm t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN I-I'.` WILHELM, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Holders for Milk-Bottles and the like, of whichthe following is a specilica-V tion.
This invention relates to a safety holder for milk bottles and the like, and it is particularly adapted to be arranged eXteriorly of a house so that the milkman, on his rounds, may readily insert a milk bottle so that the same vwill be retained and guarded until removed by authorized hands.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and eilicient device for this purpose.
A further object is toso arrange the parts of the device that they may be carried bf dierent relatively movable portions of the house structure, for instance, one part by a door and another part by the door frame, to the end that the act of opening the door will automatically so disassociate the parts of Jthe device that the bottle may be readily removed.
A further object is to so arrange the men,
tioned parts of the device that they may, if preferred, be readily attached to awindow and window frame, so thatthe lifting of the window will give'access to the bottle.
A further object is to so fashion thel device that it constitutes a guard, or cover for the bottle into'which the bottle may be introduced from beneath, to provide means to hold the bottle suspended, and to provide means whereby snow, ice, or the like, which Vmay have fallen on the device, is automatically removed by the opening of the door or window, thus giving free access for the ready removal of Jthe bottle.
A further object isto so fashion the device that it .may be readily made from simpleY castings which may be easily and'inexpensively held assembled.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements ot parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are tobe taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention:
Figure l is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with this invention7 parts being broken away and illustrated in section substantially upon the plane of line I of Fig. 2, a milk bottle being shown suspended within the holder, and
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. l, portions being broken away and illustrated in horizontal section subtantially upon the plane or line II' of Ieferring to the drawings for describing in detail the structure which is illustrated therein, the reference character L indicates what may be readily referred to as the body member of the holder, while the reference character G indicates the top, or cover member.
rllhe milk bottle is indicated by the reference character H.
The body member L is cylindrical and is of an inside diameter just suiciently great to accommodate the widest part of the milk bottle. This diameter is maintained as a minimum at all points throughout the length of the body for the reason that'in removing the bottle the same must be lifted up through the body and out of the upper end.Y Any suitable means may be provided for attaching the body to the door, or window frame A but preferably one or more lugs, as 1- are cast integral with a portion of the body and are adapted to be comiected to the door, or window frame as by screws or the like, as 2.
The reference character 3 indicates locking pawls, of which there may be any num- Vber, Vadapted for supporting the bottle within the body. In the drawings two of these pawls are present, being arranged at diametrically opposite sides of the body and having enlarged concaved heads l at their upper ends. These pawls are pivotally mounted upon pivot pins 5 carried by the body member, and shoulders 6, formed upon the body, serve to limit the downward swinging of the pawls. The heads t are adapted to engage beneath the bead 7 formed at the uper end of the bottle, and to straddle the bottle neck so that some portion Orp-said heads will at'all times stand to engage the bottle neck, although the bottle may be inserted with the neck nearer to one side of the body than to the other. The shape of the heads is such as to automatically center the bottle as soon as the milkmans hand is removed.
The inclined position assumed by the pawls while engaging the bead 7 insures the centering action referred to and at the same time insures a tight grip of the pawls beneath the bead.
The body L is formed with suitable pockets 8 into which the pawls 3 may move, when the bottle is being lifted out of the body,V said pockets being enlarged at their upper ends, as at 9, to accommodate the heads 4 of the pawls.
The outer walls, as 10, of the pockets are, of course, disposed-soas to limit outwar movement of the pawls at a point where the preponderance of weight of the pawls is at the inner side of the vertical plane of the pivots 5, thus to insure gravity movement of the pawls to their inner, or lower positions, at alltimes.
For convenience and economy in manufacture, the body member is preferably made up as two separate castings, indicated generally by th-e reference numerals 11 and 12, each forming approximately one-half of the body. rlfhese are substantially identical, except that the member 11 is formed with the attaching lugs 1, and except that one of the members is formed with protruding lugs 13 which are adapted toengage within sockets 14C formed upon the other member. lThe lugs and sockets 13-14 are arranged two at the top and two at the joints 12 engage each other.
Where the two members 11 and By this disposition,
lat four uniformly spaced points, they serve effectually to guide the two members 11 and 12 into proper register. The two rivets which form the pivots 5 serve to hold the two parts firmly together with all of the lugs 13 engaging within their sockets 14.
In this way the simple operation of fixing the rivets 5 in place serves the double purpose of providing pivotal mountings for the pawls 3 and of locking the two parts of the body memberl rigidly together, thus considerably reducing the work and expense of assembling. Y
If desired, the sockets 14 may be continued for the entire circumference of the body member, and in'this way provide ornamental beads 15 exteriorly at the top and bottom portions of the body member. i The cover member G consists of a disk formed with a bracket part 16 bv which it may be fixed to the door, or window N, through the use of screws, or the like, 17. rIhe diameter and the position of the cover is such that the cover will entirely cover the open upper end of the body when the door N is closed.
vat the bottom of the body, and,
In use, the two parts of the device are connected to the door frame, or window frame, as has been above set forth. The pawls 3 will hang down so that they rest upon the shoulders 6. When a bottle is to be inserted in the device, it is introduced at the lower end and it is moved upwardly-so that it lifts the pawls. The upward movement is preferably continued until the top end of the bottle strikes against the lower surfaceof the cover G, thus carrying the bead 7 well above the heads of the pawls. The bottle is then allowed to move downwardly until the pawls engage beneath the bead 7. Thereafter, it will be impossible to remove the bottle through the lower end of the body. At
the proper time, however, when the door N has been opened andthe cover G thereby removed, the bottle may be' readily lifted up through the open upper end of the body allowing the pawls 3 to fall again to their originalV position preparatory for further use. Y
It is to be noted that if desired one of the plane of the main part of the cover G, renders them quite inaccessible when the cover is over the body, since the body at that time stands directlyin front of the screws so that it is impossible to reach the screws with a screw driver kor like .impl-ement.
It is further pointed out that the'upper surface of the cover G may be utilized as a bracket,or support, upon which asecond milk bottle, or other article, might be placed.
This is particularly .useful in setting out.`
empty milk bottles to be collected bythe milkman, and in order that the cover G might be used to the greatest advantage for this purpose, the cover might be attached to the door, or window frame, instead of to the door or window, and the body part be attached tothe door or window, or to the door or window frame. By this arrangement all of theV advantages above pointed out will be present, and at the same time the cover G will be stationary so that it may be better adapted to support an article upon its upper surface. Vlt is intended, therefore, that wherever, in this paper, the cover G Vis mentioned as being removable, that said statement shall be construed to mean that it is movable relative to the bodyV by actual movement either of the cover or of the body, as may be preferred.
As many changes could bemade in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A safety holder for milk bottles and the like, comprising a body part and a cover part, the cover part serving to prevent ac cess for the removal of a bottle from the body part when the cover `part is in covering position, and said two parts being disconnected and adapted to be attached to relatively movable parts of a house structure substantially as described.
2. A safety holder for milk bottles and the like, comprising a plurality of separately formed cylindrical segments arranged to complete a hollow cylindrical body member adapted to receive a bottle therein, said segments having mating coniigurations thereon at their abutting edges, retaining means to hold said segments assembled, and bottle retaining pawls loosely pivotally supported upon saidretaining means for the purpose set forth.
3. A safety holder for milk bottles and the like comprising a tubular body member and a removable cover member for one end of the body member, the body member being open at both its ends and being adapted to receive a portion of a milk bottle therein, said body and cover members being disconnected and adapted to be attached to relatively movable parts of a house structure whereby the movement of one of said house parts will uncover one end of the body member to facilitate the removal of the bottle from the body member through said uncovered end, and means to retain the bottle within said body member in a position for removal only through said uncovered end of the body member.
4. A safety holder for milk bottles and the like comprising a body part and a cover part, the cover part serving to prevent access for the removal of a bottle from the body part when the cover part is in covering position, said two parts being disconnected and relatively movable to give access for the removal of the bottle, and means whereby said two parts are adapted to be connected to relatively movable parts of a house structure so that the movement of said parts of the house structure will move the COVQI sition.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
